Turtle Racing League - Race Night Recap
Breakdown: Turtle Jr. GP (presented by ARS)
A high-speed technical GP circuit from days past played host to a pack of high-downforce cars that were not F1 machines, but quirky Red Bull Juniors courtesy of Gran Turismo. 11 cars from D1 and D2 were on the premises looking to score a good batch of points to close out the season, though we had a couple newcomers as well in the mix. Brands Hatch is a deceptively tricky circuit, and the drivers who didn’t know that yet would soon find out over the course of the 90 minute race.
Race Recap
D1: At the crack of dawn, we saw four Division 1 entrants: MrRacingLine sitting on row 1 next to D2’s Littleregret, DolphDrago further back on row 3 alongside Micantony, and Whitey093 on row 4, all of them looking dead into the sun while waiting for the lights to go. Immediately in turn 1, a spin from Mic put him down to last place. MrRacingLine would hold his ground up at the front after the start, though a bad move through turn 5 sent him and Dylanlikes88 off track. With RacingLine now in 3rd, DolphDrago held the lead and was hunting down LR265 as Whitey093 stood his ground in 2nd, following right behind mbobb1969 from D2. It didn’t take long for RacingLine to claw his way back up to 2nd in D1, as his pace was phenomenal and now he just had to close a 10 second gap to Dolph.
However the race was just getting underway, and with everyone in D1 having remarkable speed, RacingLine would have to pace himself. Flipping back a bit, Micantony hadn’t wasted anytime getting back into the game, giving chase to Whitey093 over the next 10 minutes and putting on a good show, when an aggressive entry into T5 sent him off into the grass, which was even worse than normal for the low-slung X2014s. Whitey093 still had his hands (and mirrors) full with D2’s Dylan, and as he progressed along to lap CaptTrueblood (D2) a collision between the two cost them both a lot of time whilst Micantony swept in to snag 3rd.
With 60 minutes on the clock, Dolph had taken the overall race lead from a regretful LR265, never looking back from that point on; MrRacingline was 10 seconds behind; Micantony was just under a minute behind and the leaders were coming up to lap Whitey. Micantony lost a fair amount of ground and 3rd place to Whitey093 after a bit of bad luck and some off-track excursions; however Whitey would bring it into the garage after 33 laps and retire the car right there, letting Micantony back onto the podium. At around the same time we saw RacingLine dip into the pit box for fresh tires and get ready to seriously chase down DolphDrago.
RacingLine continued to inch closer to Dolph as the laps wore on and the sun set, but there just wasn’t enough time to seal the deal. DolphDrago put together 96 points with his win, as MrRacingLine earned 95 with his silver finish and the pole position; just 7 seconds away from Dolph I might add. Micantony earned his 90 points with a good run in the final race netting bronze, while Whitey093 took home 87 points with 4th place.
D2: Just as in Division 1, entertaining action would be abound throughout the 90 minutes in Division 2. The field was slightly larger with 7 drivers eager to take the green. With an extended 10 minute qualifier, a blisteringly fast lap saw littleregret265 sit not just on pole for D2, but the entire field. Dylanlikes88 and aceboy127 sat one row behind him with MrRacingline being the only D1 qualifying Turtle in the top 4. Mbobb1969 occupied the 4th row overall and 4th in D2. CaptTrueblood and AngryEater filled the next two spots, while WilliFRendon was starting shotgun on the field after getting disconnected early during qualifying.
It was a clean start for D2 as all the drivers made it through turn 1 and the ensuing hairpin. Littleregret took a commanding early lead. His goal would be to stay out front all race. Dylan was in 2nd before a collision with MrRacingline halfway into the lap sent him off course. He would drop to the final spot. It would be a monumental task for him to get back to the front, however it would prove to be a challenge he was up to. CaptTrueblood spun off one turn later, providing Dylan with one spot. After the first lap, Littleregret held the lead, with aceboy moving up to 2nd and Mbobb 3rd. Willi kept his nose clean and had already made his way past three Turtles into 4th. AngryEater was especially cautious and was passed by Dylan for 5th. CaptTrueblood was in the final D2 spot.
Dylan started picking off a driver a lap, and found himself 3rd in D2 by the end of lap 4. Mbobb had a couple of off track excursions, one of which took him a while to get back on track. He may have been looking for a shortcut at where the full course splits off from the Indy circuit...
As such, he had fallen to 6th. The race raged on with Littleregret retaining the lead. On lap 23, he found himself off line while turning into a corner amongst a lapped car. Off he went into the grass, having lost 1st overall, but was still leading D2. There was much battling throughout with the remaining drivers. Too much to recap from this tired Turtle. AngryEater ran into mechanical trouble and had to retire from the race 30 laps in. Dylan was still on a mission to chase down Littleregret, having already grabbed 2nd from Aceboy 10 laps earlier.
At the halfway point, Willi and Aceboy made the decision to put on some fresh tires. The running order continued to have Littleregret out front, with Dylan 2nd, Willi 3rd, Aceboy 4th, Mbobb 5th, and CaptTrueblood 6th. Right at the 1 hour mark, Dylan made his move past Littleregret for the lead. Littleregret would keep him in sight, but alas, Dylan hung on for the final 30 minutes and the win. Willi and D1’s Micantony would have a good scrap for overall position. The D2 field would stay the same for the remainder of the race. Dylan rounded out his fantastic season with a win, Littleregret finished with another silver, and Willi grabbed one last podium. Aceboy just missed out in 4th, Mbobb marked his return to Turtle with a top 5 and CaptTrueblood’s debut led to a 6th. AngryEater’s DNF left him in the 7th and final position.
Overall - Turtle Jr. GP (presented by ARS)
D1: With his steadiness, Dolph was able to avoid spinning all race, only going off course a few times. His tire conservation paid off, barely holding off MrRacingline for the win. MrRacingline pushed hard to catch Dolph on his newer tires. Try as he might, he came up just short. Still, 2nd place is nothing to sneeze at. With his 3rd, naturally micantony was 3rd overall because there was only one race. And the same to Whitey in 4th.
D2: Dylan pulled out to the victory in Division 2, resulting in the overall win on the week. LittleRegret and Willi fought hard and finished 2nd and 3rd overall on the evening. Aceboy wound up 4th for the night, with mbobb 5th. CaptTrueblood kept on trucking all race for 6th. AngryEater was awarded 7th with his DNF.
Season Standings - Final
D1: The Season 1 Champion in Division 1 turned out to be a surprise. After his victory in the final race of the season, DolphDrago used his 5 best results to nab the overall win on 405 points. He was able to take advantage of not missing a race all season to get the most points he could, with the final race being the kicker. GTP_Ph7shr had a shot at the championship, having been the leader the week before. Unfortunately he would not be able to partake in the final race. His season was strong though, and his impressive weekly finishes would net him 2nd overall with 384 points. Scoring the bronze and 3rd overall was Whitey093. He was fast every week he turned up and finished with 377 points, a mere 7 points behind Phish. Just missing out on the podium was MrRacingline with 344 points. Week in, week out, he was always in the hunt for a victory. Rounding out the top 5 with 315 points was kross_24. Running the first 4 races of the season, he was a contender for the overall points win. Despite this, he missed the final 3 races of the season and subsequently fell down the leaderboard. Only 6 points behind with 309, mikey_2412 shared a similar deal. Likely the fastest Turtle out there, he only competed in 4 total races but made the most of them. Just 3 points short of Mikey was micantony. Also running 4 races, he had two very impressive finishes to cap his season, finishing on 306 points and 7th overall. The remaining field remained the same as the week before, with none participating in the finale. GTP_GTRacer22 and lllTrick tied for 8th overall with 147 points. The top ten was rounded out by SCHMEDRACER, scoring 123 points on the season. The rest of the Turtles, 11th through 15th: The_Noir_Antares 114, randy1122, 96, GTP_Bambi 94, l_Maxx_Pain_l 78, and GTP_Roamer2629 at 53 points.
D2: Division 2 would prove to be very competitive as well. But one Turtle would stand out amongst the rest, looking to earn a spot in Division 1. That Turtle was none other than dylanlikes88. With several wins on the season, the
worst of his best 5 races was a whopping 89 points. That’s saying something! He grabbed the top trophy with a hefty 475 points. littleregret265 was very strong all season as well, but he couldn’t quite match Dylan. Still, a large haul of 448 points saw him take the runner up spot with relative ease. The race was on for 3rd overall leading to the final race. WilliFRendon would prevail, grabbing the bronze overall with 417 points. Only 13 points back with 404 points was aceboy127. Both used race wins and multiple podiums to turn in great performances week after week. The other driver in the hunt was nolucktoday. Alas, not present for the season finale, he would settle for the final top 5 spot in the standings, still with a hard fought, gritty 385 points. One man who showed every week and never gave up, AngryEater made his presence known. His persistence paid off with a 6th place finish and 256 points. Running 3 races early in the season, Damonc84 was not seen again and used those finishes to top out with 229 points in 7th. CAB114 was the only other driver to run more than one race. His season ended with 111 points, nearly matching his GTP and PSN ID. By joining the final race of the season, one of the original founders of Turtle, mbobb1969, ran well enough to earn 84 points. Just one spot behind with 81 points was CaptTrueblood, a newcomer to the league in the finale. He rounded out the top 10 overall for the season. The remaining drivers all ran exactly one race on the season, 10th - 15th. Those included: Sassafrass_3 42, oharagbr19 33, RoadRageDudez 26, G_Parrilla 20, and finally snake-scent00 with 18 points.
Congrats to Dolph and Dylan on their wins at Brands Hatch, and also to the podium finishers MrRacingline, micantony in D1 and LittleRegret and Willi in D2. 👍
Thank you to every single Turtle who raced throughout Season 1. It made for an exciting and competitive season in both divisions. Without you, the series would not be possible.
I sincerely hope everyone had as much fun as I did this season and hope to see you excited for Season 2 when it begins in two weeks. I sure know I am!
