Triple screen size

Hi, I'm investing in a new PC and it will be a triple screen set up. I've finished my list of parts but the only thing I'm struggling on is how big a screen to get. The gpu I'm getting will be ok for triples (GTX 780) and I already have a 23" Samsung with DVI / HDMI which has stood me well for a couple of years.

I'm torn between getting 3 x 27" Monitors for about £210 each or do I get 3 x 23" ones for £135 each and save the rest of the money or even just get 2 more 23" ones to add to my existing Samsung one and use the money to improve the PC?

I've seen that the majority have 22"/23"/24" set ups so will that be enough to maintain the immersion or is 27+ the way to go now? I know about the 1080 / 1440p debate and I'm ok with 1080p at that size, I'm just curious as to what you think is better: Bigger screens and sacrifice a little bit of Performance over budget or get smaller ones and use the saved cash to improve the PC?

Thanks!

The bigger the better, too a point. It depends on how much room you have and how close you will be from the monitors. I'm running three 27" at 5812 x 1080 (GTX 780 OC) and sit approximately 38" from the center display, anything smaller at this distance would not be ideal. Too me, I wouldn't cut corners on your flat panels as they are the greatest contributor to the immersion level.
Note, regarding performance, running 1080p on a 32" is the same as 1080p on a 19".

On triple 24s and can safely say its awesome.I though about 27s but it would be too big I think.

Im only around a foot from the screen and have close to a 180 wrap so all isee is screens.

Yeah looking forward (or should that be forwards and sidewards?!) to getting it all set up. I think I'll go for 3 x 23" I've seen which saves me £380 over the 27"s I've also seen so gives me more to spend on other parts. Having mocked up the sizes out of some card and sat down in front of them the smaller sizes were still a good size and could 'see' plenty of screen estate from my seat.

Yeah, still now after a few months I still go a bit blurry eyed when concentrating on stuff on windows desktop or trying to focus on something particular!

Regards the 780, im running a single GTX770 Asus and racking 84fps constant on iracing so you'll be fine there

Just make sure that your eye level is centre also, there's a good iracing based vid explaining this by a guy from the US.

With the profile rig I use its easy to adjust the screens and I can fold them out for a flatter work area when needed. Jump in, youll love it!

I was torn between triple 24 and triple 27.

I ended up choosing 24s because I didn't have the room for 27s.

As it turns out, I'm happy I did. The 24s are certainly big enough and as long as they are positioned correctly, I don't see any reason you'd need 27.

I have the room for 27" and the budget but doing some research it's a lot more to pay for only a little bit more screen. Plus it does seem the vast majority are happy with 23/24 sizes so I think I'm happy to go with that, also as JerseyDriverSS states the virtual screen seems to be mainstream imminently so I'd be happy with 3 x 23" for now and see what comes out of Oculus or even Sonys Project Morpheus.

TheORDL my eye level is pretty level now, I've repurposed an Ikea set of drawers to go over my Playseat and will be able to mount the triples on it with adjustable arms. Getting the right angles will be a priority, I've seen many set ups where it just looked wrong (screens too high or not angled enough etc), kills the immersion if it's not done right.

Im not sure what monitors your looking at, but my suggestion would be to go with 120hz monitors with the extra money. There is big difference in the visuals. Even if it means smaller monitors its worth the trade off.

I went from triple 24" to 27" and I can say 27" is better. 24" is fine though. I would advise go with what your budget permits and wait for what Oculus may bring.

I've got three 23" Dell Ultrasharps, I haven't found myself wanting anything bigger. I'll be investigating the Rift but I expect I'll keep my monitors either way, and I really doubt I'll be upgrading them until they die.

Stay single for a while and hold out for oculus rift. That's my plan at least.
That's what I would do too. I'm getting ready to sell my triple screen setup Once the the rift arrives in July I'll be trying to find someone to buy my 3 monitors and stand. I've got my PC hooked up to triple screens for my racing and a hdmi switch that goes to a plasma tv for shooters and pretty much all other games. Once the rift comes I won't need the triples anymore.

After using the DK1 at a friends I'm sure the DK2 will be much better than triple screens. And once the consumer version releases I can't imagine there ever being a reason to need triples for racing again.

For sure VR headset will be awesome, however it seems 2015 (prob late 2015) before we can buy one in the stores so I'm ok with the triple screens for now, still better than 1 I've got now. Will absolutely go VR once it's mainstream though.

@fatkrakr I've looked at 120Hz ones but there is a big jump in price from the 60Hz ones. My dad has a high Hz Sony TV for his GT6 rig (although he has no idea what 120Hz is or does probably, it was in the sale) and it is smooth but it's hard to find one that is reasonably priced (No more than £650 for all 3) so a bit stuck on that front.

It all depends how close you are to the screens. How far are your eyes from the screens when in racing position?

By the way, you can run multiple refresh rates with SoftTH. So you can have a 120Hz/144Hz center and 60Hz sides. I ran like this for a few months and it worked really well. A poor man's 120Hz setup. Now my center is running G-Sync and I've upgraded the sides to 144Hz. Now I'm in display heaven.

I'm pretty close, currently my 23 sits as far back as my G27 case goes. I like to have some portion of my wheel over the screen otherwise it feels dis-connected.

Still can't decide what to get though. Higher spec 23's or entry level 27's. Will be buying on weds so I need to decide quick!

I have three 27" monitors and fined that the in car dash board extends onto the side monitors. Has anyone tried a 32" for the centre monitor or will eyefinity not work across different size monitors?

Eyefinity does work with different size monitors. I have a 46" 55" 46" setup and eyefinity works fine.

However if the size of the side screens does not match the size of the center screen, the display will not line up.

You can only solve this if you have a zoom function in the side screens which allows you to match the picture size AND position in order to get perfect alignment.

The size of the monitor does not control or affect what will display on center or side monitors - adjust FOV.

I run three 55" projection panels and have to say its almost a 1:1 with a real cockpit. Of course you have to adjust the FOV in game but I have it so its pretty damn close to a 1:1.

Regardless of screen size or the number of screens, if your using the correct FOV it should be 1:1. You might not be able to see much while driving with the correct FOV on a 19" screen sitting 3' away, but what is on the screen should be 1:1. Some games make it difficult to impossible to set the correct FOV, but that's another topic.

Agreed Fat, I was just saying that if you run larger panels its easier to get the correct FOV and 1:1 as the adjustment possibilities are just greater.
