Some fine movies that haven't been mentioned yet (I think):

- Akira - The remastered DVD release is drop-dead gorgeous. Anyone who says they understand the last 20 minutes is lying.

- The Big Lebowski - A great comedy that gets better every time you watch it. John Goodman's finest over-acting.

- Being John Malkovich - OK, Cameron Diaz looks like she got beat with an ugly stick, but it's the most straight-up original movie in a looong time.

- Rushmore / Bottle Rocket - Two more excellent intelligent comedies, both made by the same guys. Funnier every time, and not a single fart-joke.

- Trainspotting - An instant classic, and just as good as the book. Great source of movie quotes...

Agree/Disagree?

I'll be honest, I haven't seen one of the movies you just mentioned crackhoor.....so I'll make a run to the movie shop, then tell ya what I think.

-Mafia
-Happy Gilmore
-Blade 2
-Fight Club
-Men In Black
-Gone In 60 Seconds

moulin rouge?!?!?! i'll give ya that the singing was good, the screenplay alright, and all in all a pretty good story line.......but a musical??!?!???!?
hey what ever though, if you liked it that much, props to ya

Cheers!

I normally hate musicals, and personally regard the greatest feat of endurance in my life as having sat through 27 minutes of The Sound of Music.

However, I thought that the script, score and production of Moulin Rouge was excellent. I loved the way it flowed, and carried me along, how the songs told the story, rather than needlessly extended it like in other movies. I liked the constant switching from one genre to another (like the Nirvana track!), and also the jumping around in the timeline, with the subtle narration. I thought that Ewan MacGregor and Nicole Kidman were fantastic in roles that were very different for them, and Jim Broadbent was excellent too. Just a great film, and it was really in my consciousness when I was making the list.

This sounds like a bit of a rant, and it probably is, I just wanted to explain why I liked it, even though infallible wasn't dissing me for liking it.

I agree with most of what I've seen here, but some that haven't gotten mentioned are:

Bullit (the greatest chase scene until Ronin came about)
Le Mans (probably the best racing movie of all time)
Grand Prix (just for seeing the old mid-1960's GP cars)

Okay, the acting is terrible in all of them, but the cars are something to watch even though these movies were made almost ten years before I was born.

Memento was the last good movie I've seen in a while.

Heat was a really good one, too.

2001: A Space Odessey is a classic, but most people hate it.

I'm not sure why, but Solar Crisis was probably the most interesting movie I've ever seen that nobody's heard of.

I think MazKid said Bullitt.
I'd like to see Le Mans. Recently watched footage of GT40s at Le Mans in 68 (the year before my father raced there), and it was crazy!
Heat was excellent, but I thought the ending was a bit weak.
2001 I didn't understand until I read the book!

Now that I think about it I really like Fallen, with Denzel Washington. I thought that movie had a superb ending.

Giles I couldn't agree with you more about the "how the songs told the story, rather than needlessly extended it like in other movies". What an amazing quote. I think that's the number one reason why I stray from musicals.

Interesting - weak in what way? After the discussion between De Niro and Pacino in the diner there was really no other way for the film to end

I'm a bit surprised I hadn't contributed to this. Personal faves:

- Heat
- The Usual Suspects
- Citizen Kane
- The Third Man
- Blade Runner
- Dead Man
- Until the End of the World
- Fargo

More as they come to mind

I can honestly I have never seen, nor expected to see, those films together in a single list of someone's favourite films...

Hey I have eclectic taste. :D

The list would have been longer, but I type slow and the message kept timming out.

I think I may have a favorite in every gaunera.

I forgot to add the Boondock Saints to that list.
