Got in to the 1:01s... just by a thousandth.

This time trial has been frustrating, but very rewarding.

I think it would have been a more enjoyable experience had the bollards invalidated your lap because you would need to be more precise at getting your way around instead of just yeeting it full send and hoping for the best.

I very rarely drive Gr.4 cars - are they all meant to have so much grip (even on RH) but awkward to drive? The 4C does feel better than the Lancer EVO Gr.4 at Deep Forest a few months ago but I just don't have any confidence on the front-end grip - whether the car will make the corner with meters to spare or simply understeer off to 75th Street near by. Not to add I feel terribly slow in the chicane too where top guys are able to throw the car in and I kept building new sand castles in the infield.

Nevertheless, here is the (slow) lap that I managed.

Willow is just such a track that you have to know every inch of, if you nail your lines it flows like a toilet visit with a phantom turd....smooth and silky 🤣
But you loose somuch time if you are slightly off the ideal line, and no going wide due to the tiny curbs, very technical track! and quite a nice combo

Found a little time, my best S3 split this morning was a .622 , pb lap was .722 so still a tenth out there.

Uploaded replay under #Willow4C if someone in my list wants to follow 🫡

1:17.313 for now with the little Italian bastard.

@Metalgear9493 What a fantastically economical lap! That was beautiful and I’m really glad I was able to watch that.

Thank you for sharing it 😃🎉

Interesting description, 'economical' 🤣.

Not satisfied with being 1.3 tenths off P1 though. I think sand usage exiting the final corner could be the fastest way. It would allow you to carry more corner speed by widening the exit, and with the most recent physics update, leaving the track doesn't penalize you as much in terms of speed loss.

I think that's why P1 hid his replay.

My lap employed weak ABS.

So what was the advice about never giving up? I’m glad I took that advice and I went at Lake Louise again. Finally got gold and hopefully this one will stick.

I also contend, having tried with a personal car and a rental car that the rental cars are indeed faster. I’m easily .3 to .4 of a second consistently faster with the rental than I am with the personal car. Yes I can drive the personal car as fast as the rental but it just doesn’t feel as planted or secure. The rental is easier to get around the corners.

It’s also real interesting seeing how ones ghost compares to the world‘s record fastest ghost. Or at least the fastest ghost there is… #2 I think.
Nice clean lap there and congrats on the gold time 👌

I refuse to believe that the rental is faster, it might just be placebo. Your video says otherwise though. I will try with a rental the next time I have a go at it.

Small improvement on Lake Louise.
Happy Easter holidays whoever celebrate!

That's a fantastic video. I may try Cockpit as well. Using the pad "normally" with the steering lag or rather smoothing it has helped me in the past because I could see how far the wheel was actually turned. But it is also more difficult to judge where my car is using it.

Motion steering in general looks pretty interesting too. I might give it a go if even just for fun.

Are you always in cockpit view?

I am never in cockpit view, bumper 100% for me. This was just for the video, since viewer can watch both controller and steering wheel inside car at same time.

Ok guys, something is going on here at Lake Louise... I think there may be a "glitch" happening!

...

I was losing my mind! Looking here at the times (I know we're pretty quick here, but I'm usually somewhere in the pack) everyone was making good progress, and then looking at replays I'm watching people enter the final turn on the limiter, and exit the final turn at close to 80mph while my car is bogging, barely able to top out fourth, and scratch out 70mph on exit if I'm lucky.

The Corolla I've been using was bought on release day and only ever had suspension and wheels put on it, but I thought what the hell, let me try another one. What can it hurt?

So I went and bought a bone stock GR, put some ice tires on it, and off I went.

TWO laps in beat my PB, TEN laps in I'm in the 1:01s, less than 20 and I landed at a 1:01.869. Average laps fell by over a second even with huge imperfections.

The stock Corolla doesn't bog, is better on the brakes, turns in more eagerly and is just all around better to drive. I have no idea what's going on here, but I went back and tried the "old" Corolla and sure enough, I can't match the pace of the new one.

Oil is good, and the only thing unique about it is the suspension and wheels.

I don't know what's up, but if you're like me and were struggling with this one, go buy a new one and give it a shot. Modified ones may be funky when they're "balanced" for the TT.

Now I'm finally running with the big dogs again, and only have myself to blame my times! I have invalidated numerous .4s and .5s and theres more in me... but for now, I'm tired, and I'm going to bed.

Now, everyone go buy stock Corollas... and happy lapping!

EDIT: I forgot about rentals, haha. Save your money and just rent one!

Hi guys,

I know you’re all under the sun of Willow Springs.

For those of you who are working hard on the Lake Louise flakes, @LSFDRX is absolutely right. Thank you for your post !

There was something really weird with my Morizo (suspensions auto-detuned for Time Trial).

I’m not a top driver, but I’m starting to have the basics to hang the gold at each TT and my reasonable goal is to regularly drop to +2% of the WR (+1% to 1.5% except alien anomaly).

Here, impossible to go below +3.81% (so in silver), to follow the line of a ghost... with an important number of turns (I would say 2 times more than usual) I started to get crazy !

I followed your advice... 3800 places won after 5 laps = -0.850 seconds with an opti at -1.3 second. 0.5 seconds faster than my previous optimal that I never met with my Morizo "detuned".

@Gogga I guarantee you it’s not a placebo effect !

I repeat, I am not an alien but I clearly feel the difference in behavior:
  • traction is better at the exit of T1,
  • I catch the apex more easily,
  • the oversteer is less marked,
  • the Toy no longer flies off on the Esse's bump,
  • I gain 10 km/h at the exit of the last turn,
  • I gain 5 km/h in the next straight (mark at the last bump before the descent).

After I decided to be a scam on the snow, I relearn everything from the beginning.

Thank you, man.

PS : I posted my two replays on GT, personal car versus rental car.

Hey guys,

my PS5 is still not within reach until Monday so unfortunately I can't join in on the action at Willow Springs just yet even though I'd really love to. I do have my notebook with me however so at least I can dabble a bit with the plug-ins. Specifically I am working on a "sneak preview" feature for the statistics plug-in (the one that runs on gran-turismo.com) that lets everyone get a glimpse of upcoming time trials as soon as their data is being uploaded by PD. As stated previously, this is sometimes (very rarely) weeks in advance, but often at least a few hours to a day before the event starts. This is what it is going to look like:

I hope to have it ready in time for the next event. Stay tuned :)

I didn’t believe it either but I’ve now done way too many laps of this course. I didn’t do measurements, but I am certain that my average lap for a personal car is in the low 1:03s, often having sessions where I didn’t even get into the 1:02s. Whereas, with the rental, I am typically running mid 1:02s with the occasional bad lap in the 1:03s.

Good fast laps on both are low 1:02 but again the rental is just more consistently reliable when it comes to track performance.

Hey all - very busy week of work and traveling around the country at odd hours meant that I hadn't had the chance to look at the PS5 since last Sunday. Interesting insights into the rental car phenomenon. Gave it a try... four tenths quicker inside of 20 miles . Made no sense though, as really the only difference physically was the wheels. Went back to my own car, swapped the wheels to standard and matched the rental car pace. Only conclusion is that there is some modeling bug (or real difference) on wheel offset. Regardless, continued to make progress and am now consistently 0.4-0.5 faster in sector one than I was last weekend, and have ended up 1.2 seconds faster than my previous best. Gold is now in sight - ATTACK!

Awesome! I'm glad to help! Now I just want to know what the actual issue is. I think it has to be down to wheel selection as that should be the only variable between the two, but with a game this complicated it could be anything!
The current puzzle I'm trying to solve at Lake Louise is every time I go sub-28.5 for the first sector, I immediately lose it through the Esses. It's like I haven't figured out how to carry the momentum from a banging S1. Shame, cause I've seen an S1 as low as in the 28.2s.
I often fall victim to this too. A killer first corner means an earlier upshift to 5th and more speed carried into the esses which then carries me too far out in the first left and destroys the setup for the following right and left. It's why my optimals are so much better than my actuals!

Can't wait to get back in there and clean things up!

Little progression 😁🤣

"Little progression", haha. Insanely fast! Awesome improvement.

Yes - quick testing from my side this morning, but it certainly seems related to wheel selection on this car and track
