I recently sent a complaint to SMS regarding to the handling in Shift 2.
So tell me guys what u think?
Here it goes:
Hello.
My name is Xxxx Xxxxxxxx.
I am one of the early eager race fans that got the hold of shift 2 here in Finland.
After 6 days and 40% percent completion of the games career mode, I have to say I am really disappointed.
I have played iRacing, Rfactor and nearly everyone of Simbins race titles such as GT Legends, Race and GTR 1,2 and Evo.
And if I am correct U the praised Slightly Mad Studios are the bunch of lads behind those GTR related titles.
So fair and square you supposed to know what realism is. But the amount of "realism" in Shift 2 strictly limits to the atmosphere and sounds in the game and the damage modelling wich is spectacular.
The steering is rather arcadish and too lagy for a simulator or even a racing game.
As I´ve measured via equipment and software in the PC version of the game the amount of steering input given in any controller there is a 400-800 millisecond lag before the input registers to the car in the screen after the player steers the car. This phenomenon leads to rubbery kind of control even for the highly fine tuned cars the FIA calls GT1.
It feels exactly like putting a car on top of a rubber mattress and steering it in snow.
In my opinion theres something wrong when a Maserati MC12 GT1 slides out of a corner in full down force and over 150 miles/hour in a downhill turn.
The MC 12 is a really well balanced car that handles great. So great that it was not allowed to Le mans. No matter what the ACO tells about its width.
You can see it for your selves how it handles here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8CNtWOH1Fo
This is in my view unacceptable for a racing "simulator". GT1 cars don´t slide in corners. They are so aero affected that they barely generate any sliding even if the tires are worn.
Oversteer because an error of a driver is one thing. But ridiculous amount of oversteer in every corner is another.
And before you say that I haven´t bothered yet to try all the controls you are wrong. After 8 hours of testing in the PS3 version with an DS3 there was only a slight improvement on the "driving feel" after adjusting the settings.
I always drive in the elite handling mode and only with the ABS brake aid.
After endless disappointments I switched to the PC version this time with a wheel.
I found out that the controls where a mockery and a slur to my Logitech wheel.
This is where I measured the input lags of the controller with help from my fellow racing mate.
That lad is also a part time racing driver in our very little own GT series here in Finland.
He drives a few years old 911 GT3 RSR. A car connected to the "K-Rauta" decals on one of the GT3 porches in the game because those decals where once on that very car.
This is of course a car that I also have driven and I sincerely can say it handles very differently in the game than its real counterpart cousin.
And it really is a shame that someone who were part of creating real racing simulators don´t know any better.
I mean come on.
I don´t mind EA trying to fishing money out from our customers hands but seriously you got to sort the handling out.
It´s killing a game that is in every other part great. The atmosphere is so deep and intimidating in a good way it´s really a shame that it is ruined by such primitive physics.
I mean CAD data or not GT2 Porsche´s don´t slide in corners.
And it is related to every car in the game even the Seat Cupra.
I think that your really advanced physics that are really expensive and related to manufacturers CAD data are torn down because of the game engine or other related problems in the controls.
And It annoys me to think that it has been present since NFS PRO STREET and you have yet to fix it.
I don´t know that is it something that you did not know how to fix or just that EA wanted to please the arcade community. Either way you should give up and fix the floating feel of the steering every time one chooses to turn the steering wheel.
And it doesen´t end to the steering. The game is also buggy as hell. Recently I tried the Spa enduro of 20 laps and I struggled to get even to the first half of the race only to discover that my hard earned lead was ruined by an invisible wall in middle of the road in the Courbe Paul Frère corner or turn 16. And there is also a bug at the start when the AI drivers suddenly deside to jump start the race. The bug list goes on forever.
I really wish at the bottom of my heart that u answer to this email and seriously try to fix these issues regarding to the "realism" in Shift 2.
Because the way you and EA market the game as the most realistic racer ever here: http://www.metacafe.com/watch/5801207/shift_2_unleashed_realistic_trailer/ (only place where I can still find that trailer) the American way would be of course sue you and EA for a marketing fraud.
Still hope that you take this mail seriously and answer to give some kind of an explanation to this clearly unfinished product.
Excuse my spelling. I have yet to master the English language.
Sincerely yours Xxxx Xxxxxxxx
