The drag of assists

I was trying to do the GT-R Official Record Trophy and I wanted to be realistic so I chose assists that I thought would get me closer to what a real GT-R would be. I thought TCS 4 and ABS 3 should be close to reality. With this settings I managed a time of 7:29.6. I was close so I decided to keep on trying, but as I tried to push the car closer to the limit, I only made more mistakes, like getting the wheel on the grass and missing apexes, and couldn't get a clean fast lap. By the way, I use a G27.

Then I decided to try turning off TCS and putting ABS 1 as I'm used to and I could see imeadiately that I was quicker. The first lap I spun on Aremberg, but on the second lap I already managed to complete the lap on 7:28.4, even with a few mistakes.

So tell me your experiences with assists and how they affect your driving.

Ever since I started my GT series in GT3, I've always used the racing line, never once turned it off. I decided to turn it off while GT5 one day, and it was a whole new world. With the racing line I always felt so limited, braking even when I knew I didn't have to, and with it off, it felt like I could actually make my own decisions. I my lap times improved greatly, often knocking off maybe 10-20 seconds on some courses and it got a lot easier to drive the cars. Haven't looked back since.

With ALL Assists off I can decrease my lap times by as much as 15 seconds using a GT 40 LM Spec II at the American Indy. Of course with all Assists off the car while being faster is also more difficult to control and needs a fairly delicate and masterful touch. If you hit anything or any of the AI hit you it is more difficult to get the car back under control.

Tested this many times over with many cars . . .

They generally slow you down (except for abs 1), a low tcs level (1), on high power cars helps avoid excessive wheel spin. (I use a sixaxis.)

Seriously? Do you mean you use the sixaxis component for steering or just that you use a DualShock+SixAxis pad?

nope the sixaxis pad is the one that came before the DS3, it has no vibration.

i use a sixaxis, too. i alway have abs = 1 and on high power cars tcs = 1-3.

tcs slows down but it takes real practice to drive a high powered car without it.

i recently bought the L2 and R2 clips that give you better feeling for accelerating and breaking.

did a test run on laguna seca with the ford gt test car spec 2 (the premium one from gran turismo, fully tuned)
1:16 with tcs = 0 and clips; 1:21 with tcs = 3 and without clips

however if i just want an easy drive for some cash i go the easiest way and leave tsc = 3
with low powered cars or cars with a nice tune you can always leave it on 0 (example Golf RM, Lamborghini with RKM tune)

I also use the Sixaxis. Using it ALL my life really helps, I can compete with bad wheel users sometimes. Still, I need a wheel. But to me, I can't even purposefully spin the GTR, it just grips, and grips.

When I got the GT-R trophy, I set ABS at 1 and TCS at 2. Seemed easiest for me to drive the car with the G27. And, I got the trophy after just a few tries. But, that was a while back. If I were to do it again, I'd probably run it with TCS off.

I find all assists just slow me down, except ABS on 1 as I find the brakes in GT5 without it on far roo sensitive & unrealistic. I had trouble doing 1 licence test, the: Consecutive Corners On Snow one, and I hate snow driving so put ABS on 10 & Active Steering on Strong, then I done it on my 3rd attempt, I guess that's the exception to the rule. Apart from that one time I never use them, I have more fun with the all off.

I heard a rumour that having active steering on in certain cars in GT5 Prologue gave you about 2 seconds a lap, a trusted friend tested it out & confirmed it was true. I wonder if the same thing is true in GT5?

👍

I have a sixaxis pad that vibrates... is that a newer version? I only bought the PS3 for GT5, I've always been an XBoxer in this generation.

Do the clips actually really make a difference? They're a fairly cheap addition but I haven't heard from anyone that's used them yet...

EDIT: Noticed the top of my pad says DualShock3 SIXAXIS, therefore it's a DS3... I get it now :D

Read a recommendation that you should turn TCS off. Understood it, tried it loved it. Turned everything off and only use ABS 1. Have been better ever since.

I turn off ABS as well, in all cars under 500 pp, as ABS@0 actually makes the car accellerate the car faster, than leaving it at ABS@1. I know, boggles the mind, I hope PD addresses this, unless ABS values somehow correspond to internal stock LSD load settings, then it can be understandeable why the accel can be affected. I then set my brakes balance to 2 Front and 1 rear, as it provides ample braking power for most use.

gotta try that 0-2-1

Never use traction control.

The main component of slowing you down is the lack of heat in the tyres.

Rag it round the first few corners to get more heat into them, then you are up to speed quicker. Drive like a granny on pot and it will take too long.

I just tried driving without Driving Line for teh first time. -3 seconds on Nurb GP/F. Sure enough, I can drive it with my eyes closed, but it's a start =P

Well, I usually drive with assists only with cars over 1000 HP (and at ABS 1.)
No other assists, as it helps your times immensly.
