Thinking of buying a motor-bike. I need advice!!

I can't think of a single cruiser that's going to be anywhere near as fast as a sportbike. Sure, they're pretty quick, but not what you're looking for. You would be disappointed if you got a cruiser...just like you would be disappointed if you got a 250.

You should do fine on a 600cc. I did fine on a 929RR, and I have a friend who is currently 21, and has been riding his 900RR since he was 17. He bought it with zero prior riding experience. He taught himself how to ride, and only laid it over once while trying to impress some girl like a dumbass.

Whatever you do wear the proper gear, be safe, and have fun.

I think my nearly 2 ton car can get close to beating that or beat it :D

it seems like you didnt read my advice. i dont think a 250 is necessary. an early 600 sport bike or gs500 should be fine.

because you said that you dont care too much about going 180mph i suggested some bikes with v-twins. v-twins have very flat torque curves and accelerate well. the gs500 and sv650 also arent cruisers or sportbikes. they are very light and have a more traditional riding position. I think its pretty dumb to be leaning your ass way over to grab the handlebars on a bike you use on the street, when the bike was made to race. its not very practical. there is also an sv650-s that has a half fairing and a more aggresive seating position.

go do a search on them. they are actually pretty sweet.

My mom has agreed to help me buy a nice motor-bike if I promise to always wear ALL of the gear available for bike-riders. One of the things she says I would have to always wear is this thing called an air vest wich inflates once you fall off the bike. I am not sure about that, hopefully I can kind of talk her out of it.

I've seen the commercial for the air vest, and I think it's an exellent thing for beginners. It could potentially save your life.
After you get good on the bike, you can lighten up on what you wear.
Always wear a helmet. In MO, you have to, it's the law. My dad has this First Gear coat that he wears, and it's really good. Gloves are exellent and a must, a single pebble off the road hitting your hand could make you fall. Also wear long pants, jeans are good, to protect against rock hits.

you check out the sv650?

also, once you get more experience at riding you can lighten up, but certain things you should ALWAYS wear.

boots are very important. a shoe would fall off in a wreck in a second and after that the road starts grinding down on your feet/ankles. trust me, Ive seen pictures from the ER of this ****, boots are worth it.

for gear i would say always wear boots, gloves, helmet, leather jacket always. maybe find a set of pants that are stronger than jeans to start with, and then once you comfortable stick with jeans. but i would never wear less than jeans on a bike. road rash is not attractive, or fun i would imagine.

checkout all of the sportbike and motorcycle webpages and forums out there. there are very good forums for beginner, where biker vets always answer noobs' questions.

WTF Mugen?

Advan, some coats out there now are stronger and breath better than leather, like my dad's coat.

yea, the same for pants. they have these gay looking kevlar jeans you can buy. they look kind of fruity, but i suppose they work very well.

gay and fruity...takes one to know one I guess...unless you are talking about "happy" and "colorful".

My dad has the First Gear coat and pants, and he loves them.

The reason I ask if they sell Mugen parts for motorbikes is because I saw a used '98-ish Honda CBR with a "Mugen" sticker on each side if the "fairing" I guess its called. I wondered if they made engine components like pistons and connecting rods or something to enhance engine revs or smoothness. If they don't, they should.

I'm going to look into Mugen parts for bikes. I doubt they make them, but damn it would be cool(not to mention ungodly expensive!),

You're absolutly right about the kind of gear to wear. I own a Honda CR500 and have been riding bikes for around 20 years now. I have done a lot of trail riding and now I've started to dabble in dirt jumping and safety is paramount over everything.

Each time I ride I wear boots, nylons, a jersey, gloves, helmet and goggles. If I'm jumping, I'll also add some body armour and knee pads. Hitting the ground at 80 - 100km/h is no fun at all.

whatever i research i try to gather as much knowledge as possible and try not to gather the noob misconceptions. I havent riden a bike yet (aside from a moped, lol), but am signing up for an msf course this spring and looking for a gs500 there after.

the way car drivers are on the road, riding with them around is very dangerous. I will take as much precautions as possible to save my skin.

Ahhh the good old "what 600 should I get for a first bike thread" :D

Guess my little 250 isnt a match for a 600. :ill:

But then again I do pass 1000cc supersports at trackdays on a regular basis.

What bike you choose is up to you but please, take my advice and get a cheap 250 - you'll live longer.
Or an older "more sluggish than todays 600s" 600 like the Screwsuki Katana I started on... I survived, and it'll give you a little more room than a 250 that needs it tits revved off to go.....

👍 - That's a mighty clean little Priller you've got there... I love to ride 2 strokes, but never got the hang of it (never owned one, only rode a friends RS250....)

As Josh suggested the best would be a 250cc bike. My dad's considering a 2004 Yamaha V-star 650 Classic. I'm planning on getting a Honda CBR600RR when I get my licence. :P

Its weird going from 2 to 4 stroke on a reg basis. Dont have to wory about it ths year thought. The AMA screwed us 250 guys when they dropped 250GP all together. Then they said we could run Formula Extreme all allow us to have up to 330cc, but then as per AMA traditions, they flip-flopped and decided no 2 strokes. So that just leaves me to just run my Gix1K in AMA Supersport. Only time I can play with the Piller is in club racing or trackdays.

Ewww.. Looks like you guys found the sharp end of the poking stick :irked: Sucks... Never had the funding, nor the talent to do anything but TD's, but I'm ok with that.. Don't think I could ever find the balls to go that fast anyway...

BTW.. Ever read, "A twist of the Wrist" by Keith Code ?.... If not, I strongly suggest you pick it up.. Am on my second copy already...

r1? yea a bike with 130hp(even more maybe?) would be great for a beginner with a little experience. I mean he wants to for sure have a bike that can go 190mph instead of a wimpy 175mph. Jeez, what were we thinking suggesting something less. Lets all go buy R1s and kill ourselves!!!!

yea i totally disagree....the r1 is a horrible 1st bike....

only experienced riders can control that bike without killing themselves
