Since the news story was from 2016; some American airlines all introduced "Basic Economy" or called it something like a Basic Fare. Really, it was to compete with airlines who charged for carry-on bags and seat assignments by offering a fare that's like $50-60 cheaper. If you're not picky, pack very light, don't change plans, want a good chance of being bumped off the flight, and don't care about airline miles, you're pre-approved! Frequent fliers avoid it because you're unrewarded for your troubles and it doesn't apply to status*.

I know, not funny...Except when it could only sell me an outbound fare but not an inbound fare home. (Thankfully, I don't have to select the most basic fare for work, because one-quarter of my bookings get changed, anyhow.)

* this means nothing unless you have to constantly subject yourself to the fun of airport security, airports in general, and rude passengers. Then, you want everything you can get to minimize this experience 2-4 times a week.

The class below this class is being duct-taped to the skin of the plane.

Top of fuselage: $50 surcharge
Wing seats (lay down seating only): $300 fee
Underbelly: $100 (preferred, can exit quicker)
Lavatory waste nozzle inlet: The one ticket with no up-charges.
