The complaint I sent to Slightly Mad Studios...

I recently sent a complaint to SMS regarding to the handling in Shift 2.
So tell me guys what u think?

Here it goes:

Hello.

My name is Xxxx Xxxxxxxx.
I am one of the early eager race fans that got the hold of shift 2 here in Finland.
After 6 days and 40% percent completion of the games career mode, I have to say I am really disappointed.
I have played iRacing, Rfactor and nearly everyone of Simbins race titles such as GT Legends, Race and GTR 1,2 and Evo.
And if I am correct U the praised Slightly Mad Studios are the bunch of lads behind those GTR related titles.

So fair and square you supposed to know what realism is. But the amount of "realism" in Shift 2 strictly limits to the atmosphere and sounds in the game and the damage modelling wich is spectacular.
The steering is rather arcadish and too lagy for a simulator or even a racing game.
As I´ve measured via equipment and software in the PC version of the game the amount of steering input given in any controller there is a 400-800 millisecond lag before the input registers to the car in the screen after the player steers the car. This phenomenon leads to rubbery kind of control even for the highly fine tuned cars the FIA calls GT1.
It feels exactly like putting a car on top of a rubber mattress and steering it in snow.
In my opinion theres something wrong when a Maserati MC12 GT1 slides out of a corner in full down force and over 150 miles/hour in a downhill turn.
The MC 12 is a really well balanced car that handles great. So great that it was not allowed to Le mans. No matter what the ACO tells about its width.
You can see it for your selves how it handles here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8CNtWOH1Fo

This is in my view unacceptable for a racing "simulator". GT1 cars don´t slide in corners. They are so aero affected that they barely generate any sliding even if the tires are worn.
Oversteer because an error of a driver is one thing. But ridiculous amount of oversteer in every corner is another.
And before you say that I haven´t bothered yet to try all the controls you are wrong. After 8 hours of testing in the PS3 version with an DS3 there was only a slight improvement on the "driving feel" after adjusting the settings.
I always drive in the elite handling mode and only with the ABS brake aid.
After endless disappointments I switched to the PC version this time with a wheel.
I found out that the controls where a mockery and a slur to my Logitech wheel.
This is where I measured the input lags of the controller with help from my fellow racing mate.

That lad is also a part time racing driver in our very little own GT series here in Finland.
He drives a few years old 911 GT3 RSR. A car connected to the "K-Rauta" decals on one of the GT3 porches in the game because those decals where once on that very car.
This is of course a car that I also have driven and I sincerely can say it handles very differently in the game than its real counterpart cousin.
And it really is a shame that someone who were part of creating real racing simulators don´t know any better.
I mean come on.
I don´t mind EA trying to fishing money out from our customers hands but seriously you got to sort the handling out.
It´s killing a game that is in every other part great. The atmosphere is so deep and intimidating in a good way it´s really a shame that it is ruined by such primitive physics.
I mean CAD data or not GT2 Porsche´s don´t slide in corners.
And it is related to every car in the game even the Seat Cupra.
I think that your really advanced physics that are really expensive and related to manufacturers CAD data are torn down because of the game engine or other related problems in the controls.
And It annoys me to think that it has been present since NFS PRO STREET and you have yet to fix it.
I don´t know that is it something that you did not know how to fix or just that EA wanted to please the arcade community. Either way you should give up and fix the floating feel of the steering every time one chooses to turn the steering wheel.

And it doesen´t end to the steering. The game is also buggy as hell. Recently I tried the Spa enduro of 20 laps and I struggled to get even to the first half of the race only to discover that my hard earned lead was ruined by an invisible wall in middle of the road in the Courbe Paul Frère corner or turn 16. And there is also a bug at the start when the AI drivers suddenly deside to jump start the race. The bug list goes on forever.

I really wish at the bottom of my heart that u answer to this email and seriously try to fix these issues regarding to the "realism" in Shift 2.
Because the way you and EA market the game as the most realistic racer ever here: http://www.metacafe.com/watch/5801207/shift_2_unleashed_realistic_trailer/ (only place where I can still find that trailer) the American way would be of course sue you and EA for a marketing fraud.

Still hope that you take this mail seriously and answer to give some kind of an explanation to this clearly unfinished product.
Excuse my spelling. I have yet to master the English language.
Sincerely yours Xxxx Xxxxxxxx

i give it 👍👍

Hopefully with enough of these kinds of emails sent to them, the bugs and the handling(#1 on my list) gets fixed.

The game has only been out since the 29th here in the states so maybe they are already working on a fix.*crosses fingers*

No I didnt mean that. (?)
Does the mail get that impression?
I meant to say that they have done titles such as Shift 1,2 GT Legends, GTR 1,2, and maybe evo...

"And It annoys me to think that it has been present since NFS PRO STREET and you have yet to fix it."

For every 1 person that seems to complain like you, there are 10 others or slo that believe SMS has done a pretty good job. Did you send an email to PD a week after Nov 24,2010. They deserved one. They still deserve one and its been nearly 6 months later. Out the box, Shift 2 is alot better game overall than what GT5 is still til this date. Take away the physics and the premiums cars of GT5 and its doesn't even make it out of production status. Another 3 years needed for a game that will need to have been in production for almost a whole decade.

Why do people like yourself even bother to purchase a game just to bash it. I am sure you all watch the videos and look at articles before the game releases, yet you all still buy it and post things such as this. So pointless if you ask me.

Very good email, make sure you send it from your race team's domain/email too and possibly get the governing body and fellow drivers to send their complaints too, Johnny Milner is being absolutely slaughtered by jokes in the paddock about his involvement in the game. In regards to the K-Rauta car...let's just say someone on that forum worked on it so make sure you're taking care of that car :sly:

Slightly Mad done NFS PRO STREET?? Are you sure buddy?

So let me get this straight, you troll on the serious posts as well? ...good lord you're quite some character!

He didn't buy it just to bash it he clearly states that he bought because he genuinly thought it would be a simulator just like I did, he's actually someone who races a car that i've worked on in the past and that car just so happens to be in this game, so think twice because you even dare to troll on here because you attacking the judgements of two people who know how some of the cars in the game should handle along with the DBR9 GT1(or 'GTS' as it was known back then), Heizemens Corvette (back when it was owned by Alphand Adventures) and the Sumo Power GT1. Your arguement is shot to pieces by two people in the know, two people that are clearly involved in motorsport yet you guys seem to think you know more about realism then we do? You're quite simply the stereotypical buggy git who doesn't leave the drivers alone in the paddock.

And I'm sure the ratio of GT5 happy to unhappy players is not that much different from SHIFT (which may not be 10:1 as you've proposed). And because of that I'm sure PD or Kaz himself (via tweeter) have received similar complaints.

What you need to do is remove your own prejudices in regards to both these games which apparently is not as easy as it may sound. As there are people like you who enjoys the game from a gamer's POV- good gameplay, AI etc, there are those like me who play these less for their gameplay than the driving physics. For example my time in all racing/driving sim is spent with one car on a track where most of my enjoyment is derived from being able to feel the car, its behaviour etc. Lucky me, I bought the first SHIFT. If I had the money I might buy the second SHIFT but it's quite low on my list of priority (it sits somewhere between getting high and a steak dinner).

+1 the prejudice even blinds them when two people in the know tell them about a games short comings

Johhny Milner? Who's that? ;)

Anyway, I'm just curious, what game is the most realistic according to the "people in the know"? I'm just curious because I'd love to try a game that gives the best representation of the real thing physics wise, while also having great graphics, sound, and track selection. I'm not "trolling", just genuinely interested in what you guys think because you have the experience of being behind a wheel of a real race car, which I lack. 👍

Timmy* lol, I believe he's with the Bavarians these days! :P

I think our friend from Finland got it spot on, rFactor and the stuff by SimBin is what you're after, not too sure about iracing mainly because i've never used it or heard any or the drivers talking about it, but if you're gaming is on console only you're more or less in the wilderness of mediocrity, Shift 2 is plainly aweful and with GT and Forza it's really down too what you're a bigger fanboy of judging by the sheer NONSENSE people talk in comparisons of the two, personally I think all 3 of the console games (Shift, GT, Forza) are diobolical, GT and Forza would have been miles ahead of the other two if it didn't disregard aerodynamics and tyre behavior/contact patch (what happens when you have an engine that merely guesses via calculations how the car should work).

From my understanding they put an autocorrection system into the steering that makes it easier to drift. Well, its supposed to make it easier to drift. I think that is what's giving the game its yaw sway. Some are saying a patch is in the works. I hope so.

Over half of the Indy drivers are on on iRacing along with several NASCAR drivers including Dale Jr.. I am sure that several Grand AM drivers are too. Many drivers use it to get track time. There is a youtube video of on racer talking about using iRacing the day before to practice and then winning the race. They broadcast their races like real events, have sanctioned, yes, SANCTIONED divisions under Grand Am and NASCAR. You go to their homepages, like Grand Am and they have Rolex Standings, Continental Standings and iRacing Standings. They give series winners $10,000 and a race car for top prize.

I hope so, i am not playing this game till then.

Good well, written email, it expresses everything i feel about this game.

I think I'm one of the only people that wasn't expecting a simulation....I was just like, "cool, looks like another badazz Need for Speed game...".

Yeah, and it would of been fantastic if i was able to drive them, like in previous NFS games, it would be even better if it wasn't a sim.

How on earth is that trolling? SMS had nothing to do with NFS Pro Street so why would they or have yet to fix it?

Yeah, and it would of have been fantastic if i was able to drive them, like in previous NFS games

But for some reason it seems that on this subforum alone dozens of people are perfectly able to drive the cars in this game so it must be user error.

Also: fixed your post for you. 👍

Well written and accurate. However, I believe they will just toss it in the bin with the rest of the complaints. Thanks for the efort anyway.

I find that unlikely. I work somewhere that I expect to be a similar size compared to SMS, and someone reads every single complaint/compliment that comes through the door. The particularly good/bad ones get sent to everyone else in the company.

How are people saying this is well written? It may be accurate, but the wealth of spelling and grammatical errors would make me loath to read through the whole thing if I were working at SMS and looking for feedback. If a poster cannot be bothered to take the time to put his post through a spellchecker, it doesn't bode well for how much time he took to form the opinions expressed in that post, native English speaker or not.

Good on you for trying, but I doubt you'll get much in the way of a response to a letter that appears to have been written by a child. Fix the errors and resend it, and you might be in with a shot. I'm not trying to be mean, I'm just trying to give your opinion the best chance of making it to the developers where your concerns might be heard.

I totally love the game but it does seem a little to floaty / spongy.

A test I sometimes do is just drive around at 60 mph and try different things to see how it handles.

I tried the lotus exige at spa and it was apparent that even at low speed weaving there is way too much float. (if it had been a real car I would have been straight round to the dealership to complain)

That said, i do actually love the feel of the handling as at speed it seems to give a really nice feeling of weight transfer. I did about 20 laps at spa in shift and then loaded up SimBin GTR2 and did 20 or so laps in that. I prefer the handling of gtr2 but shift had that certain something that just makes it a little bit more involved and fun.

The whole sense of immersion is amazing though and the sound of the engines puts GT5 to shame. GT5 cars seem to have engines that sound more vacum cleaners IMO.

Hopefully they will tweak the handling slightly in the first patch, if they didnt however I would still be more than satisfied with the game.

Sorry but that is just simply offensive and borders on racism.

Sorry but NASCAR is more oval racing, Endurance and Single Seater drivers don't really mix well with the oval racers too well and as for IndyCar and GrandAm I'll ask a few of the drivers when I get a chance, it seems that you're trying to aggressively sales pitch it to me. As I said before, I'll suspend my ultimate judgement on iRacing until I've actually used it, I have heard good things about it, but it isn't from any of the drivers I know in BTCC, ALMS, LMS/ILMC and FIA GT < where the REAL driving talent usually is. Interestingly Dale Jr was directly involved in GT5's farcical NASCAR attempt so anything video game related from him I'll take with a pinch of salt! LOL

Though you have some solid points dude i highly doubt that they will even take it into consideration, as someone posted earlier to everyone 1 guy that hates the game there are most likely 6 guys that love the game so they will need more than one person to complain at that level to make any dramatical changes or even take it into consideration. Good effort though seen as your not a native English speaker.

To be clear you need to test more....Each one of the handling modes are different...novice,normal,exp,pro and elite take your car out on normal mode with your same setup and watch and see your sliding go down...I could go on and on about tweaking the settings to change the handling...You need to test more...

The fix for the biggest issue in your letter (input lag) is in testing now according to Ian Bell
Quick post to say that we've removed the lag internally (well, down to hardware limits) and we're have a blast in testing with the wheels here. Some 'late in the day' asynchronous changes with a view to optimization put things out of kilter a touch. The changes mean that the input is now processed very early on in the frame and filtered through to the physics as quickly as possible.

Big thanks to gtplanet forums and members for the feedback. We do read as much as we can.

Sorry but that is just simply offensive and borders on racism.

I can see where it could be offensive (comparing the spelling and grammar to that of a child), but I fail to see where it's borderline racist. :odd:

Anyway, this sounds a lot like a complaint thread. We've had plenty already. Just saying.

This is great news! I was planning on putting my copy on eBay this morning, but maybe I'll hold on to it a little longer.
