Victor Wooten is also one of my favourite bass players, all around, doesn't have to be jazz. If you like his style check out Marcus Miller as well. In fact, there's a live song called 'MIller Time' with Wooten and Miller.

I saw him live when he was with Bela Fleck and the guy is a phenomenon (sp?).

I knew I'd heard his name somewhere.

That was very impressive. I found it interesting to see the drummer struggling to match Wooten's bass playing. I liked the little jam from around 1:50 towards the end, too. Thanks for that, Diego.

I've seen Bela Fleck & the Flecktones 3 times, and 2 of them I was sitting absolute front row, once in front of Futch and once in front of Vic.

It was crazy watching Vic take his solos: even close up, his right arm was a complete blur.

Been listening a lot to Prog lately, as well as Jazz Fusion. Lots of Continuo Renacer (Spanish band, highly recommended, if hard to find, though) and Coprofago (Chilean death metal/jazz band).

Mahavishnu Orchestra and Weather Report also have been high up on my playlist lately.

I think it's sad that jazz is so neglected on this forum. I am enjoying some Fats Waller, more specifically "Ain't misbehavin'"
And yes I know that this thread is over 5 years old.

Yeah, I agree on the neglecting... keep in mind 85% of the users in this forum are under 30 (rough estimate), and most of the jazz listeners I know (and I'd project that to a worldwide basis) are over that age.

I like Jazz and all, but finding a source of artists/groups and a place to listen is a bit of a challenge for me.

Jazz is my 2nd fav music genre. There's acouple live spots in Vegas I used to go to that had really good local bands.

Thumbs up for Sun Ra, Thelonious Monk, Dr. John

I recently got into an American jazz band called BADBADNOTGOOD. There's some obvious hip hop influences in their music which make a real interesting listen. You can download their album for free from the band's Tumblr. Apart from these guys, I don't really listen to jazz. I used to go out to see local jazz bands play fairly often a few years ago but it's been a while since I last saw any perform.

Used to go to concerts, but kind of lost the circuit.
Thought about looking for some concerts earlier this month.

Mainly like things like Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and John Coltrane, but can appreciate a lot of other things (Michel Petrucciani, Big Bands, ...) . Life jazz certainly can be inspiring.
Most people do not even know how much Jazz there is in current music, "Englishman in NY" Sting but with Branford Marsalis, Cantaloop of US3, etc...

I come here and have my mind blown. How come that, in three pages and withh several classic names mentioned, NOBODY has even remembered Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers?

WHAT ARE YOU PEOPLE?

er... trolls?

Possibly. Anyway, if none of you have never heard the Jazz Messengers, get on it. They are one of the most influential ensembles of the early years, often crediter for the "redefinition of cool".

You can also listen to the latest album by Stacy Dillard, guy plays the sax pretty damn wellm and it's straight-up jazz, no fussion stuff if that sort of thing turns you down.

I'll be back with more of course.

I like Billy Cohan and Pat Metheny:tup:.

My favourite Jazz album:

Pat Metheny - Letter from Home

Used to hear this in the morning when i wake up:)

WARNING: If youre on a melancolic day dont listen to this song:P

(fixed) :)

Here I am... 💡

If you can't feel this, you have no soul. Brad Mehldau = mind blown. That is utterly genius improvisation.

Also, Cap'n Jack, that is improvisation, but not jazz I'm afraid. Hate to be a jazz snob, but "It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing...". Electric keyboard + solos does not necessarily = jazz.

Great thread!

I don't really have too much knowledge on jazz, (mainly listen to hip hop)... but i do like it, i think i'm gonna have to look up some of these names i'm reading about.

Anyway, it's not my intention to water down or tarnish this great thread, but just thought i'd post a couple of tunes that i like.

1st one is by J Rawls (hip hop DJ/producer/artist) featuring Charlie Cooper:
http://youtu.be/8c_G-u0lbMg

2nd one... don't know whether you guys would consider it to be jazz, as it's more of an orchestra thing.... basically the piece is based off a hip hop tune by Slum Villiage... of which there was a member who was a famous hip hop producer, J Dilla, unfortunately J Dilla is no longer with us (died of TTP in 2006, R.I.P), but basically the tune is dedicated to the late JD and his family,
I tend to find the hairs standing up on the back of my neck and getting real hype to this tune.... (yes weird, i know)

Miguel Atwood Ferguson and 40 piece orchestra (Suite For Ma Dukes) (Hoc-N-Pucky) :

PS.. AOS, that tune you posted is Great!, it reminds me of the music in Cowboy Bebop... is it the same band/group?

I love Jazz. I'm not very knowledgeable, so I can't contribute much. I do enjoy this piece, though. I hope you guys do too. I have several albums by him, love the classical-jazz crossover.

My dad loved Jazz and that's why I'm into this genre. Electro, House and stuff took me now but nothing, nothing can beat Jazz.

Here's some songs from some of my Papa's albums.

Al Jarreau - Spain

Matt Bianco - Half a Minute

Bob and Hillary James - Just Like My Lover

(apparently they were from 1 single compilation, lol)
