This is nothing new, but I had never given it a go until this past weekend. Creating a private race online, choosing the cars I want in the race with 11 AI drivers, in a 25 lap ALMS style multi class race around Sebring was a freaking blast. It was intense to say the least and a great challenge.

I chose to drive the #92 Rahal Letterman Racing M3 GT2, against a field of 6 other GT cars, and 5 LMP1 cars. The racing was solid, and keeping an eye out for those faster LMP cars created a new sense of anxiety as the laps passed. And its a bonus knowing that you still gain money and XP by doing this.

I wish I had done this sooner, I've been keeping busy with rivals mode and the event list, but something in me was really missing endurance racing. Since I barely race online, I just never got around to trying this out, and I'm glad I finally did. I'm sure a full grid of 16 would be better, I wonder why you can't have more than 11 AI. Either way, great fun, and I plan on creating my own little ALMS series for fun with timed races instead of # of laps.

It certainly is a lot of fun, I've been doing this from the start making races and trying to get a good challenge from the AI, have you put damage on simulation? It makes the racing much harder as when you're overtaking you don't want to damage your car, the only problem I have is the AI brakes far too early so it's too easy to overtake and pull away from the pack.

Awesome! I love doing this also and along with Simulation Damage I use cockpit view and it is a blast. Like 2121 said the AI does brake early, other than that it is an entertaining experience.

Yes I aim for simulation everything when I play. I also generally use a lesser PI car as well to make it more of a challenge. Its an intense moment when I would check the rear view and see an LMP zooming up behind me into a breaking zone leading into a corner, and I try to execute a turn while also trying to pick a line that will not interfere with his.

I only wish this would have been integrated into the single player mode somehow. On a few occasions I would forget that this is an online event even though I was playing by myself, so I would pause and realize, oh crap I cant pause! LOL

I would love to do this but to be honest, the A.I really isn't fast enough for me.

I tried something similar in the Le Man hopper class race (the 2.4hours thingy) and I was battling the R1 cars in the R3 car

Kinda makes it all pointless.

Yep...other racing games have only had the same functionality for, oh, decades. Grid customization is a bit harder to find elsewhere, but it shouldn't be.

I regularly do races like this. Biggest problem is you can't pause half way through a 90 min race to put the kettle on :(

LOL, yes I found myself in the grass by doing this accidentally a few times.

It would be cool to be able to choose AI drivers as well, or their skill level. Imagine driving against all Rossi type drivers.

For those that want a bit more of a challenge try these settings..
This won't work for multi-class races because of the bucket scoring*

Rules
Game Type #Circuit Race
Max AI Players #11
AI Difficulty #Professional

Advanced Rules
Grid Order #Random or any Points option
Number of player buckets #2
Score Buckets independently #No
Group by Bucket #No

Group 1 Options
Body Family #GT1**

Group 2 Options
Body Family #Must be the same as Group 1
Power Handicap # -10%**

Then don't forget to change yourself into Group 2, by selecting your gamertag in the lobby and using the option.

*It will work, but you'll need a 3rd bucket for the higher or lower class of car and if you finish behind cars in that class that will be your overall finish position, you can make up for the loss in prize money by doing more laps :P
** User preference

If you do want to add LMP cars etc..

Advanced Rules
Grid Order #Random or any Points option
Number of player buckets #3
Score Buckets independently #No
Group by Bucket #Yes

Group 3 Options
Roll off Delay #10s**
Body Family #Prototype 1**

Then remember to change some AI to Group 3 and yourself to Group2 when back at the lobby.

Good luck. On a track like Lemans you'll really need to make those corners count with this setup. I say you should try this with sim damage off for the first time. And don't forget you can save the race setup from the rules menu ready to load without having to remember this all.

Sounds cool, will give it a go sometime. BTW, don't laugh, but what the hell is a player bucket? Is that a car class group?

Essentially.

I came up with a potentially fun (or frustrating) game. I call it 'Slippery Slope.'

Bucket 1:
Toyota Yaris-Stock
-75% power
-75% grip front
-75% grip rear

Bucket 2:
Hummer H1 Alpha-Stock
-75% grip front
-75% grip rear

Each team will consist of a Yaris driver and a Hummer driver. The goal is to push the Yaris all the way to the finish line (it won't even make it up the first hill by itself, I tried for 5 minutes) with the Hummer. With only 25% normal traction, it feels fairly similar to driving uphill on ice....difficult. The Hummer takes about 12 minutes to complete the 'New Hill Climb' by itself. Only bucket 1 will have the ability to end the race, so the first Yaris to the top starts the end-race timer. Again, the Yaris (with these settings) is flat-out incapable of doing this alone.

Obviously this doesn't work with AI, so if a few of you guys wanna try it, let me know.

Anyone know how the Reward credits are handed out? I tried to make a race with 3 buckets, a R1 with 5 AI cars, S with just me, and an E with 6 AI, but I didn't get anything for it I assume because it was just 1 car. Thinking that way, I assumed that the more cars you're directly competing with, the reward would be higher, but changing to 5, 6 or even just 1 car in the same bucket as me doesn't make a difference. I haven't quite decided if I prefer having that extra competitor in my group or not because it falls so far behind that any added urgency to go fast quickly fades. Using just 2 buckets, changing the individual AI cars to lower class ones only needs to be done once, so that's not really a factor.

I'm still experimenting, but however I do it, this will likely be how I spend most of my time playing the game anymore because it is obscenely fun. I have the HUD completely off so I have to just use my mirrors to see the prototypes coming up from behind me. I've only used the LFA so far as it's the only car I know off the top of my head that you can easily see its gauges, but it's too difficult to use with manual w/clutch (I'll take any suggestions for other A or S cars). I could always just turn the speedometer back on. Of course, it could be even better with more cars, but this is really different from the Arcade races I do in GT5 where the AI basically runs with me the entire time (and you can't make a race like this in that game) making the 2 games even more complementary for me.

The 1-1.5-mile tracks seem to be the best. Any longer and you don't get enough traffic going and any shorter and it gets too demolition derby-ish. I use a 7 second launch delay to spread the field out.

I recently started doing this as well and it's fun. I've already finished the entire event list and still want to play the game so I setup single class races for fun. I know I could do the same in the arcade mode but you don't earn any credits while having fun... lol
