Cheers for all the help, folks. As I sensed yesterday, something was clearly amiss and in the end I fortunately managed to figure out what, the issue were my wheels. Something I had ruled out earlier since all I had done was switch to a different set, no change in size, width or offset (the culprit earlier, with e.g. the RCR Civic).
When I was driving tonight and seeing no improvements I figure there is certainly something that is messed up, yet I (and some other friends) checked all possible explanations (or so we thought) and still no success. What the hell can I do?! Suddenly the idea comes to me, how about going back to the standard wheels? Said and done, back to driving, same lines, same style yet now somehow it just grips more and I manage to follow the ghost in a way previously impossible. In just a couple of minutes I'm clearly sub 01 and the final puzzle piece falls into place.
sighs of relief
That also explains how people were led to believe the rental was faster (which it was, if your Corolla had aftermarket wheels) and at the same time people were setting top times in their own Corollas with liveries (as long as OEM wheels stayed on).
This was the reason, as already explained by
@imChris (mad time btw, respect!)
@linksracer Make sure that you have OEM wheels in case you feel strangely far behind here. Shooter can definitely snipe this one but I'd wager by no more than half of or max a tenth.
