The next-gen MX-5 Miata thread

After few days I still think that the rear end is bit ugly. But I'm really excited to see what Italians get out of it.

I have to imagine it will be quite different. Drivetrain and exterior/interior design of each car are independent of the other.

The easy way is make a smaller version of the 8C. Since the ND are using LEDs, I expect the front end to be slick. The grill opening to make use of the traditional Alfa grill. Round tailights of course. The sound of the exhaust will be the best trick. The Abarth EssEss barks and pops even at low speeds. Should be good.

Fiat is going to make a smaller version of a car they don't make?
ND headlights are not LED, if that's what you mean.

Sell it in the middle east for the love of god mazda, so I can get a used one in 5 years time.
Don't they sell the NC there?

"The 2016 MX-5 gets full LED headlights, LED fog lights, and LED daytime running lights"

What about a fully LED interior?

I know auto LED prices have come down but it can't be that cheap.

My bad. One of the guys at MRLS said the low beams themselves weren't LEDs.

Fiat/Alfa/Abarth aren't under the same maker? That's news to me. I can see the confusion in choice of words. I'll use the word design instead of make.
I wish people stopped laughing at me when I tell them my abarth was styled by ferrari. :(

Anyone for a round of "Guess the blurry engine"?

Looks like the standard 2 liter skyactiv, no? I'm guessing it will be around 165hp via "improved ecu tuning" or something like that.

RE: The horsepower, someone on Miata.net posted this:

Another interesting point is that both 1.5 and 2.0 develop their maximum hp and torque at the same rpms (6000rpm) as per Mazda specs.

Skyactiv 2.0
165ps(121kW)/6000rpm
210N・m/4000rpm

Skyactiv 1.5
120ps/6000rpm
150N・m/4000rpm

So the 7400 rpms redline would mean a significantly modified engine, be it a 1.5 or 2.0.
And if we asume the modified engine can maintain similar VE to 6800 rpms (reasonable for a 7400rpm redline), these would be the hp ratings:

Skyactiv 2.0
184hp/6800rpm

Skyactiv 1.5
134hp/6800rpm

Edit:

Is this new miata really going to weigh just 2200lbs.?
That would be really impressive.

Mazda officially said "100kg lighter than NC". So I would actually conservatively put it at 2300-ish.

Edit: According to this, a soft top NC is 2480lbs. So yeah, 2200 is a good estimate.

2200lbs might be a possibility for the supposed 1.5L.

Crap pic but...
ISE tube is still there.

imthe worlds biggest mx5 fan but this new one is rather dissapointing (looks wise) i saw some renderings of it on car and driver which looked great.

That looks smexy.

But it isn't very miata-ish. That whole 6 OG Kodo look is so evocative of high performance RWD sports car. The Miata is like the 911-- it's its own style.

It's absolutely stunning. Their new design language breaks the conventional "Mazda mold" for me. I love it.

Still going to find myself in a Mazda 6 though.

The ND makes the NC look like the odd one out in the MX-5 history. The designers definitely took inspiration from the NB.
