Of course they rotate, they are sprites!

Back in my day, there were games were the trees even rotated up and down. So when you crashed you car and got catapulted into the air, the trees and bushes would still "look" at you. ^^

Those trees were also in GT5, on Spa for example. I think they look quite convincing and they are resource effective.

The problem is, once you have seen it you can never unsee it.

THE 2D rotating trees were in GT5 and are a common feature in modern games. They save in processing power and are usually used for background detail or as tufts of grass. They are also in The Last of Us.

2D trees are in NFS and BF3. On kharg island in Bf3 go toward the tower. Continue going to the boundary. (Use a jeep or jet) you'll see these trees.

Nothing new, reminds me of the Twisted Metal days on the PS1. Though for a game in 2013 it's a bit oldschool.

Sprites? Did I make it back to 1987?

Great Scott!
Nope, plenty of "modern" games still use them.
I take it you missed the Back to the Future reference there :sly:

If you go on a course maker track in GT5, say Liege, you can see the 2D crowd pivot to face you as well, especially when in photomode. Quite unnerving...

all games with trees use this on the leaves unless they want to get the X cross effect , to get the best results u must stack them like the smoke in this game . its stacked using the same always face the camera technique, most games use this effect for explosions etc.

And it's even worse now that plants started to do it too. It's like they're watching our every move...waiting... :scared:

It actually pretty funny to see that most people that blurb stuff like "oldschool" and "next gen" are completely oblivious about how games actually work.

Sprites are everywhere, in this gen, last gen and next gen too.
Video gaming is an illusion nothing is as it seem to be.
