So as it turns out USB tethering is free with Android 4.0(Ice cream sandwich), so I have a fairly decent and mostly reliable 3G connection for now. I've got to wait a bit for a real internet connection, though.

He posted in the Anime Thread the other week saying that he "didn't get 'it'". I take it he missed a "Why" and the beginning of his post, because then it would at least make some sense, plus you would have to be drunk and/or stupid to ask if there was such a thread when you're actually in the thread.
And to answer his apparent question, try watching an episode or 2 (preferably not the season 1 pilot episodes). If you like it, then cool. If not, then whatever.

Yeah, that's actually understandable. At least we have an understanding of what you meant now. Have you looked back through the thread to see what usually goes on in here? We mostly post fan art and videos these days between seasons when new show content isn't available. Hopefully you'll find stuff you like, plus I think it'd be worth watching a few episodes to understand the appeal really.
And an episode suggestion, my favourite from Season 1:

The show itself is just good. Good writing, great animation, great characters, some fantastic voice talent, and great songs. I know there are other shows that have this, but I think what makes this so special and popular is because it's much more open in terms of what can be done with the characters and the world in general. It's specific enough to provide a great base for writers, artists, and whoever. But at the same time it's open enough to interpretation to allow for artists and writers to take the characters in just about any direction while not totally destroying the character or trait in the world. At least, that's what drives the creative side, but as far as other fans, most of the people I see posting are still into it entirely thanks to the artistic community. This show inspires people to get creative, and when people get creative, they inspire those around them to be creative. And then the creativity just keeps spreading.
And the following isn't as big as it seems in terms of number of people, it's just that the majority of the community actively participates in it. It's not like other shows where they just have vast numbers of fans who casually watch and like the FB page. Also, at least, from my point of view, anyway. We would still exist to discuss the show occasionally, but it'd only be while a season going or probably only while the episodes are playing. This show strikes a great balance, if the characters were any more in depth or any less developed, I think the community would have never gotten as large as it is, and it would have started to die out by now.
I mean, I love some of the characters, and I know I wouldn't feel nearly as strongly about any of them if it weren't for this community and the way it expands on the already loveable base that the show provides.
I just spent the last 3 weeks of my time in TRACEN Cape May explaining to 4 Company Commanders and 75 other recruits what Bronies were and why the show had such an enormous following. And this is something along the lines of what I said.
Anyway, here's this neat looking Rainbow Dash thingy:

It started off as a small discussion about a show review on 4Chan (of all places) just after the first episode aired nearly 2 years ago, and from there it's gained so much momentum that it's pretty much self-sustaining thanks to the sheer amount of content created by the fans. Fans that appreciate the quality of the animation, music and episode plots that appeal to more than just the "target demographic". Chances are it wouldn't have such a large fanbase if it wasn't for that really.
I mean, 2 years after the first season began and we have a full-length episode in the making... that's entirely fan-made, as well as loads of other animation shorts made by fans. We've come a million miles since the start, plus the fandom is just as capable of surviving during periods without new episodes.
And what Minty posted is probably the best explanation that would be of use to anyone asking why the show has such a pronounced following.
