Tureno Sprinter...a few questions

I have been playing this game since i was 3, i am now....well, old enough to be your father.

The Tureno Sprinter is a mystery to me. Its ugly, old, slow, has all the finesse and control of a silicon tit-job but people love it. Why?

There is a cult of some sort surronding this rust bucket...whats the big deal? Where did this phenomenon start and whats it all about?

I dont feel that i am missing out on a life changing experience, i am just intrigued.

The car is famous mainly thanks to the anime series Initial D, a Japanese series about drifting. The car is driven by one of the main characters.

If (when) you get your hands on the SS edition in the game, you'll find that it's quite a decent race car too. It's just the version used in the anime.

Give the car a chance, tune it and race it. Thanks to its low weight it can be surprisingly competitive on twisty tracks. You can also try to drift it if you want to try to get a feeling why it has the magical aura it has. For me it has always worked better as a racer though. :)

I agree with the Initial D explanation. But it also has to do with just real life. They are huge for drifting in real life. One because of price, two just because they are light and RWD. Another one is the 240's.I love the S13's.I have been trying to get my hands on one for years. Or i would settle for a RX-7.My friend had one that we swapped in a SBC.Fun car.:)

I have heard of the cartoon but never watched it...

i have had the two cars in my garage for...oh, about 4 years?..

never really been a drifing fan because i prefer to actually win races.

anyway, cheers for the replys...

As far as driving Truenos in the game, they're definitely one of the more challenging rides to master, even with their low power. Early on, a 1.5 differential and sports or semi-racing chassis works wonders. Later on, more severe parts will be needed unless you're more of an experienced driver.

Yer, but Takumi Fujiwara and his AE86 in Initial D was perhaps the biggest factor overall though cause not may people actually drifted these things until they saw the Anime and realised it's potential from then on.

Actually, the Trueno was a popular drift and/or touge car in Japan long before the Initial D Manga was even being written. Its low price and light weight made it a popular choice among illegal streetracers. Also, Keiichi Tsuchiya, who was a relatively famous streetracer at the time, drove a sponsored AE86 in an amateur racing league in the early 80s. I'm sure plenty of his fans decided to get an AE86 because of it.

Guess your right there , but Initial D did rise the popularity majorly on a widespread basis.👍

True, it was popular in Japan long before Initial D came out but I think it's safe to say that ever since it hit hard in the US, or even more-so on Australian shores, the number of AE86's on our roads has sky-rocketed; which is a good thing in my opinion:)

At last I've found out what this initial d stuff is all about. I'd never heard of it (him?) before I came to GTP. However, I did know about the Trueno (known over here as the Corolla). It was designed as a rally weapon, one of the last of the RWD rally cars, and had its own little cult here much the same as the (FWD) Ford Escort RS1600i. Light, peppy and tunable, it's also a natural on the dirt tracks in GT4 and can provide hours of fun there.

It's been my opinion for some time now that the price of Truenos and S13 Silvias went up from GT2 to GT3 partially because in real-life people started snatching these cars up. You never hear of an S13 Silvia or Corolla/Trueno costing more than $10,000 in GT1 or 2, for instance, yet in GT3 the S13 can no longer be bought on Day 1 as it's priced just beyond the $18,000 limit.:nervous:

It's not that ugly or old. It's not very fast standard but it's a great starting car and with a few mods can become a very good car. The control of a silicon tit-job?? :ouch: To me it's one of the better handling starter cars. I remember reading somewhere that one of the game designers said it was the best handling starter car.

Aside from the game people love it mainly for the reasons other people mentioned. It's always fun seeing a 200hp AE86 beat 500+hp drift cars.

@Ugliness -- not everyone likes a boxy 80's 3-door hatchback with pop-up headlights. ;)

@Age -- The car is over 20 years old now. That's pretty old.

@Speed -- A 1.6L 4-cylinder won't really get you anywhere in a hurry, but you're right, it's not that bad, and can be made faster.

@Finesse and control of a silicon tit-job -- well, it does have a live axle in the back...

The AE86 is truly a marvel, a symbol of the 1980's and also for Japan's knack for building hot hatches. I personally love this old ****box and what it stands for and I hope to own one some day. It may be slow as hell, but so is the Miata, but does anyone complain signifigantly about it? I don't think so.

S.S. version or not, that car's a pile. I don't understand how a cartoon can influence so many.....?

But to each their own, I suppose. :dunce:

People can be influenced by pretty much anything, if given a attractive subject. My prime example being The Fast and The Furious series, look how much this movie series has influenced the aftermarket industry because people saw the movie and wanted to make their cars look as "cool" as they are in the movie. It's also the same reason why every single kid my age wants a Skyline or a Supra and a Civic or Eclipse. Initial D is in a similar boat, but it's not as wildly popular since anime is not the "coolest" thing to most people, but it dosen't have to be, since the Drifting and JDM invasion have made this subject hot as of late. Luckly no one in my school yet wants an AE86 or Miata, which is considered a "gay car" in my area. But I have begun to start seeing more 240SXs in my school parking lot... I fear the day Tokyo Drift hits theaters since history likes to repeat itself and more sreet racing accidents will occur.

The cartoon has influenced american kids, yes, but the Trueno was already popular in Japan due to the fact that it was a small, light, economical, cheap RWD car. Street racers loved them for these traits.

The Trueno was even somewhat popular in the states for those same reasons, but as soon as it was outdated most people forgot about it -- the main reason why the same thing didn't happen in Japan is because of the drift competitions that started popping up in the late 80's.

I don't particularly care for the Trueno myself, but I respect it as a cheap, fun little RWD -- just like my car, although my car is slightly slower and has a more advanced rear suspension.

I think this car handles pretty well with it's 3-link rear axle. ;)
I don't understand why people fight over a car's popularity (not you guys per se, but in general), it dosen't really matter how valuable a car gets, but how valuable it is to you. And to me, it's very valuable to me (and I don't even own one!). We all have our personal favorite autos, lets enjoy them.... responsibly. :)

Because if you Max it with HP like in the game with all the upgrades, It can keep up and out handles several cars in the catagory above it, It is a Radical car once tricked out! It can handle a stage 3 Turbo and it is a FR set up, It want win any concourse trophies but it is quick for a 4 banger!

***Question*** How have you been playing this game since you were 3 and you are now old enough to be someones father? Wouldn't that make you around 9 or 10 years old MAX? GT3 isn't a 15 year old game yet, I tried to understand that and could'nt, Could you clear it up father?

Well, I own a Corolla GT-S (AE86 Sprinter Trueno) in real life, and I have to say, I beat H22 Preludes and 240 SXs with it. It isn't the fastest, but it does move. I had an SR5 (AE86 with single overhead cam motor aka POS) with minor suspension mods, and it handled well. Also, driving it in real life is incredibly fun. The sound it makes is beautiful. In fact, I had a 1986 MA70 Supra, and it was no where near as fun as the AE86. So what, you don't like the look? Who cares! As with any car, you can enhance the appearance buy doing simple things to it. Here are some examples....

Hopefully, this cultures you a little more. Not that you have to like them, but atleast respect in what people believe and know about this car. It's a fun car, and if you ever drive one, you will know what I mean.
