After Kimi's SPECTACULAR retirement in the european GP, do you think it is too late for anyone to catch Alonso?

I know people think its too early to say but the reason i am saying it is because renault are consistent this year if you ignore their tyre problem. Sure Kimi and mclaren will pull off some amazing wins this year but they also have quite a bit of bad luck this year too.

There are still plenty of races left.

All it needs is alonso to stumble into a slightly bad patch, outside podium, and raikonnen to get a few good victories in and it's game on again.

I think that Kimi still has a good chance to catch up with Fernando. As EE said, there are still plenty of races left and Alonso needs to retire once or twice and his lead will be gone.Kimi would have to win or atleast finish on the podium for the remaining 12 races if he's to take 1st place from Fernando.

Neither Kimi or Alonso can afford any retirements right now. Currently, the only person who can challenge and defeat Alonso in terms of speed is Raikonnen. Kimi just needs to continue to eat away at Alonso's lead, and hope his so far perfect reliability will come to an end. It's gonna be close once we head to China for the finale.

That being said, I'm rooting for Alonso.

theres over 10 races to go, theres no way on earth you could say its a done deal too alonso.

as far as im concerned even nick heidfeld still has a chance, id say its too far for webber and he doesnt have the consistency but it is not over yet, oooo no, specially after heidfelds performance at the nurburgring, i wouldnt hold my breath

There's 12 (including this upcoming Canadian GP) races left. That's 120 points possible.
Assuming Kimi fishes 1st in 11 races, he'll end up with 137 points. If Alonos were to come in 2nd in those 11 races, he'd have 147. So that's 137 Kimi and 147 Alonso BEFORE the final race in China. What would happen in the event of a tie? Unlikely... but Alonso would surely win in this situation. He can finish 8th with his eyes closed!

Now... if the McLaren boys were to miraculously pull of 11 consecutive 1 - 2 finishes, Kimi would win the Championship even before China. He'd have 137 points, and even if Alonso managed to bag 3rd place in those 11 races, he'd still only have 125 points.

I'm predicting Alonso will win the Championship. Him and Kimi are in a class all their own this season. I don't think any of the other drivers will really catch up to their pace.

Heidfeld? No way. His best bet is to finish in the top 5. He'll give a good run to the rest of the field. And Webber? Noooooooooooooooooooooo way.

But the point im trying to make is you cant decide using maths because it will never work out like that, the winner will be the most consistent driver which WILL be Alonso even though my first and only team is mclaren, you have to think realisticly and realisticly, Alonso will win.

The season is not over yet, it will be close, and I unfortunatly think Alonso will win, but we will have a real fight to the finish, especially if Alonso has a couple of retirements.

Kimi Raikonen gonna win the world title because he is very constant and he doesn't eat his rear tyres up like stupid Fernando Alonso and his Renault GO KIMI GO GO GO GO

Yea, if its a close season there will be a lot of news coverage which will be very good for F1 after the damage Shumi caused (not that i dont like Shumi, hes a great driver)

Who in your opinion deserves to be the World Champion a.k.a the fastest man on the planet(lap time wise)?I think it's Kimi's turn to reign. He would have been champion had Illmore built a descent engine for him.One that doesn't blow up constantly.I'm referring to last season btw.

Montoya need to get his act together and help fend Alonso off.

kimi is very fast on lap times but i think alonso is a little more consistent, this next race will see if heidfeld can be consistent in high finishes..

Its still early. Mathematically, alonso has a better chance. But i still voted tat kimi could catch up cus he probably will.

I'm still rooting for Kimi and i've been a kimi fan ever since he got to mclaren. I hope kimi wins

Consistency seems to be more important than speed. Unfortunately, kimi is the faster one but alonso is more consistent. But the thing is, its not kimi that has been inconsistent, its the car tahts unreliable.

But I don't see Alonso retiring from a lot of races. Even if Kimi gets first, Alonso will be close behind him. First place is 10 points, and second is 8. If Alonso doesn't come in first, he'll be in second or third. Seriously, I don't see how Alonso can't win the championship.

Kimi is the faster of the two, McLaren has the fast car of the two, but Renault has a very reliable and fast package, and I don't see the reliability suddenly going downhill, so unless Alonso has some unforced retirements I don't see him going many rounds without scoring points.

Of course Alonso is in a very comfortable situation. But things can change fast. I think it will depend on how many cars will be able to fight for victory in the next races.

If the Williams and Ferraris manage to improve (which is possible, especially for Ferrari who just needs to make the tires work better), they could play a role in the battle between Alonso and Kimi.
The advantage of Fernando is that even if Kimi is faster by far, he still can secure 2nd or 3rd place. Now imagine that the Ferrari suddenly become faster than the Renaults, but not faster than the Mac Laren. That could help Kimi.
On the other side, the Ferrari could also win the race instead of kimi, helping Alonso.
So I think that there are several possible endings to this story. JPM has also a role to play, but at the moment he didn't, having several issues that took him out of the lead group.

We also have to notice that for the moment, Alonso had 100% of chance with him. His last race could have been ruined at the 1st corner (when he was hit by Ralf), but he finally won. In monaco his tires were ready to blow, but they lasted long enough. On the other side, kimi was very unlucky. Now, what next if the chance decide to choose another guy ? What next if Renault's reliabilty issues start to affect Alonso instead of Fisico each time ?

I remember Michael in 2000, he had a 30pts margin over Mika after the Canada. Everybody said it was over. Then he crashed Twice, had a failure, and his lead was blown away after Hungary. Then he lost the lead in Belgium. And he finally won the last 4 races, after several people said it was over for him.

Everything's still possible, but of course, it's better to be in Alonso's place right now.

Yea, Renault have got a very reliable package so Alonso will only finish a few places behind Kimi unless he retires then Alonso will really pull ahead.

Kimi and Alonso are in a leauge of their own.

raikkonen and heidfeld are on the same points, both on 27, i beleive heidfeld can make something of this, i think he still has a chance for second place over kimi

er i think kimi will catch up but he will drag hiefeld with him and it will become a 3 way fight, the renault aint perfect (as we saw in monaco) and yes mclaren can make some stupid decitions (really should have brought kimi and kept him in the points...) but hiedfeld he just been amazingly amazing in the williams.... his pole was totally unexpected at nurbergring and i reckon he will win a couple of races not before long.... especially at the nxt 2.... both fast tracks and the williams has the fastest engine.... u never know....

As for who is gonna get it.... thts alonso... by one point lol

Nick is on 25 points, it's Trulli who is on 27 points with Kimi. No offence but I think Nick has no real chance of the title, it's a two horse fight and I think it will stay that way.

I somehow think Alonso is going to have a harder time as the season goes on, but I don't know if it will be enough for Kimi to bridge the gap, I hope so though.

It looks pretty much over to me at this point. Alonso just has to finish consistently, and even with small points he still can coast easily to victory.

oh yeah, its trulli isnt it, my bad, lol

i thbink your right on alonso having the harder time but as someone said mclaren make some odd decisions, whats too say that we wont retire a few more times, i think if trulli can hold his pace then he can come 2nd if mclaren keep going like this.

Well Trulli is the real dark horse if Toyota can get back their start-of-year pace. But somehow I don't think that's likely.

What. Heidfeld got an impressive 2nd place (twice) and now everyone thinks he's the real deal and gonna do well?? Not this season, were not gonna see him as a contender.

If you ask me, i just think he was at the right place at the right time.
