Oh hey another guy wants a new phone and has no idea what to get, that's a first.

Well I do have an idea, sadly since I'm on a budget (unless a miracle from my parents happen), the latest droid flagships are way too expensive (RIP ONE M8 Dreams), however last year's are doable I reckon so here is my question, what do you guys reckon, I haven't yet done extensive research on prices etc but the LG G2 seems like a decent phone with a very good price but as always I need to look at every option first.

So fellow GTPers all help appreciated.

Edit: Poll
Well after looking around and comparing specs, decided on these 4 options in the poll.

The Z1 and M7 will require a stretch in budget so they still aren't a dead cert as an option, the Nexus and G2 are almost the same price, multiple poll choices are optional if you want.

A Nexus 4 that is used is a good option.
Nexus 5 if you can find one new is very good.

Nexus phones are known for having high end hardware at a cheap price.

The LG Nexus 5 is withing budget (very slightly cheaper than a G2), will have a look at it, is it better than a G2?

I still have my Galaxy Nexus (Nexus 3) and I'm VERY happy with it. The only downside to Nexus phones is that they don't have an SD card slot. :(

Other than that they aren't as expensive and are very reliable. I would recommend the 5 as well.

The Nexus five is very interesting indeed, only downside I see to the G2 is the camera, but certainly on the shortlist.
Not much else has a removable SD card(or battery for that matter) but anything 16+ is enough for me.

The following phones I think are good value for money if you want still a Sony phone with reasonable processing power:

Sony Xperia M2
Sony Xperia T2 Ultra
Sony Xperia T3
Sony Xperia Z Ultra
Sony Xperia Z1

the Z1 is still very expensive for some reason, the rest look very good, any ones in particular would you recommend over the G2 and Nexus 5 (Moto X included).

I think that a Nexus 5 or a Moto X should be in your budget and be more than sufficient for your needs :)

I was looking also towards the moto X, will hopefully find a place which sells it though when I begin searching more.

So far gents the Nexus 5, Moto X, G2 will add the Xperias too but if price isn't an issue which of those would you guys recommend. (would prefer the phone to be upgradable to KitKat.

In case you don't know, the Nexus line of phones are designed and manufactured with a close collaboration with Google, which makes them more flexible for modding and less tampered with bloatware from manufacturers / carriers. Android being from Google, they ensure that only good hardware is packed into the phones.

I find it funny how my phone (from 2010) has a newer version of Android than many new phones coming off their retail box today. I have mine rooted with a custom ROM.

The Z Ultra seems at a good price although massive in size and one advantage is that it is waterproof. I personally don't think it is worth spending a lot on an Android phone now as current flagships will look relatively low end in space of a few months so maybe best to wait or get something like M2 for a temporary upgrade.

I will certainly root and be installing custom roms on whatever I get so that's a big positive.

Thing is phones here very expensive so I won't be able to get a flagship anyway. Plus from what I've seen from the specs of the phones you guys mentioned, they're more than good enough.

I would think there is likely a new Nexus type of device will come out although maybe beginning of next year that will have nearly twice the graphics power of say the HTC One M8 and maybe theoretically three to four times the CPU power while also having better battery life.

Given that Android L will have 64-bit support, it is good to get a phone that will take advantage of it. None of the current Android flagship devices do. iPhone 6 has already the latest technology in it for example and is fastest phone on the market while having great battery life with a small capacity battery.

Just to inform would-be buyers, that phone is not water proof, it's water resistant. Big difference, so don't go swimming with it without really knowing what amount of resistance it has to water, what depth and amount of time it can handle.

"Waterproof" is a term loosely used by marketing departments.

I wouldn't also use the ratings, more of some peace of mind that if there is heavy rain or whatever reason a phone falls in some water, it is more likely to survive than phone without such a rating.

It's IP58 rated. Protected from water up to 1.5 meter deep for up to 30 minutes. I have an Xperia Z with the same rating. I have washed it under water a few times and had it submerged for a few minutes. I haven't tested it to the limits it is rated, but am confident of it.s water tightness. I didn't by the phone for that reason, just a peace of mind thing.

And this amusing story.

Out of the phones listed above, my picks would be between the Moto X, the LG G2 or the Xperia Ultra. I am eyeing up the Xperia Ultra myself just purely for the screen size after using a 5inch Xperia Z for the past almost 2 years, but that screen size isn't for everybody.

Current gen Motorola X or an LG G2 would be your best options. The Nexus 5 has horrid battery life, and both of the aforementioned phones are pretty close to stock android anyway. Motorolas are usually pretty well supported in the development community too so rooting and custom roms shouldn't be an issue.

Battery life is an issue for me so will take that in consideration (I had a look at XDA and it seems both phones have very good support).

You could also look at the second-gen Motorola G: http://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_moto_g_(2014)-6647.php

Will check it out 👍

Z1 owner here - would buy again.

I'm a fan of the Xperias and was looking at a Z1 but way too expensive.

And for looking like ass.

I have a HTC One and would highly recommend it.

Yeah most modern phones aren't lookers but I don't mind much, Looking at the M7 but not sure if I can stretch the budget that much.

And for looking like ass.

I'm surprised to see a comment like this in this day and age... what's there to look at in today's phone? They're mostly a black screen and most people get a protective case, covering almost every part that's not the screen.

And for looking like ass.

Srsly?

The One M7 is a brilliant bit of kit, and the One X will be even cheaper but will still perform very well.

Yeah I'll try to stretch the budget if it's noticably better than the N5 G2 Moto X.

I have another question, with the whole non removable batteries, what happens when a phone freezes?

If android gets screwed up it tends to auto-reboot. But if you somehow got a freeze that didn't do that, you'd hold the power button down to turn off. If that didn't work... which I've never even heard of before... then I guess you'd wait until the battery died.

My X10 lately will freeze that the only way to reboot is to remove the battery  , thanks for the answer Danoff, good to know.
