I thought the M3 was supposed to be returning to the I6 with a tri-turbo? Or was that just the usual rumer mill?

If this is true then, along with the tri turbo rumors, there might be hope to get a Supra. Heres to crossing you fingers and hoping

Maybe, but last I heard they were supposed to be ditching I6.
The tri turbo is their diesel thing, isn't it?

The CEO of Toyota is putting Toyota into a midlife crisis now.

And I approve.

Let's see what this partnership produces.

Would be delightful if Toyota came out with a rebadged beemer and called it the Kroney.

Im surprised by this, Toyota has already played their hand with Subaru and now they are doing the same with BMW?
Why wouldn't BMW recognize Toyota as a user who will learn what they can and after the relationship ends, use the knowledge as a competitor?
Obviously BMW isn't worried about Toyota as a competitor. However, at Toyota they idolize BMW as a true sporting car manufacturer and competitor in the open market.

I'm sure w/e they come up with in this project will simply be a stepping stone for Toyota as they try to re-claim some kind of lost sporting spirit. So far it seems to be working (enter GT86 smiley).

New talk from a BMW spokeswoman http://carscoop.blogspot.com/2012/07/bmw-rep-says-toyota-sports-car-will.html

Article Snip
(Speaking to Autonews, she said that unlike the Subaru BRZ, Scion FR-S and Toyota 86 / GT86 coupes, the sports cars that will evolve from the BMW-Toyota partnership will "not be identical or share a common exterior design".

The spokesperson added that BMW's model "will be a sustainable sports car with environmentally friendly technology," and that "We [BMW] are developing the architecture and components for this future car.")

So they will be collaborating on a new vehicle it seems. Also from a little bit of searching around elsewhere it seems BMW was interested in Toyota's hybrid technology and their partnership with GM (which was for hybrid tech) has ended, BMW is said to be returning the favor by sharing their carbon fiber techniques which are among the top in the world right now and also aiding Toyota in it's struggle that has been keeping it's sports car lineup's alive.

I have heard (in some car mag in the work breakroom) BMW is interested in Toyota's hybrid tech. That's fairly interesting to me as many of the rumors about the Supra MKV is that it will be a sports hybrid. And if Toyota is looking to gain more knowledge about carbon fiber, they stand a good chance at leading the CF front, with their ultra accurate loom they built for the LFA. Let us hope we can get another golden age of Toyota sports cars. And that this one (if it ever actually comes) is badged as a Toyota and not a Scion here in the states.

A sports car with carbon fiber and hybrid drivetrain from the factory will be too expensive for a Scion badge. It will most likely be either Toyota or Lexus, but I'm betting Lexus.

Point well made there. I have heard rumors of Lexus wanting to make a new super/hyper car over at toyotanation

Lexus is certainly becoming geared toward the upper echelon of sports cars as well, especially with the IS-F and LF-A and F-Sport stuff.

The new CEO got bored with the image of Toyota and decided to make sports cars again.

Thank God.
