Welcome to my custom career mode for Gran Turismo 7. Developed over the course of two years, I have attempted to plug a hole left by Polyphony Digital and utilise the in-game tools to create a classic GT style career mode, with a few twists for a fresh experience.

I have to give a huge, huge thanks to @pritchyTim for giving feedback every step of the way, suggesting ideas which ultimately helped make this better. He has an awesome GT3 Remake in GT7 project in the works if you're interested, you can find it in the recent custom race thread pages.

I also have to thank Roflwaffle, the YouTuber who covers Gran Turismo. Their breakdowns and critiques of GT7's career, and references as to why they prefer older games, and also their video about their dream racing game, was food for thought and inspiration for this.

So with that, here is a rundown of what this career features:

  • Classic GT style progression with multiple leagues, each a step up in car performance and race length, all leading into high-level motorsport events. Each league uses a league-long championship system, in which each race counts for points, and a championship runs from the first event in the league, until the end. Whoever has the most points after the final race, wins. A league is much like a long motorsport season, in that sense.

  • Multiple motorsport series' as you build towards them over the course of your career - competing in them across your license acquisition events, as well. Once you reach the later phases of your career, and have access to the highest level events, you can play on a seasonal cycle, or switch between them, now that you have the required licenses. For example, going from Formula 1 to NASCAR racing, or WEC to Formula X.

  • Motorsport licenses see you start from grassroots racing and progress into the elite echelons of the sport, going wheel-to-wheel with your fellow Formula drivers or out-scrapping endurance racers.

  • Opponent permeance with drivers you meet in lower leagues potentially racing alongside you at the highest levels, depending on their finishing position in the league standings. Each driver in the mainline leagues (excluding the Endurance League) has a name and backstory, intended to ground them as more than a one-off opponent (not all original driver bios are yet complete. Over the week, I will update them all. Everything else in the career is finished and final).

  • A selection of races outside of the mainline career path which utilise some of the legend and invitational cars in the game - this will be expanded further in time. It was something I had to reduce in order to get it out, but the first thing I will be doing is adding more events to that section. There's also the Maestro League, a league in which you take on legends of the automotive and motorsport world across short, two race series'.

  • A Manufacturer League heavily inspired by Gran Turismo 4, to give purpose to many cars in the game which can otherwise be passed by for another in the same category, or ignored altogether.

  • Missions, also inspired by GT4, but the missions themselves are a bit more of a deviation from official games. They're more experimental, but I have tested them to ensure that they are possible. The missions also contain a variety of race series with driver lists and premises that would not fit in the mainline events.

  • A selection of rally events, but more like a traditional timed rally. You must still beat your opponents and take home the most points, but the events take place on a path across the continent in which the event began.

  • Two ways of playing - Quick Play, and Custom Play (more info below).

  • As an aside, if people enjoy this and post pictures or write posts about their races, I would love to feature a short news section/clipping for that! I will be reserving the second post on this thread in case. It will be a short snippet of an article with perhaps a photo attached. Something like:

  • "M. Scott snatches razor-thin victory at Interlagos to clinch the title!" as the headline, and a couple or a few paragraphs about the race/result. If that sounds interesting, let me know!

  • Here are a list of available motorsport series' in the career - these are separate from the main GT style events, which take place from the Beginner League to the Elite League. The Endurance League also features, and contains some of the below championships in a "Seasonal Championships" section, in which each series within runs on a season-by-season basis, where points and accolades carry over. So, if you want, you can become a legend in V8 Supercars, or a GT World Challenge icon. Each season is represented in full with a representative calendar from the 2023 season, though the Formula 1, 2, and 3 calendars have been updated a little to more closely match the 2024 season. As I set a public deadline of May 30th (which helped me immensely to get this finished), I did not have time to update them to the 2024 season. I needed the pressure of the deadline. Here is the list of motorsport series':

  • Formula 1
  • Formula X
  • Formula 2
  • Super Formula
  • Formula 3

  • Quick Play is a "plug in and play" way to experience the career. For the majority of events, only you as the player will need to set your car up to the specified event parameters. The game will automatically generate a grid around your car's PP level. In the majority of main leagues, drivers are not tracked, and there is no points system, as names cannot be changed when the grid is auto-generated. See more information about this and how the career functions when in “Quick Play” in the next spoiler tag.

  • Custom Play is for the person who wants to go deep and manually set up every opponent AI car for the event. So, for example, a race featuring low-RPM turbocharged cars in Custom Play would have every AI car set up with a low-RPM turbocharger. It can be any car for the AI as long as it meets the regulations.

In the “Quick Play” mode, outside of specific licenses and leagues, there are no seasonal points systems, and drivers are not given custom names or tracked. This is because, when letting the game generate the grid, positions and names cannot be adjusted.

Therefore, for all mainline leagues (Beginner to Elite), each race is standalone. No points are tallied, and drivers change for each race.

For license events, as they are effectively spec one-make events, the “Custom Play” approach remains for “Quick Play.” Therefore, the points system and driver tracker is also in play in a season format.

For Tier 2 Closed-Wheel License Events (GT4 championships and BTCC), the opponent car of choice can be three or more cars across the grid, as a balance between variety and ease of play. Drivers are tracked in these license events and points systems are in play in a season format.

Endurance League Seasonal Championships retain the custom assigned grid, however the opponent car of choice can be three or more cars across the grid. This persists for all categories: Gr.4, Gr.3, Gr.2, Gr.1. As with the licenses, points and drivers are tracked in a season format.

Championship League races are much like licenses, as they are a spec series, and as such, points and drivers are tracked in a season format.

———

The following leagues do NOT have a points and driver tracker system in “Quick Play”:

  • Beginner League
  • National League
  • Professional League
  • Expert League
  • Endurance League
  • Elite League
  • Rally League
  • Legend League
  • Exclusive League
  • Manufacturer League

The following leagues DO have a points and driver tracker system in “Quick Play”:
  • License Acquisition Events
  • Endurance League Seasonal Championships
  • Championship League
  • Maestro League

As outlined in the quick play regulatory statement, a number of leagues are “Particular-Spec”, meaning that they require the opponent cars to be set up and customised to meet the event parameters. These are:
  • Tier 5, Tier 4, Tier 3 and Tier 1 Closed-Wheel License Acquisition Events
  • All Open-Wheel License Acquisition Events
  • Maestro League
  • Missions
Quick Play Regulatory Statement

The Global Motorsport Federation (hereafter GMF) announce today an initiative to allow the world’s best drivers - both proven and yet to be discovered - to compete in comparatively low-cost spec, semi-spec, and relative-spec series’, mirroring the current events of world motorsport.

These championships and events will contain the addition of “(S)”, “(S2)”, and “(RS)” to their titles, indicating that they are spec, semi-spec, relative-spec, respectively.

A multitude of particular-spec (PS) events are also present, however these do not fall under the “Quick Play” banner, as they require specific cars for both player and competitors, potentially tuned to set parameters.

———————————————————————————————————————

  • A spec series (S) sees each competitor drive an identical car, provided by the GMF on the player’s behalf.

  • Only the setup may be adjusted, except for the ECU and/or power limiter, which may be decreased beyond the specified maximum limit to increase competitiveness with other racers.

———

  • The following events fall into the spec series (S) category:
    • Formula 1 (S)
    • Formula X (S)
    • Formula 2 (S)
    • Formula 3 (S)
    • Formula Junior (S)
    • International Stock Car Championship Cup Series (S)
    • V8 Supercars (S)
    • Porsche Supercup (S)
    • Porsche Carrera Cup (S)
    • Clio Cup (S)
    • Yaris Cup (S)
    • MX-5 Cup (S)
    • FIA World Karting Championship (S)
    • Continental Karting Championship (S)
    • National Karting Championship (S)

———————————————————————————————————————

  • A semi-spec series (S2) consists of cars meeting the regulations, which are assigned to each competitor solely by the GMF.

  • In the case of a semi-spec series, the player need not assign vehicles themselves - instead, let the system automatically choose depending on the category (Gr.1, Gr.2, Gr.3, Gr.4, Gr.B).

  • As with a full spec series, only the car’s setup can be changed, except for the ECU and/or power limiter, which may be decreased beyond the specified maximum limit to increase competitiveness with other racers.

———

  • The following events fall into the semi-spec series (S2) category:
    • World Endurance Championship (S2)
    • Super GT (S2)
    • GT World Challenge (S2) (America, Europe, Asia)
    • IMSA SportsCar Championship (S2)
    • GT4 (S2) (America, European Series, Asia-Pacific)
    • British GT (S2)
    • British Touring Car Championship (S2)

———————————————————————————————————————

  • Relative-spec events (RS) feature car assignment protocols identical to S2 events. This is in place during all events which are not part of a seasonal championship.

  • This means that, for example, the opponent car list for National League races will be automatically chosen by the system in the same way it is for Gr.1, Gr.2, Gr.3, Gr.4 and Gr.B events.

  • In RS events, you will need to tune your car to the specified parameters, but the opponent car list is decided by the system.

———

  • The following leagues consist of events that fall into the relative-spec (RS) category:
    • Beginner League (RS)
    • National League (RS)
    • Professional League (RS)
    • Expert League (RS)
    • Elite League (RS)
    • Rally League (RS)
    • Legend League
    • Exclusive League
    • Unique League

———

  • The following leagues consist of events that do not fall into the relative-spec (RS) category:
    • Events in the Championship League
    • Seasonal Championships section of the Endurance League
    • License Acquisition Events
    • These are instead a mix of S and S2 events, outlined at the top of the document.

———————————————————————————————————————

  • Particular-spec events (PS) require certain cars for both the player, and other competitors, all of which may need tuning to specific detail.

  • Each car in the event may be tuned differently, and the player must procure the vehicles in order to compete in these events.

  • The following leagues consist of events that fall into the particular-spec (PS) category.
    • Tier 5, Tier 4, and Tier 3 Closed-Wheel License Acquisition Events
    • All Open-Wheel License Acquisition Events
    • Maestro League
    • Missions

———————————————————————————————————————

  • Motorsport Licenses, in lieu of traditional licenses - and GT7 has them anyhow, so I wanted to try something different. In this career, while you can complete the Beginner League without a license, to progress further, you will need to acquire a Motorsport License - which has two versions: Open-wheel, and closed-wheel. They both begin at Tier 5 (the lowest), and each successive league requires a higher level closed-wheel license - but, you will also need a high level open-wheel license in order to compete in open-wheel events.
  • The way you earn these licenses is through race series and championships, such as national karting championships, the MX-5 Cup, GT4 Americas, Formula Junior, Porsche Carrera Cup, Formula 3, and more. Earn enough points to finish high enough in the standings for that season, and you will earn a higher tier license, unlocking access to new leagues and league events.

  • If you intend to ultimately only compete in, for example, the World Endurance Championship, once you reach it, a Tier 1 closed-wheel license will be required. It is only if you want to cross over into open-wheel racing, that you will need an open-wheel license. However, as closed-wheel licenses are required for regular league progression, you cannot only obtain open-wheel licenses, as you must complete leagues such as the National, Professional, and Expert League, in order to be eligible for a Tier 1 Open-Wheel License, or a Super License.

  • For both open and closed-wheel licenses, if you have the cash, you can skip straight to the Tier 1 License Acquisition Events, bypassing the requirement for previous licenses to be acquired. This is not cheap - but it intends to replicate the ability to effectively buy out a seat. This will also unlock all events previously locked to lower level licenses, for that category of car (open or closed-wheel). This is also a way to avoid re-playing the whole league again if you do not make it into the required finishing bracket.

  • The idea behind doing it this way is to give a fear of failure, but there's also an option there if you just want to progress after a long season. However, a long season also allows for a points deficit to be clawed back, and with previous race results determining the grid order, a streak of wins could set you up nicely for the final standings.

Custom Career Event Regulations

In all vehicles, unless otherwise specified, install a power restrictor, or, if an adjustable ECU is installed by default, set one or the other to 96% once at the PP limit. So for example, 600 PP would become 590 PP.

This depends on the car’s power vs. your opponents’. It might be less, for example, 97%. The league-wide percentage reduction will be listed at the top of each league.

If you set the AI to use the car with 100% power, then load the event, you can set your car’s power to 97% and the AI’s car will still be at 100% power, as long as you don’t re-select their car to your current one.

Modifications are allowed unless otherwise specified, however, only before the ECU/Power Limiter percentage decrease is applied.

Race Distance

For certain endurance races, the race distance is divided into four or more lengths
:

  • The full race distance
  • The full distance divided by two
  • The full distance divided by three
  • The full distance divided by four or more

The race distance for Formula 1 and some other long races is divided into three lengths:

  • The full race distance
  • The full distance divided by two
  • The full distance divided by three

For Formula 2, Formula 3 and some other events, the race distance is divided into two lengths:

  • The full race distance
  • The full distance divided by two

You can choose whether you want to play a longer race, or a shorter one, whichever you prefer. There are no restrictions on choosing a different race distance during a season.

Tyre Statement (F1, F2, F3, SF, WEC, V8 Supercars)

Pirelli, Yokohama Tire, Dunlop and Michelin (hereinafter referred to as “The Four”) have agreed to a partnership in which they will utilise their shared knowledge to develop a “Racing Hard” tyre for use in the FIA Formula 1, Formula 2, and Formula 3 Championships, alongside the Japanese Super Formula Championship, GT World Challenge, British GT, the Supercars Championship, and the World Endurance Championship.

Pirelli will remain the sole tyre supplier for Formula 1, Formula 2, Formula 3, GT World Challenge, and the British GT Championship, while Yokohama Tire continues to do the same for Super Formula, Dunlop for the Supercars Championship, and Michelin for World Endurance Championship.

The Racing Hard tyre allows for drivers to push from the moment the lights go out, to when the flag drops. We believe this will create more exciting on-track action and be more enjoyable for the drivers.

Under this agreement, sidewall branding may display any of the four brands, no matter the tyre provider for a specific series.

Racing Soft Tyre

In the event of a drying track wherein a car is currently equipped with Intermediate or Wet tyres for the first time and is entering the pits to switch to a dry compound, the Global Motorsport Federation (hereinafter GMF) have asserted that drivers will be required to fit a brand new “Racing Soft” tyre developed by The Four, in order to ensure drivers can push to the maximum, without regards to lesser grip produced by harder compounds.

Once this has been fulfilled, tyre choice from then on is unrestricted.

Racing Soft Tyre Special Condition

In the event that a vehicle comes equipped with Racing: Soft tyres, that compound is to be used for the race start, and the Racing: Hard tyre may only be equipped during a pit stop.

The same regulation is in place should a car come with Racing: Medium tyres as standard.

In the event of two (2) or more Teams being tied on points at the end of the Championship, the final Teams Championship order will be determined in accordance with each Teams overall placing in each race of the Championship as follows.

The Team with the greater number of first place finishes will be awarded the higher place in the final Teams Championship order.

If this fails to break the tie, then the Team with the greater number of second place finishes will be awarded the higher place in the Teams Championship order and so on until the tie is broken.

Update: New regulations for setting the grid order and options for multi-race seasonal series events

No event in the career is run under a reverse grid system. The career documents are currently being updated to reflect this change, and so you may notice this in a certain event’s details - please refer to this section of the post in that case.

———

All license events are seasonal racing series. All events within the “Seasonal Championships” section of the Endurance League are seasonal racing series.

All other leagues which have a dedicated driver’s tab above the drop-down header are league-long championships.

Your starting position for the first race of each league-long championship league is pre-set, with the AI grid order being randomised by the player.

The next race after the first in the league, and all following races, for all future events in that league, the grid order is determined by the previous race results.

———

For the first race in a seasonal racing series, or a league in which each event is its own contained championship (noted at the top of the league), the grid position for the player will be pre-determined, and the AI grid order assigned in a random order by the player.

For each race after the first, the grid order will be determined by the previous race results. This is in effect for all leagues unless otherwise specified, all licenses, and every event in the career unless noted.

This also means that, if you finish the first event of a league, the grid order for the first race of the second event is determined by the results of event 1’s final race.

———

If an event is a seasonal racing series, the results of the final race do not set the grid for the event/series below that, which is its own individual championship. That next event’s grid order is pre-set as per the event details, and after the first race, the grid order is determined by the previous race results.

Once the final race is reached in a seasonal series, you can either start a new season (starting that same series over again) in which the grid order is determined by the final race results of the previous season, or move on to the next series below, in which your starting position for the first race is pre-set as per the event details.

For seasonal series’ events with two or three races in a single round (Super Formula excluded), an option to play only one, two, or all three races in a round is now included.

Please note that these changes are still being applied to the career documents and as such the event details may not yet reflect these changes. Please refer to this part of the post if that is the case.

With the regulations out of the way, the racing can begin! Take your first step either by participating in the Beginner League, or obtaining a Tier 5 license through karting events. In each league, you face set drivers which are the same from the first race of a league, to the last, and some can carry over into the next league depending on their results.

Each driver's nationality is outlined beside their name in the Driver List, using the three letter code for their country.

For each tier of license and league, there are Google documents containing all of the event details.

The outline on the left side of the screen will allow you to jump to any specific race among the list. To expand a piece of text in the document, such as the "Beginner League" text, click on the little arrow to the left of the text.

There is also a "global" document, which contains all the licenses and leagues in one. I'll post that at the end of the individual license/league document spoiler tags.

A spreadsheet by @pritchyTim is also attached, allowing you to track both your progress, and the progress of other drivers you’re competing against across the leagues. Check back frequently for updates, as new licenses and leagues are added. Right now, the Beginner League is complete.

Lights out!

This sounds awesome, how do I join in?
Just follow the spoiler tags for the licenses and leagues ^_^ The spoiler tags about the quick/custom play, as well as the regulations and points systems will explain the "global" variables for each event, such as "Boost" almost always being set to "Weak" unless otherwise noted.

Updated with new “Quick Play” details. I did not take into account that driver names can’t be changed when the grid is auto generated. As a result, for the majority of leagues in the career, points are not tallied and drivers are not tracked when in “Quick Play”. My apologies, I should’ve checked that.

Here are the new details:

In the “Quick Play” mode, outside of specific licenses and leagues, there are no seasonal points systems, and drivers are not given custom names or tracked. This is because, when letting the game generate the grid, positions and names cannot be adjusted.

Therefore, for all mainline leagues (Beginner to Elite), each race is standalone. No points are tallied, and drivers change for each race.

For most license events, as they are effectively spec one-make events, the “Custom Play” approach remains for “Quick Play.” Therefore, the points system and driver tracker is also in play in a season format.

These are:

  • Tier 5, Tier 4, Tier 3, and Tier 1 Closed-Wheel License Acquisition Events
  • All Open-Wheel License Acquisition Events
  • Maestro League
  • Missions

Outside of that, I’m working on a spreadsheet that will allow you to track the driver and team points for each league and championship. I hope to have it finished by the end of today, and I will update the post when it is done 😊

Thank you for the warm reception! Hope you’re enjoying it, and please feel free to send any feedback you may have.

Wow! A lot of thought and work going into that. I feel intrigued but at the same time (maybe due to not being a native speaker and having no experience with custom races) i find it complicated and don't get everything you are explaining. I hope i will have time to tackle this in the future. Maybe i will have a lot of questions. ;)

Hey, thank you for the kind words! I did write it a little complex, specifically trying to emulate how regulations are written. Just trying to immerse everything if that makes sense. Is there anything specific you don’t understand? I can explain more clearly 😊

Thanks. It will take some time until i can get into it.

If you’re wondering how best to keep track of your journey, I’m building out a spreadsheet and want to share it for copy/reuse. Be sure to check back soon/frequently for updates - it’s presently built out halfway through the National league but will take some time to fully evolve. This past week (written June 20th) I’ve added a few new tricks (handling teams, driver promotions, and tier4 license events) and am pretty nicely lined up to mainly focus on adding more events for the next update. Get it while it’s hot!

Here is the live link - CUSTOM CAREER
(requires a Google account to copy, I will periodically reattach an excel file as well but it might not be latest-state)

Use the Championship Tracker tab for each series. Choose the series name at the top, track finishing positions and fastest laps and re-sort as needed. Points, event info, and drivers will update automatically, though you do have to add the series’ total points to each driver’s League/season total column (do this before clearing the grid!).

IMG_5393.jpeg

Use the “Career Home” tab to build out your garage, track your overall progression, and manage your funds. I will need to play with the payout balance/scaling, right now it uses “10 times Gran Turismo 3’s payouts,” haha. Haven’t worked prize cars in yet, we’ll figure out if we want those or not…they do kind of work against the streamlining I’ve gone for - all you need to do is list your finishing positions to build your pile of winnings. (Sidenote - if you REALLY want prize cars go use my GT3 Remake spreadsheet)

Lastly, a reminder to please keep a bookmark on the original documentation from the top of this thread. While I have pulled over much of the information needed for building each event, I haven’t gotten everything; it is not necessarily intuitive as a standalone resource nor intended to be one.

Good luck, have fun!

The post has been updated with a change to how the grid order is set for almost all races across the career. This is intended to improve racing for certain racing series’, and also to make setting the grid easier where previously only the races of a specific motorsport round had grid order instructions. Now, the whole series follows the same approach, and indeed almost everything in the career.

Also: for seasonal series’ events with two or three races in a single round (Super Formula excluded), an option to play only one, two, or all three races in a round is now included.

Please note that these changes are still being applied to the career documents and as such the event details may not yet reflect these changes. Please refer to this part of the post if that is the case.

Setting the Grid Order for All Races in this Career

No event in the career is run under a reverse grid system. This is currently being updated, and so you may notice this in a certain event’s details - please refer to this section of the post in that case.

I was skimming through these events and noticed that there are racing teams you can join. Do we need to look for liveries for those?
You don’t have to if you don’t want to. It’s really up to player choice. In the event that you don’t, the governing body could have assigned spec-liveries for all cars (you can kind of head canon it that way). With that said I’m not sure if there are liveries for some of the teams, which are lesser known.

I spent a little time in this thread and looking at the spreadsheets yesterday and there's just one little point I'm apparently ignorant about...

I don't see any details about how you are meant to manage your 'career bank' and garage.

Are we supposed to be creating an imaginary in-career car collection based from the winnings of our races starting at the Go-Kart series? Only spending the credits based on event earnings, ignoring our GT7 collection and credits? This would mean manually calculating our wallet balance at all times, correct?

Yes, and no. Ultimately, it’s something you can (re)invent yourself, however you end up preferring to play. The spreadsheet I posted attempts to minimize your (the player’s) inputs: win a race? Write “1” in the slot and the spreadsheet is designed to award the player a certain amount of credits. It’s all tallied up top as “winnings” and then whatever you’re recording you’ve spent on cars and upgrades is subtracted to give you your final ‘bank’ amount. Don’t like this approach? Just write whatever number you want over my formula in the “payout” column and it will be reflected up top. I’ll warn that this method is comparatively cumbersome (I tried recording exact payouts, originally), you have to spend a lot more time in the spreadsheet and can’t afford to skip through the one screen that shows your exact winnings after each race.

Something that is hard to do in the spreadsheet is capture “repeat winnings,” so if you’re a grinder and do the same event again and again, you need to take added care to continue tallying appropriately. As @Theufcveteran has built a huge number of events into this journey, my recommendation is to avoid replaying things, including accepting the occasional 8th place (etc.) if you’re like me and carry a track limits penalty through the checkered flag when using no-HUD.

The GT7 Custom Race rewards are larger than in previous GT games, so while you could theoretically use your GT7 wallet to play, you’ll probably be sitting on piles of cash for most of the playthrough. I am still fiddling with the balance as I go but right now it is a slightly-early-game-boosted version of GT3’s payouts with a 7.5x multiplier slapped on top, and per-license payouts that are just my own fixed amounts. In the long run, I am trying to optimize the balance between “progression” and “being able to afford cars in GT7’s scaled-up economy.”

As far as your garage management is concerned, you can record your purchases/tuning expenses in the top of the spreadsheet. I am using GT7’s “favorite” concept for having an easily accessible list of my ‘career cars,’ apologies if that means you’ll have to let go of your old favorites! I strongly recommend not ACTUALLY selling cars, rather go find their resale value and add it up in the spreadsheet, and then remove it from your garage “favorites.” I have had fun giving rival drivers souped up and painted versions of cars I’ve “sold,” not to mention you aren’t simply throwing funds away and can continue to tune into Hagerty/etc. in parallel while building your GT7 collection.

A final note on selling cars, when you remove the car from your “spreadsheet garage” you are effectively removing its cost from your “expenses” formula. You’ll want to add the car’s price and that of its upgrades to the “sunk cost” cell, contributing to expenses without actually having the car written into your “garage” cells.

It is up to you. The spreadsheet allows for the tracking of your wallet and garage, as @pritchyTim explains, but if you don’t want to do that, you can use your current GT7 funds and garage for the whole career. Or mix and match if you feel like it, using the spreadsheet wallet and/or garage for one league, and your GT7 wallet and garage for another.
