Ever since the open beta/demo version was released, Dragon Trail Seaside has been my all-time new favorite when it comes to Polyphony Digital's original circuits. It captures the spirit of Gran Turismo in and out, with its picturesque scenery in the background to gaze at, and simple-but-complex layout to learn. The course seems simple at first, but after enough laps, you realize that the esses and the bus stop section near the seaside itself require perfect entry points to get the best speed out of each corner, and once you nail every entry point on the fine-tipped head, it feels incredibly satisfying. Seaside is one of the most-satisfying courses to nail a fast lap on; the flow is just amazing. I wish I could say the same for the Reverse layout of the course; that's a headache to drive on compared to the Forwards layout. Even if it was intended from the beginning, I'm glad that Dragon Trail Seaside was one of the first courses that everyone got to play, as it allowed me to fall in love with it after driving so many laps on.
Even though the rally aspect of the game gets a lot of flak, that doesn't mean it isn't fun, and to go with it, Sardegna is a really fun and fast-paced rally course that allows you to throw your car around at high speeds while having a great flow. Both the Forwards and Reverse layouts are fun, but I really do enjoy the Reverse layout so much more, as the very first corners of the course have a jump that allows you to point your car in the direction of the road ahead of time, tackle the jump, and then powerslide onwards while trailing so close to the barrier- it looks so awesome when pulled off and even when viewed during a replay. I wish I could find the words to describe how satisfying it is to pull off. In general, it's all about deeply attacking the corners in this course, all done at high speeds, which makes it incredibly fun despite the game's questionable rally physics. I've easily done over 200 laps on this course alone.
Kyoto Driving Park - Miyabi also gets a vote from me, as it's an incredibly simple and basic course, but yet again, it requires a perfect driving line to get the most speed out of your performance. Turns 2-4 are quite formidable to the inexperienced driver. It makes racing in slow vehicles like the Fiat 500 a rather exciting competition rather than just a drive in the park, so to speak. Anyone who's raced tuned Fiat 500s and racing karts on this course knows where I'm coming from.
Another rally course gets another vote from me, you say? Heresy!? I think not! I would nominate Fisherman's Ranch as another favorite of mine. Again, the game's rally physics are questionable to some, but once you learn how to handle them, this course is a true test of your mettle. The flow is difficult but also pretty good once you get it down, especially the second half of the course in the Forwards layout right after you tackle the incredibly tight hairpin turns. The jumps and the wide stretches of the road allow you to throw your car around with joy, but it doesn't allow you to relax unlike the other two rally courses. On top of the flow of the course, I'm a huge fan of its design; it reminds me so much of the Grand Canyon course from Gran Turismo 4; it's almost like a successor to it, spiritually of course. The Ford F-150 SVT Raptor is the best vehicle to saddle up for in this ranch; I've driven countless laps with it and it's a real rodeo to throw it around at speed and catch some serious airtime with the jumps.
