He already lives in a tax haven... what more can he dodge?!

He's been stung ever since the Monte Carlo Casino voided their Groupon offer.

Also...

This law firm could provide stuff enough for half a dozen James Bond movies
I'd argue that it's more the stuff of John le Carré novels.

I remember that there was a Clive Owen movie called The International that dealt with the idea of a bank getting embroiled in the drug and arms trade, and I remember that it was pretty dull (but then it was a Clive Owen movie, and he's about as interesting as mildew).

...No way. I enjoyed The International. Hell, I even own the DVD of it. :mischievous:

Besides, haven't you seen Children of Men? Shoot 'em Up? They are anything but dull...

The Dutch secretary for finances is forming a special team to deal with the Panama papers. According to him there was a 'small cheer' when the Dutch tax authorities learned about the papers. :D

Corbyn is suggesting that if we want to put a stop to "this sort of thing" then we should enforce our rule over places like the Cayman Islands etc. more thoroughly. The problem with gunboat diplomacy, of course, is that we've probably already sold our gunboats.

I wonder how many hollywood social justice celebrities are to be named. Anyhow I don't have a problem with tax havens let alone tax evaders because their actions are a reflection of how evil taxation is.

On another note its quite a shame that Frederic Bastiat isn't alive in this day and age..he would've had a field day with the Panama Papers.

Do you have a problem with elected leaders who preach one thing but do another behind closed doors?

As @R1600Turbo pointed out in the President thread, at least from a U.S. standpoint not agreeing to any trade pacts would be a very good start. But that would slow things down and we'd become a conservative nation lol

The idea of exponential growth right now comes with a price.

I would just to come out now and state that I have no links to offshore accounts in Panama and haven't been to Iceland for at least a month (they do very cheap giant packs of Persil non-bio).

So that's why Mum's gone to Iceland...

I wonder if this means the former PM will have his assets frozen?

I wonder if, apart from him losing his job, he actually did something against the law and will be prosecuted for it.

Netherlands, Luxemburg, Irland, Lichtenstein, ..... all of our countries happily played along this game....

It's no secret that you can go to a bank in all (not just those above) countries and ask to buy a letterbox company. At the time, one costed 30000€....
Starbucks is registered in the NL  ? How much tax do they pay? ;) How much does Facebook pay in Irland?

It doesn't matter if it's through letterbox companies, tax rulings,.... these companies avoid taxes, our countries help them, and the only thing that's in for us is a few unemployed less, and a very small amount of incoming tax....

And it's not just those well known countries. USA has Delaware, the "o-so-brave-and-high-moral" Germany has Ludwigshafen with 0% commercial tax, with big players like BASF there, paying taxes that every household exceeds (just as the tax FB, Google, Apple needs to pay)....

I get the whole "the state doesn't handle our money right". But if a big company doesn't pay it's taxes, the gov goes out and gets its from the average Joe, Or the average Joe's child doesn't get a new school building or ....

But sadly, as the 2008 crisis, Snowden,... showed us. Nothing will change. There will be rules. Yes. But they will hinder more the normal citizen then the big players.

Let's say they were to forbid letterbox companies worldwide, or regulate them heavily. Will it be enforced? (Lots of what happened here, should not have happened under exisitings laws, yet they were not enforced)....
And even if,....
There are funds, foundations, or other forms that lend to the same. Or we just invent a new name for an economic entity that allows for this....

Remember France and Germany wanting to regulate the stock market, precisly the stock insurances, aka CFD and the like.... Guess what the law looks like:

- Transaction on normal, conservative (low risk) stocks are taxed
- Transactions on derivates, CFD (high volatile, high risk) are not taxed

One would ask why, but then they also stock the ESM (European safety mechanism) up with CFDs....

I could go for hours on these subjects

But I still predict that something big will happen. The central banks are just postponing it with throwing out money.... THe markets are skewed. Way too much. A bang will happen. It needs to happen. It's not normal that tech companies with bad income and big loss are titled more than real world asset companies with real value and actual profit

Oh so the news from Downing Street has gone from 'Cameron never benefited from the offshore funds' to Cameron won't benefit from the offshore funds in the future'

Oh I'm glad thats cleared up then, never mind the last 30 years...

Also George Osbourne won't answer if he has benefited from the same thing! We all know his father is rich, if not richer than Cameron's and of course he will have offshore trusts.

That's what the sticking point has been - there are legitimate, legal and ethical uses for the system. The problem is that it is equally appealing to people who want to abuse it as it is to people who use it appropriately, which has exposed the flaws of the system.
