What about Win Patrol? Want to add that to the list, Toyo?

Scotty the Windows Watch Dog will sniff out malicious "mysteryware" , web attacks and parasites that may assault your computer. WinPatrol puts you back in control of your computer so you'll know what programs are and should be running at all times.

Increase Speed & System Performance. Detect & Neutralize Spyware.
Detect & Neutralize ADware. Detect & Neutralize Unwanted IE Add-Ons.
Detect & Neutralize virus infections. Automatically Filter Unwanted Cookies.
Avoid Start Page Hijacking. Detect HOSTS file changes.
Kill Multiple Tasks that replicate each other, in a single step!
Stop programs that repeatedly add themselves to your Startup List!

WinPatrol uses a heuristic approach to detecting attacks and violations of your computing environment. Unlike traditional security programs, WinPatrol doesn't scan your hard drive searching for previously identified threats. Instead a snapshot is taken of your critical system resources and WinPatrol alerts you to any changes that occur without your knowledge. You'll be warned immediately while others wait to download new definition files.

Wow, been awhile since this was updated. Here's a nifty app:

CCleaner

Short for CrapCleaner. It gets rid of junk like IE cache, temporary files, memory dumps, etc as well as junk files other apps leave around...like Firefox cache, WinZip history, etc. It also scans the registry for issues too.

My bad for not seeing this sooner. ITR, I'll be glad to add that to my list. If you want more added, please feel free to PM me. I don't mind the mail. :D

um.......just a quick question, I thought it would be better to ask here then start a new thread......

When internet explorer does not have the correct language or symbol pack installed fonts can come up as squares, question marks and other random stuff...

the question is, I dont remeber how to download or get the symbol packs.....language packs are no problem because you are prompted to install but there are STAR symbols on a certian webpage and they just come up as squares..... On my old computer I probably installed so much random stuff that it worked but on my new one I dont remember how to do it......can someone help?

You are looking for fonts that would fit your problem. My best solution is to find out what fonts they are (really a pain in the butt, you have to look at the page's "Source"), and download them. If you can find a fontpack covering all online fonts, then more power to ya'.

I'm looking at that ToniArts EasyCleanerto clean up my registry. What's the risk of it killing my operating system?

when I used to use it, I never encountered problems. Just in case, make a registry backup and put that to your desktop. If anything goes wrong, just boot into safe mode and restore it :)

Also, the link I made to the site is still active, but you can actually update the software through it's internal updating ability. Make sure to check that out.

I've just installed ToniArts EasyCleaner and cleaned the registry. My system is starting up a bit faster, I think. But programs are still starting up at the same speed as before. It might be just a lack of memory, since I have Norton Antivirus and Microsoft Antispyware working at the same time all the time. (As I was typing this post (I'm using Firefox 1.5) I checked memory usage in the task manager. There is less than 60,000 kilobits of memory compared to 260,000 total. When the system is running on idle, there may be 130,000k of memory available.) I tried using duplicate files, but the amount of files made it somewhat daunting to go ahead with. So I stopped prematurely. I then tried using unnecessary files, but EasyCleaner crashed. I know if I do something stupid I can undo it, but I'm still a bit weary of deleting duplicate and unnecessary files.

Microsoft's AntiSpyware isn't all that great of a Spyware Utensil. It's lacking in diversity when it comes to known spyware programs. Try picking up Ad-Aware or Pest Patrol.

PS. You could just post a new thread on these issues.

If you have Firefox, I would reccomend getting the Adblock and NoScript extensions, as they will stop 100% of popups when used together. NoScript is particularly useful, as you need to allow scripts on a page before any can run.

I was wondering, how do you edit/add the service information into the system properties on Win98 and XP? I am building a couple of computers, and I want to put my details in, but I can't remember which registry entry to change.

CRAPCRAPCRAP! black viper seems to be gone...bought out mabey?

i need the new tweaks for XP as well, but I want something where I don't have to page through six million things. this comp is swallowing 240k of the mem JUST for XP!

Whatchoo talkin 'bout Willis?

The most memory-consuming program I am running on my desktop right now is FireFox, and that is only 60K.

Explorer.exe should only run at around 16K.

Sounds like you have some spyware.

with only 252 of mem, I think I have a bit of a disadvantage. three programs are running 15k apeice, and there's 57 things running...about half of them dealing with the HP components on this comp

I heard that AVG was dropping free support for AVG sometime in January 2007. Don't know if they did. I use Avast, works great.

You have to register and they send an email with a key. Pretty cool.

All of this is confusing to me! ahh... Anyway i actually managed tm make windows xp ghetto by messing with the .dll files a bit. The funny thing is that even though i am at my computer which is completely capable of internet conection, i am using my new cell to type this.

Hey thanks for the post, Ive been using one which looks exactly like the real one but this one (apparently) is actually the real MS deal rewritten to run under xp. Will try it out.

Robin.

As long as you read the readme that comes with it you will be fine for installation. Its actually "the" Sidebar but you get another program in that package which allows Vista programs to be run under XP
