The Philippines Thread

For the record, I didn't vote nor supported the candidacy of Duterte. I still have not voted since I become eligible decades ago. I only wanted him to become president because of his political will to destroy corruption. But now its very clear that he's abusing his power, not putting it in good use and he just won't shut up. He's really 🤬 annoying. Even my grandma said that of all the presidents since World War 2, Duterte is the worst she's ever seen. 🤬 shut up and talk about the economy and the 🤬 heavy traffic in EDSA for once. Drugs is not the only problem in our country. Its not even in the top 5 for me.

Most businessmen are not worried about his economic program, because he vowed to continue the programs of his two predecessors.

The big issue is his tempestuous pronouncements and jitters over strongarm tactics are putting international investors in wait-and-see mode.

This is what you've choose for Phillipines future....

Kinda reminds me of how Trump is vowed to cut ties with NAFTA if Mexico and Canada doesn't renegotiate.

Anyways I've supported Duterte for a long time now. Ever since the incident that happened in Davao with the involvement of Digong's daughter Sara, it made me curious to know the Duterte dynasty and that made me open my eyes that there's hope for Philippines if Duterte was president. By the time he ran for president, I prayed that he wins and not the yellow party. I was also rooting for Grace Poe until I heard she was just used by Danding Cojuangco, a Aquino-Conjaungco family member who happens to be one the reason why Philippines is suffering from corruption, and also part of the alleged Coco Levy Fund incident and also one of Marcos' cronies. By the time I heard that, I decided to choose Digong/Miriam over every 2016 presidential candidate.

When the voting session began and after 12 hours, I was disappointed because I was expecting Miriam and Digong to be at least 1st or 2nd but no. It seems Miriam is in 5th while Roxas (I hated him from the start though.) is in 2nd and Digong is in 1st,

So when Digong finally became president, I became happy that we finally have a good president. Now I want him to humiliate those corrupt officials and to expose the true nature of the Yellow party.

This is the reasoning behind why I opted for Duterte instead of all other candidates.

Binay- Only wants the "immunity idol"

Poe- How the 🤬 a funeral attendee to the late FPJ become a senator and now is running for the presidency? And what if she did win? What surname will she use? Clearly, she's being used by other people because of her name.

Roxas- He's good. But he's obviously desperate to become president. Maybe he is pressured by her mother? I don't know :D

Santiago- She's better than Duterte, Erap, Noynoy, Gloria and maybe even Ramos but she's very ill and stress can kill so...

Seneres- He passed away before the elections.

Very shallow reasoning. But that's why we have democracy so we could choose anyone, in any way we want.

Which is what I hated the most about her circumstances. Nevertheless, I voted for her simply because she was very much the most qualified individual out of the candidates.

What sucks the most is that this woman didn't win back in '92 when she deserved to, and she came into the 2016 elections at her physically weakest point.

We're left to dwell on what-ifs regarding MDS as the Philippine President.

It's disappointing that her mental health seems to be in decline, as well.

Considering she was one of the few judges who actually stood up to Marcos in the courts during Martial Law, it was weird when she chose Bongbong Marcos as a running mate. Bongbong, who almost won, while MDS got zip in terms of votes.

At least 14 people have been killed and dozens hurt in an explosion at a night market in Davao City in the Philippines, according to the Philippines News Agency, quoting a police official. Earlier, Chief Superintendent Manuel Gaerlan, the director of Region 11 of the Philippine National Police, told CNN Philippines that 12 people were killed and 60 injured. He said 10 people died at the scene and two died after being taken to the Southern Philippines Medical Center.

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte placed the nation on lockdown Friday night after an explosion at a Davao City market killed at least 14 people and injured 71, the official Philippines News Agency reported. Duterte, saying the explosion was an act of terrorism, authorized the police and military to search cars and frisk people at checkpoints, the PNA said. He put the nation under a "state of lawlessness," saying he has not declared martial law and has not suspended the writ of habeas corpus, the PNA said.
No group has claimed responsibility but Duterte said it's possible the explosion "could be a reprisal" from extremists. Andanar mentioned the possible involvement of the Islamist militant Abu Sayyaf group or drug lords, according to ABS-CBN. Duterte, the longtime mayor of Davao City, was elected president last May. He campaigned on a no-nonsense approach to crime and launched an intense -- and deadly -- crackdown on drug dealers.

Sorry if I say this but I think our local media is the one to blame this. Digong did say that to Obama but not a personal remark but our media reports that he personally called Obama a 🤬.
Our local media is becoming a nuisance to Digong because the oligarchs (who happens to have connections with corrupt gov't officials) who owns almost all of the media outlets groups are doing biased reports about Digong's actions. Sure he may be doing dirty things but he regrets that and apologizes it but due to the biased reporting of our local media, international media takes what our local media says. So to me Digong will be doing the right thing after the drug war, he's gonna start flushing out oligarchs who are responsible for the corruption of my country.

Well even if hes kidding like the UN remark, Obama is already cancelled his dialogue so, yeah. That can be taken seriously.

You're right though. Digong needs to controlling his speechs but still I like his current duty as president its just that his attitude that needs polishing.

Obama actually didn't take offense. He listens to rap, dawg, so he's down with that 🤬 🤬. Chill.

Besides, his interpreters and intelligence operatives understand Filipino... not just the formal vernacular... but street slang (they send groups to train here from time to time). So there's no misunderstanding on their end.

-

But the furore over the misinterpretation misses some of the more salient points of that talk... Duterte cursed at the media during that event, and then went into a long tirade over the history of the United States and human rights violations dating back over a century... which would be all well and fine if Obama had been the President the whole time.

Considering a century ago Obama's ancestors neither had the right to vote or go to school in America, I think lecturing him on the human rights abuses of the bad ole U.S. of A was a bit redundant.

-

More to the point, however, Duterte has conditioned the media and the public to expect him to talk in hyperbole, emotionally charged catch-phrases and curse words. As with Trump, if you make a campaign out of that kind of talk, don't complain if that's what people take away from your speeches. You're a big boy now. Make the damn adjustments or suffer the consequences.

No one could really fault the media for presenting Digong's remarks the way they do, it's somewhat expected, given the way he speaks, which is something he REALLY needs to work on.

Yes, the international community needs to get used to this, I think some of them may already have, given how he's already been portrayed as such during the elections.

It's just becoming quite comedic how his spokespeople always tries to clean up after him whenever he speaks in public.

It's like saying "🤬🤬 mo! Babarilin kita!" only to have your friend cover for you later "Ay joke lang po yun, di po iyon ibig sabihin niya."

All Duterte has to do to criticize Americans is to use Obama's own words from Laos.

Paraphrasing:

"Americans destroyed the environment, not because it's necessary for development, but because we're lazy"
"Americans don't know anything about the rest of the world because we're lazy"

It's not hard to find source material of Obama criticizing Americans, he does it just about every time he visits another country.

He's experiencing resistance from his supporters in the military, and, more importantly, his constituents.

His tone in speaking about China is vacillating between gushingly positive and guardedly neutral.

His biggest back-pocket backer, former President and Army Chief Fidel V. Ramos, has started to openly criticize his moves, asking him to be more consistent and more circumspect in his words. (Ramos is the guy who finally convinced Duterte to run)

Of all the Presidents sine Marcos, Ramos has been the most media savvy and diplomatic. Duterte should treat his advice as gospel.

Thia is like Turkey where they get closer to Russia-China side while still maintaining US relation.

For different reasons, of course.

So what's your opinion on Duterte today. Some says his Narcotics killing policy are controversial. But his approval is still relatively high last time I heard.

The current crapstorm over the dead kid who was supposedly a drug runner... wait... he isn't... who supposedly shot back... with a gun in the wrong hand, curled in a fetal position with three bullet wounds in the back of his head... after CCTV showed police beating him up and dragging him into an alley... wait! The CCTV is fake!... but already validated by the community watch and police...

The kid was supposedly a suspect... but not on the drug watchlist... no, wait! They had new intel! From a single faceless guy hiding behind a towel... and the family was a bunch of drug addicts / pushers... at least until the father dared the police to take a drug test with him...

The Duterte social media propagandists are in a tizzy. They started out trying to paint the kid as a drug pusher, then started sharing links to kids raped by young addicts, or killed by young pushers... and then when it turned out that the kid was most likely innocent (and, get this, a Duterte supporter)... and Duterte himself noted the intel was likely wrong... they started asking why people weren't showing outrage now over the deaths of other kids. Some of whom died several years ago.

It's a crapstorm. House of lies all crashing down. Duterte is backpedalling to save face, but it remains to be seen what the effects of this will be.

I've always said from the start that the war wasn't being prosecuted properly in some quarters. Many friends and acquaintances who work with the poor are dismayed by it... dubious searches... planted evidence... "shootouts" that always end up with "suspects" (some proven innocent) with bullets in their heads... it's all very shoddy and stupid and it's about time they shaped up or stepped out.

Heads are going to roll. Unfortunately, they're not going to roll far up enough the chain to stop this madness. And in the meantime, there's growing evidence that Duterte's son is involved in a meth smuggling scheme at the port. There have been rumors for years that he's involved with drugs, and now it's all coming out.

I kinda see it coming. Felt theres something wrong for a president that used to be a head of a shooting squad for a long time regime.

The "war of drugs" thing can be shifted slightly so that any critics can be slienced under the drug conviction or something similar. Also its not like drugs are the only crime that matters. What about the journalists killings and such.
