Very nice!

The car has kept my interest for a while, but I've never had the opportunity to drive one. Certainly a step-up from the MKIII Jetta!

(I can't believe I just said that...)

Thats my kind of car! Mean looks and and over all nicely tuned car. Does it have the paddle shifters?
Stick shifter. I believe the paddle shifter only comes with the CVT version of the automatic or something like that.

There's one of those that lives across the street from my dorm. I must say that it looks like a pretty sweet car. Good purchase.👍

Any plans for mods in the near future?
No mods soon, but maybe later next year. Right now I don't really have any money. What I plan to do at some point is put in something like a sparco sport seat, get a better ECU chip (assuming I can find one), and some other horsepower mod like fuel intake or something. Maybe some sort of turbo to bring power to like 220-ish horsepower, but I'd have to look at how much that would increase my insurance. I also want at some point to paint the rims in a matte black.

A bit of an update. I believe I've gotten ~13,500kms on the car so far. Need to check the odometer again. Been getting good gas mileage. No problems with the car so far. I do however need to get winter tyres for this upcoming season. I'm thinking Continental winter tyres, I read a good review about them somewhere.

Anyway, I took the car to the local race track today and had a blast. There were 5 other people for this organized advanced driving course-style thing, and we did some slalom tests, heel-toe braking and a lot of lapping and we had a 45 minute open lapping session as well with 2 pit stops for engine and brake cooldown.

The other cars there were a BMW 650i, a Caddy CTS-V, Porsche 997 Carrera S, '98 BMW 540i with a bunch of mods (shocks, brakes, tyres, sport seats), and an S2000 that had a hardtop on.

Basically the track had 1 main front straight that was pretty long and that was the designated pass zone. The rest was a mix of slow and high-speed corners. I was able to outrun everyone except the Porsche on the corners (I would beat the 540i and 650i by maybe a second or two or so through the corners. On the straight they'd smoke me, but not too bad. I was hitting 190km/h (6400rpm in 4th gear) at the end of the straight.

At the end of the day, I did OK on the track in the Lancer. I also passed the S2000 twice on the straight and was much better in corners than him (that driver was being much more cautious in corners than I was).

It physically stuns me how attractive that vehicle is.

Wow, you must be joking. It looks a lot better in front than the Evo X, but the shoulder line is wayyyyy too high, and the whole greenhouse/rear deck/back bumper area looks like it's been pinched shut. Like I said in the Evo thread, it looks constipated or anal retentive. The overall proportions of this car are horrid. It looks like a wide-angle photo of itself even when you're looking at it in real life.

You know, Duke, it's been nine months since I made that comment and looking back on it today it still stuns me how attractive that vehicle is. Truly the best-looking small car in my lifetime - especially when its rivals are all so either ugly (Impreza, blobish Mazda 3 sedan) or flat boring (Cobalt, Corolla). The Civic is cool but not in the same way.

Glad you had fun at the track, MustangSVT!

Here are a few pictures of a slalom test:

Wow, looks like you had fun! I never realized the new Lancers handled that well. Beating the Bimmers is no small feat.

Congrats on the new ride. Yes those Lancers are very impressive on road tracks and pretty much an excellent vehicle all around. Especially the Evos.

The secret is it's not an Evo. ;)

Did anybody run over the cones?

Nope didn't run over any cone (which is surprising to be honest, it did feel at one point like I did).

We also had cones on the whole track to signify turn-in point, braking points, apex (also helping with vision as to where you should looking towards). When I had the BMW 540i in front of me, he took out one of the cones at one of the faster chicanes, his tail just came out just a little bit and ran over it. The guy in the CTS-V nearly ran over the cones during the slalom test too (he said he had TC off to make it more enjoyable, but he also said it was pretty scary to put all the power down, I think it makes like 400 ftlbs of torque or something crazy like that).

Drove my car to the airport yesterday to pick up my folks and I managed to get rougly 40mpg (5.8L/100km) for my whole trip.

It involved a whole lotta coasting, hitting majority of green lights, not too much traffic, and like I said, a lotta coasting. Probably not gonna happen again for a fair while.

On the other hand, I managed 6.8L/100km this morning to work in traffic so that was pretty good.

Hello MustangSVT!

WOW, I am amazed. The car looks great (even when I am not a fan of white cars) and your fuel usage is very impressive.
5.8 to 6.8l I managed with my 1.3l Mitsubishi Colt... With my BMW 325i I am managing in average 8.2l/100km.

I wish you a lot of fun and a great time with your Lancer.

Thank you for the kind comments. My route away from my house usually has a few hills that I can coast on and maintain the speed of travel. So usually when going to work in morning rush hour, I will get like 7.8%, but on the way back home (due to heavier traffic as well), I will only get like 8.8-9.3%.

That's really impressive, the fuel numbers for the Lancer seem quite good and you aren't the only person who reports it either.

You are welcome!
Interesting. May I ask how much kms you are driving on one trip? (For Example to work / school / university)
I drive 17kms to my job. In this direction I don´t have to go much uphill / downhill on that way.
Have a great weekend!

Gotta agree with that, considering dumping my Diamante as the beater for an older Lancer, given that the Evo (ignoring the price differential between 91 and 98 octane here) is more economical than the Diamante, and significantly more frugal that my old Legacy. And I don't nanny the Evo around all the time either.

I usually drive 12km to work.

And no it wasn't at Shannonville. I wish I lived near a track like Shannonville.

Anyway, I was at the track again yesterday for a 4 hour lapping session.Used up nearly the whole tank of gas.

There were some really fast cars there this time around unlike the previous time:

Porsche 997 Turbo
Aston Martin DB9
Ford Mustang SVT Cobra w/ 580whp
Chevrolet Corvette C6 Z06
Caddy CTS-V (same one as last time)
Subaru Legacy SpecB
+ some boxster, cayman and don't remember the other 1 or 2 more cars

So I had the slowest car there by quite a bit. That being said I didn't do too bad. I was being passed on the straight (designated pass zone) by most guys that would catch up, but I was able to keep up with the mustang and with the CTS-V around the track, just not the straight. It was hopeless to try to keep up with the 997 Turbo or Z06 or DB9 anywhere on the track, so I just payed attention to my own driving and looking ahead and driving the optimum line and all that rather than trying to keep up with everyone else.

In our last session, I think the Corvette guy must've taken it really easy. I was the first to come out on the track, and at the end of the lap, I was a fair bit down the straight when I saw Corvette coming onto the straight in my rear view mirrors. I was expecting him to be on my tail come next lap, but on the next following laps, I was actually increasing my time over him by about a second or so with each lap so he didn't catch up to me at all. My guess is he must've taken it a lot slower than usual because a 505HP beast would just trump over my 4 banger.

Anyway, had a lot of fun, got to know and feel my car better than last time and feel a bit more knowledgeable now. This car really needs heel toe when braking hard, so I need to practice that more.

Unfortunately there will be no pictures this time around.

Thanks for the Infos and the story!
It sounds like you had a lot of fun again.
May I ask how much a "trackday" cost at your end?
Greetings
the Kutscher
