The getaway test

I had a interesting thought today and I decided to try a small "getaway" test in GT4. I was thinking something along the lines of the movie "The Transporter". I wanted to see how good a car would be for a quick getaway like in the first movie.

I decided to use the cars from the movie, well not exactly, but close enough anyway. In the first Transporter, he used a BMW 745i I think, and later on a Mercedes S600 or so. In the second Transporter movie, the main car is an Audi A8 W12 (some place I read said it was an S8, but I'm pretty sure there's no S8 based on the latest A8, and that it was an A8 W12 in the movie..). Anyway, the cars I chose to use were:

BMW M5 - 500HP V10, RWD
Mercedes E55 AMG - 470HP Supercharged V8, RWD
Audi RS6 - 450HP Twin-Turbo V8, 4WD

The track of choice was Citta Di Aria as it seemed similar to a european seaside resort like the one in the first Transporter movie.

Ok, so the test here is, to see how these cars handle in a "quick getaway" through the tight streets of a track like Citta Di Aria.

Note - I used arcade mode, time trial, no aids, S2 tyres (medium) and a Logitech DFP.

First up is the BMW M5. This car feels very quick through the tight corners. It also pushes hard out of the corners. I was also able to make it drift around a little bit coming out of the apex on some of the corners which was very pleasant. The V10 sounds very powerful, reminds me of a Formula 1 car for some reason. Anyway, on my flying lap with the M5 where I didn't do any mistakes (which was my 2nd lap), I pushed it really hard. I didn't touch the track walls even once, so I was quite happy with that lap. But I came really close to touching the wall in many cases, I was trying to push the car to the edge. Didn't write down the laptime, but it felt really quick that's for sure. In the replay, the M5 looked very beatiful in the black colour too!

Quickness - 9.5/10
Enjoyment - 9.0/10
Getaway Factor - 9.5/10

Next up is the Mercedes E55 AMG. First off, this car felt very sluggish compared to the M5. The gear shifts take longer, and it likes to drift around a bit more. The noise is more focused on the whistling supercharger as well, so it sounds quite different. Through the corners, exiting with a bit drifting felt pleasant, but the car didn't feel even close to having as enough power as the M5. It was decently fast through the corners, but it felt like a turtle where the full on throttle came in compared to the M5. Don't have the lap time here either, but it felt considerably slower than the M5.

Quickness - 6.0/10
Enjoyment - 7.5/10
Getaway Factor - 6.0/10

And now the Audi RS6. This car felt really sluggish. As I kept driving it, it got more enjoyable, but it still felt like a tank in the end. The 4WD system provided way too much understeer I think compared to the RWD of the previous two cars. The only thing I really found enjoyable about this car was the weight transfer "feeling" that the game provides, and the replay. In the replay, the car looked really gorgeous. Other than that, this car ain't too great. Way too sluggish, and even though once it gets into 2nd to 3rd it starts feeling fast, when you shift to 4th from 3rd at redline, you start at like 3500-4000rpm in 4th, and the car just chugs along. Not pleasant at all. This car is definetly not meant for performance driving and not suited for a getaway at all with its slow cornering speed due to understeer. Felt just a tad faster than E55 through the straights. The lap time was around 1:47.4 or so (mid 1:47).

Quickness - 7.0/10
Enjoyment - 4.0/10
Getaway Factor - 5.0/10

Ok so the winner here is the M5, it's the car best suited for a getaway of the 3. It's really good, but I still think it's not perfect. Maybe someday I'll find an even better car for a getaway factor.

Anyway, there's still a bit left of my writeup. As I said, I only have the laptime for the RS6, and it was around mid 1:47. Now I thought that still *pretty* quick, as I remembered the SL500 R230 I did like a 1:51 and with the SL55 AMG I did like a 1:47-1:48, not bad. I thought the RS6 wasn't that fast though, so I wondered if a regular S4 would be just as fast around the track.

So I jumped into the '03 S4 with 340HP V8 I believe. Did like 2 laps, first one I got a feel of the car, second one I did the flying lap, pushed it really hard. It did feel slower through the straights, taking longer to get to 3rd and 4th, but the car felt much better geared than the RS6, and not as sluggish. I figured a lower weight and "better" handling will equal it out to the 100+ HP RS6. I also figured I'd have higher cornering speeds since it's a "slower" car and that I'll have more control. The car was more enjoyable, and guess what, in the end, it actually proved faster than the RS6. Its laptime on the 2nd lap was a 1:46.6, so almost a second faster. Almost a second faster, that's very good I think, for a car with 100+ less power. So power isn't everything it seems after all. :dopey:

Very nice writeup, seems to be the same way that I would have chose them. I find that all of the audi cars seem to understeer in this game. The m5 is a beautifull and fun car to drive.

Maybe, but the Japanese companies are good as well :)
I like how the you two sorta switched roles:D

And I've only driven the Benz and the M5 in this game (I don't like VW/Audi so I don't drive if I don't have to:D) and i agree. Most of the Mercedes (excl. the DTMs) feel porky, the M5 has a great feel to it. One of the better cars in the game.

Nice write up.
