So in a few days, we will have a new President. Any thoughts?
I'm sure @niky has a few words on the election.
How much credibility would you say there is in the rumours flying around Duterte about his vigilantism and other nefarious activities? I know you're not an expert but I'm assuming you understand the language and culture better than most of us here so I'd like to hear your perspective, if you're willing to share. Same for any of the other Filipino members. I have talked to a Filipino friend who has lived in Canada for 30 years and she says she doesn't follow politics but did say some things about Duterte that I'd like to get confirmation on.The era of social media is upon us.
Instead of the internet uplifting the discourse of politics, it has reduced voters to the lowest common denominator.-
Duterte is certainly not going to be the worst president we have ever had (those who I personally know who personally know him can attest to his being an upright public servant, despite his fascist slant), but that Marcos has managed to use social media and memes to engage in mass historical revisionism is perhaps the most worrying thing to come out of this process.
Cynics will immediately assume that only opposition officials will get humiliated ...I'm kinda excited to see him humiliate corrupt officials live on TV like he used to do in Davao City.

I really don't understand the international media branding Duterte as Trump of the East and the next dictator...
I don't want to twist his words but I believe crime is the same thing as corruption.Duterte has not said much about corruption in his speeches. His whole schtick is basically crime, crime, crime. That he will eliminate it in six months.
Crime fighting is a national effort. If the national government fails to fight crime on the national level then all he can do in his city is just to keep it at bay.People claim Davao is the most crime-free city in the Philippines. Statistics don't back it up. The drug trade that he promises to eliminate is still active in Davao. Crimes still happen. Davao is, however, one of the biggest cities with the least per-capita crimes over the past several years.

Thank you for elaborating. He's Trumpish alright minus the public service. I know the sentiments of the people that he's not a decent person to be our president because of his personality. But that's who he is. That's his private thing. Me? I just focus on his political will and toughness. I believe that we the people are the threat to democracy. We give democracy a bad name. Since we got our freedom in '86 we just do whatever we want. Most Filipinos don't have discipline. And that's what preventing us to really have a progress in our country. Its sad because we are very hard working people but the government is stealing what we worked hard for. And that's where Duterte's toughness come in. To deal with the corruption in the government that crippling us for decades now.
Funny I was watching the livestream of the election and reporters in ABSCBN is interviewing a muslim attorney from Commision on Human Rights about Bangsamoro and etc. When asked about why the Abu Sayyaf won't talk for peace, he told the reporters that that's their role. They were created by the government and the CIA through a general who is a triple agent (who also a spy for NPA if I heard correctly) to destabilize the peace talks in Mindanao. The reporters were stunned and tried to cut what he was saying but the attorney finished his piece and the reporters failed. Before the interview ended, he dropped another bomb and told that the military did some of the famous bombings in the Philippines. It kinda confirmed what my former teacher/employer said. That the Abu Sayyaf was created by the government to play war games. His high ranking military cousin in ISAF told him that. But that doesn't prove anything though.
Sorry for the slow chat as I'm having difficulty putting my thoughts in English.
Can't be further from the truth.People who think no progress has been made, who think that there are no economic opportunities for people under this government are sorely deluded. Of course economic growth isn't "equitable". It will never be so. If you want a job in this new economy, GO WHERE THE FREAKING JOBS ARE. Retrain. Refocus. Get frigging paid.
Yeah...We really need some dose of iron fist. People jaywalking in front of traffic enforcers? 🤬As for 1986...

GMA released a statement this afternoon apologizing for a typographical error in their display of the vote counts of Escudero, which made it look like Chiz got a vote decrease.Just saw it just now in ABSCBN. In the Vice Presidential Race, the Marcos camp is accusing the Rebredo camp of cheating. Allegedly they caught the vote counts subtracting 35,000 votes from Escudero while Rebredo gained 1 million votes and got ahead of Marcos in just an hour. From 4AM-5PM. It looks like they're saying someone is cheating them and transferring votes from other candidates to Rebredo...
But in the interview, they say other networks also showed subtracted numbers...If they saw it, then why they didn't tell the COMELEC what's happening at that time? Kinda dumb for their part.GMA released a statement this afternoon apologizing for a typographical error in their display of the vote counts of Escudero, which made it look like Chiz got a vote decrease.

I seriously believe that if he wasn't able to produce enough info about his identity then he would have been killed right there in the car. And the police will just say their usual script to the media. And the media should stop glorifying these kinds of actions and have it investigated by themselves.
