I have to say the track flora looks much better, all of the trees and shrubs. They are still 2D sprites but modelled better. One thing I noticed is if you go slow and look to the right or left you will notice the trees actually rotate towards the position of the player. This helps hide the fact that they are 2D and make it look better. Just a small thing I've noticed that wasn't something in GT5.

Really ? Wow. Stick some tinsel and bells on em lol.

That's why the grandstands are empty, all ls the people are rotating the trees.

I didn't notice this.

It happens in Forza Horizon too with some of the bushes. I thought it was pretty funny in there, actually, although I haven't really been looking at the trees in the GT6 demo.

In the replay you can watch the leaves falling at Autumn Ring.

I'm pretty sure the whole tree rotating were also in GT5

These trees were in some GT5 tracks & I saw this technic in some games Like Forza Motorsport 4 (for some trees) and Forza Horizon. Even The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion in X360 had these trees! :D (dont know about Skyrim in consoles)
Its a scary technic!! :D

If you think its bad in gt5 then look at Just Cause 2, its almost comical there.

To be honest though, does this detract from the game when you are racing, PD had to make shortcuts to help the PS3 cope and this was one of them. For one I'm pleased that it was this they did rather then something more integral to the game.

It's not a big issue for me TBH either. It probably beneficial to photo mode too. Helps to hide 2D images on a still frame.

It seems it's a very oldschool technique that makes it much lighter on the hardware. In GT5, trees were 2D, but they were assembled as if they were made of cardboard, creating a 3D structure. the rotating trees is a cheap solution, but at least now we're able to see the pretty face of trees all the time :D

I remember games like Okami had this too. Trees showed the same face all the time. Skyrim has full 3D trees as far as I've seen. Even in the crappier PS3 version.

This technique is really old, and some might remember it goes way back to the Doom era.

Driver 2 on the PS1 had complete buildings (like the Statue of Liberty in Vegas) doing this.
Like mentioned, it's a common thing and almost every game this gen featured it in some way.

I know it's an old method, they did it in Sonic Adventure 2 and games older than that. I just didn't notice it in GT5 and if it does do that then it isn't near to the same effect as in GT6 because in GT5 you could see the 2D sprites sticking out and looking odd where as in GT6 it covers this up.

Whoa. Chill.

Heh, I was...

You're the one with the issue: "no more 2D"? Pfff, what do you think your screen is? :P

In seriousness, though, if you want games to look their best, you have to take this kind of stuff. Unimportant scenery items simply don't deserve more than a couple of polys, especially when there's so many of them! Those unused polys can be put to use on the interesting stuff instead! ;)

The best way to see this is to drive the Leave(most annoying car ever) on the autum ring mini and watch the replay. Change the view in the replay to the in car view watching the driver from the side as you can see trough the side window you can see it very good that the trees are turning with you. Never noticed this in Gt5
