It's also supposed to have a brand new 2.0 litre 16 valve turbo engine.:D

Oh, no. A thread in which enlightened 12-year-olds can tell us their educated opinions on car styling. I can't wait...

I am not 12, I am 23, and I race VW's. I also drift an S13 in my area. I agree that alot of these threads are stupid little kids trying to be noticed, but don't put me in that lot before you know who I am. ;)

 What the hell? I wasn't referring to you...

There will no doubt be an R32 version with the 4-motion. I personally like the last model GTI better, but maybe this will grow on me.

Meh, I stopped liking the Golf when they stopped making the MKIII. But i'm sure i'll be seeing zillions of them on the street, just like the MKIV (Is that 4? I suck at numerals).

Edit: I've said it before and i'll say it again, the rear looks like it's been ripped straight off the Seat Ibiza/Leon. Which is no bad thing I suppose.

geez m5power, take it easy, dont you remember you once were a kid, i almost forgot that car looks cool

i dun like the look of it it reminds me too much of that guy who makes bimmerz whatz his name bammle or sumthing lol well anyway it is ugly next time make it good vw

OK, I don't want to hear about Luddites anymore, because I vote this as "gorgeous". Here's a design that actually remembers what proportions are. No huge, pointy headlight enclosures with two tiny projectors in them - the lights fill the enclosure, they're well placed, and the shape relieves the overall 2-box of the car a bit. Ditto the taillights.

Look at the curve in the C-pillar and the way the rear door line is crisply parallel to the line of the taillight and the rear clip. Look at the way the window line crosses the apex of that C-pillar and wraps around the backglass. Somebody should lock Chris Bangle in a featureless white room for a month, with nothing but a picture of that detail to look at.

The rear spoiler is perfect, too - right size, right shape, subtle and effective. The front airdam is a bit overdone and could use a little cleaning up. The little cheekbones under the headlights are not perfect, but they work well enough and I don't have an alternative at the moment. The modelling in the door profile is nicely done, as are the wheel arches.

So stuff it, Doug. I don't want to hear about how reactionary I am. I don't want to hear about how I only like boring cars - this is damn nice, clean, and modern. Modern! Not just "striking" for the sake of being "striking".

I actually love this car.

Not that my opinion matters to the middle schoolers who call it ugly just because it can't drift or hasn't got 525bhp or some other absurd feature like gull-wing doors.

They were the ones I directed my original post at - there's several like them on this website, and it's hard to explain my true hatred for them and anybody like them.

I personally dont particularly like this car... It looks mediocre and is by no means ugly, but i think it lacks character (kinda like the last gti). I do think vw did a great job making a bigger gti while making it appear smaller in size... I do think that getting bigger and heavier is not the direction vwi should be taking the gti...

I agree that making the GTI bigger is not the direction they should be taking it. I personaly wish they would get back to the size of the MK2's or even the MK3's. I do however agree with Neon Duke, that the styling is well done, and has that German understated ellegance to it, while retaining a certain muscular edge. ;)

I saw about 50 of these new little things while in Paris - VW held a convention of some sort right in my hotel, and as I walked out of the place yesterday morning they were lining both sides of the street in nearly every color of the rainbow (I guess they are for the VW people to drive). If I hadn't been in such a hurry to get to the airport I would have taken a few pictures - sorry! But I do have to say they are a very, very attractive little car in person and really caught my eye in a city full of rounded, "sleek" compacts. I certainly wouldn't mind having one at all.

Ok, to the lamen it might look a little like it, but I think you should check out neon_dukes' post, he explained it very well. ;)
