What can you do with the special paint and inverted decals? Show off your skill in this fortnight's theme - Masking Tape. Image and liveries by @Cytoria. - (click for full-size)

This Fortnight's Theme
In @Cytoria's own words - the livery editor has its limits, but with some finesse there are always solutions and workaround for most things. What can you do when you want a special color? You mask. Let's take a deeper look:

As we all know, and despite its refinement, the livery editor has some limits. One of these is that you can't select a special paint for a sticker. Since the release of the game, we developed techniques to override this. This week's theme will show your skills with a special paint and masks !

CARS:
Any
LIVERIES: A livery with a special colour base coat (see unique restrictions)
USER MADE DECALS: Allowed
LOCATIONS: Shiretoko for the main pics
1) Choose the Shiretoko scape (found by searching all locations and refining by 'Japan'and 'Snow'):

2) Apply the following settings:

Camera

Camera Settings

Aperture: F 2.8
Shutter Speed: 1/60 (as it's not a panning shot I don't know that this is important)
Focus: Single AF

Environment Settings
Aspect: 16:9
Orientation: Landscape
Resolution: High

Effects

Temperature: 9800 K
Colour Cast Correction: -0.060
Exposure correction: EV +2.0

3) Place your car in the middle of the scape at a suitable angle:

4) Zoom in to 102mm (certain cars may require more or less to fit in the viewfinder) and move the camera until you're happy that the car is centred in the shot:

View attachment 729372

5) Move the focus to the nearest corner of the car (I normally centre on the headlamp closest to the centre of the image) and take your shot.

6) For a shot of the rear, go back to the Car tab and hit R2, switch to Camera and refocus (again I use the tail lamp nearest the centre) and take the shot. If the car has moved off-centre then move the viewfinder and adjust the zoom as you see fit.

For new cars/liveries simply find the scape in your library and reopen and change the car, then rinse and repeat as above.

Images, GIFs, entry format and tutorial made by @BLiTZ
360° GIF: Optional
UNIQUE RESTRICTIONS:
1) The livery must use a special paint base coat from the Mileage Exchange. You have to specify which one you choose in your post. The most "special" it is, the better (It would be sad to use Rosso Corsa as a special base !).

2) The special colour must be a part of the livery. You can't just select a special base and put sponsors on it. You also can't cover the whole car except one or two inverted decals. I think we can fix a minimum of 60% of the special base covered by masking stickers.

3) You can do replica or fantasy liveries.

4) The two main pics will follow the rules of the previous week. If you wish you can add one more pic (overview) for the poll, and one pic of one particular detail of your masking in your post.

  • The only way you can take part is to be a member of the GTPlanet forums. If you haven't created your account yet, click here.
  • It is recommended you host your image either here on GTPlanet (via the Media section), or on Flickr.
  • Not sure how to submit your image? Here's a guide for both methods mentioned above.
  • Preview images must not exceed 640 pixels in either direction.
  • A preview image must be representative of the full-size image. Do not add effects to it.
  • Please use a clickable-preview to full-size, not a separate text link for it;
it makes poll creation much easier!
  • Mark your FINAL ENTRY clearly, with red text.
  • Unsure how to? Copy and paste the following:
Code:
[COLOR=red][B]FINAL ENTRY[/B][/COLOR]
  • You are required to use two ‘main’ photos, viewing the front and the back of the car. You can post two additional photos inside a spoiler.
  • No heavy post-game editing, slight enhancing is allowed.
  • One entry per user. It must be your own work, and never previously used in a comp.
  • Do not ask other users to choose your entry.
  • Absolutely no entries which utilize edited/hacked file saves.
  • You may change your entry once. Do it clearly; edit out your previous entry, and
either post the new one in a new reply, or in place of the original.
  • Do not post "Honourable Mentions" or outtakes - just your Final Entry, that's all.
  • Winner gets to choose the following Fortnight's theme.
  • Winners cannot enter in their own theme!
  • The Host may ask for the original image/livery and it must be submitted if so.
  • It's recommended to share the original livery online(in-game) to prove it’s your work.
  • Unique to this competition, you can also make a 360° GIF! It is not a requirement, but it is recommended.
    Go to giphy.com
and upload your clip (In GT Sport go to My Library > Car Livery > Press your livery and then hit Preview. Record a full 360° spin and then speed up the recording to 15 seconds in a video editing program on your PC/Phone/Tablet. See example in spoiler at the bottom of the post how it should look.

First of all, download and install Blender. I used 2.78 for this tutorial but the current one at this time, 2.79a, shouldn't be any different.

Open Blender up and you should see a screen like this (minus all the recent files because you haven't used it yet)
    lh8JMRS.png

Currently, it's in its Default mode, for 3D modelling. We'll need to change it to the Video Editing mode.
If you go up to the top where it says 'Default', click on the button outlined in red to choose the Screen layout...
    C9i4iSE.png

... and click on Video Editing...
    SsIOWSQ.png

... and you should now be greeted with something like this.
    XvXUZTe.png

First things first, go down to the bottom, where it says Add. Click on that and click on Movie.
    avmEeU6.png

Locate and select your recorded clip on your USB or wherever you've placed it. Click Add Movie Strip...
    OdcEdmv.png

... and you should now see, along the lower section of the screen called the Video Sequence Editor, two bars. The darkish blue coloured one is the video, the teal coloured on is the audio. Don't worry about the audio, we don't need to mess with it.

Press the Home button while your mouse cursor is in the Video Sequence Editor to see the whole sequence.

Next you'll need to change both of the values, outlined in red, to 450. The left value is the end limit of the number of frames your final video will have, and the right value is the cursor point (the green thing that says 15+00)
    72a9Hin.png

The reason why is because the 450th frame on this current project, running at roughly 30fps, would equate to 15 seconds.

Now to speed our clip up to fit those 15 seconds. Go into Add, the Effect Strip, then select Speed Control.
    AlbPSvh.png

Right-click on the pink Speed strip, then go over to the sidebar on the right. Scroll down until you see the tab named Effect Strip and Untick 'Stretch to input strip length'.
Now for a bit of Maths, you'll see in the image below that my Speed factor is 1.200...
    XZdQcVX.png

This is worked out by dividing the total number of frames of your clip, found on the end of your bar label (540 in my case)...
    Jqa9QJO.png

    by the total number of frames we need (450). 540 / 450 = 1.2 so I put 1.2.

Now the clip has been sped up, press Play on the bottom to check to see if your clip runs and loops properly in the top right. You might see a fps counter pop up and slow down as you play but don't worry about that.

Now to export the new clip, go to the top left screen part, click on the square box with an image inside and select Properties...
    SlDjmAI.png

... which will change that screen part to this.
    RC4JAfz.png

We need to set up the export options and encoding before we export. Scroll down until you see the Output tab and select MPEG, then the Encoding tab will pop up. Open the Encoding tab and make sure you have the Format as MPEG-4, the Codec as H.264 and the Audio as AAC.
    TOdl2DM.png

Right, scroll back up to the top and hit the Animation button, under Render...
    tZ8Lcpb.png

... and you should now see Blender playing through your video and rendering it.
    mRiucWd.png

Once it is done, open File Explorer, go into your C:\ drive and open up the 'tmp' folder, there you should see your new video. It'll probably be named '001-450.mp4' or something.
Drag that video into GIPHY, set the duration to 15 seconds and click through the rest and there you go.

Fortnight = 14 days, not the game.

Noob post from me...I didn't understand what I'm supposed to do this time :banghead: my experience with the livery editor isn't much, so I'm not familiar with the masking thing. :(

"inverted" decals, at least. Let's get @Cytoria in here to explain it further while I try to get the poll up STAT.

You take your car with some special color, for example chrome and make the livery around so it shows up some decals as they've been made in that special color. It can be inverted decals, as syntex mentioned, it can be some arty things, as stripes, flames, as long as it remains with the special color you chose as base color. ^^

Inverted decals are not mandatory at all, but they are a workaround some have developed here so they are allowed. For the 3 liveries in the main pic of OP, I didn't use any SVG for the masking part, only for the sponsors.

The goal of this theme is to be precise enough as you can't cover your special base if you overstep your guiding lines.

An interesting theme for this round. Let's hope an update doesn't nullify the need for this theme :scared::scared:

I read somewhere that they can't add special colours for decals because the special paints and effects are programmed in the lighting engine, whereas the stickers are more like a raster image put on the car as a texture. I'll see if I can find the source for that.

I think we are more likely to get "carbon" special base coat than special colours for decals

I wouldn't worry about that anytime soon. The bitmaps/decals appear to exist in a shell outside of the wireframe, the game can project this shell onto the surface of the mesh, but the additional rendering settings to achieve the special finishes can't be applied to the decals themselves, just the shell that they exist in - or of course to the base mesh itself. I think it would be a significant effort and drain for the game to have to worry about rendering any additional shells around the car (i.e. all decals with a certain desired finish would have to exist in their own shell. At the moment there's two... whatever's on the base mesh, and whatever the decal finish setting is set to... increase that by just one further option and you're potentially increasing the rendering load by 50%

Not saying it's impossible... and I don't have facts to back-up my statement above, but it seems logical, and anyone that's tried to get a specific effect while using Blender probably knows how much effort it can be.

Alright, I think I got it now, thanks! Gonna be tough to find a proper livery for this theme, but I'll give it a shot.

Plus, the deadline is on my birthday :P so I must get an entry for this!

Last for previous round, first for this one ^^

FINAL ENTRY

For this entry I choose my "end of the year" livery I've made on Swift. It is based on one pic from internet I found, which i really liked.

The base color is W1 Matte white and the decal is almost one piece glossy bodywork around it, so the decals reflect surroundings, while white keeps matte shade on it :D well, not sure how much time I'll have this round, but if I come up with something better, I do change the entry. ^^ as I'm a bit ashamed of all those jaggies on the decals ^^

Livery is here:
https://www.gran-turismo.com/cz/gts...lery/all/livery/2626863/1/4756395018019701248

Forzamotorsport don't have metallic decals after 10 years..... Not casually.
I'm not sure that Shiretoko are the best place to show the effects of special paints and colour, expecially chrome colours. I was not very happy with the pics of my Viper on the previous competition, the livery look less "3D"

That was quick ! W1 Matte White with glossy decals is the way I've made my VGT which gaves me the honor to be selected for the LEC#2 so I can't disagree with your choice. And this is obviously right in the theme.

I may whip out my 99% masked Spearmint Rhino Jag and edit it so more gold is visible, If that's allowed ;)

Lots of JPS liveries are made this way, so it can be allowed. But it looks like the gold special color is only used on your sponsors decals and is not really a part of the livery itself, so maybe try to use it more prominently. See Unique Restriction #2.

All I really need to do it remove some black decals and clean it up a little if that's the case, Shouldn't take long, Or I may just go for chrome or something, I intend to stand out the most this week :sly:

This livery just came up to my mind when I was replying to @Strax about what this round is for. ^^ Lucky coincidence for me this time :D

So, been a bit thick here, I choose a special paint as a base and then overlay a design which takes up no more than 60% of the car making use of the base colour behind the decals?

Thanks in advance

At least 60% of the car... but it is only a guideline, nobody will measure that. It's only a way to say that it must look like the special colour is a decal/a part of the livery, and not just a chrome car with sponsors on it. Check the three example linked in the end of the OP, that might gave you some ideas of what to do.

It also happens that by looking at your livery, I finally understood 100% what needs to be done this time haha :P so thanks, again! Need to find inspiration now...

Great theme! Not sure if I'm gonna have time for this one as I'm away on holiday soon, but I have been wanting to so some inverted decal liveries to make use of some of the metallic paint finishes.

The base color is (I think) W2 Aluminum Metallic. To keep the bare metal effect on the nose and under the stripes at the back I put the "main" color on a decal and left parts uncovered. You can do the same with decals where the main logo is transparent with a colorable "mask" around it. Does that help?

I have one done that is half special color and half not, tempting to enter it.. :dopey:

After playing some Project Cars 2 with my brother in-law yesterday, I found a livery I thought looked nice. So I made that. With a W1 Small Flakes as base.

FINAL ENTRY

Yes, I used all decals true to PC2, except for a few minor details.

Get it here.

EDIT: Added a bonus image.

Also, I see now some of my decals are slightly inaccurate; I will not fix this for the competition but I will fix it and upload it again at a later day. It's not like it shows anyway, you wouldn't notice unless I told you. :P

I've got as slight problem, I'm doing a gold base for my livery but when I go to take a picture under the setting guidelines the image loses its 'gold shine' and actually looks yellow which kinda ruins the look- see below;

You could do like Mires, tone down the effects a little and it should work still, as long as it’s the same scape it’s all good. :)
