Hostess Brands, baker of iconic Twinkies cakes, said Friday it asked a court's permission to shut down the entire company after a strike crippled its operations.

The move shuts down one of the nation's oldest and largest producers of baked goods. Founded in 1930, it produces such well-known brands, aside from Twinkies, as Ding-Dongs, Ho Ho's, Sno Balls and Donettes, not to mention Wonder bread, which the company says is the best-selling white bread in the United States.

In a statement, Hostess said its bakery operations have been suspended at all plants and that it would lay off most of its 18,500 workers to focus on selling its assets. It said it has filed a motion with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court seeking permission to close its business and sell its assets, including 33 bakeries and 565 distribution centers.

The company said it would continue to deliver products and its stores would remain open for several days to sell already-baked products.

"The Board of Directors authorized the wind down of Hostess Brands to preserve and maximize the value of the estate after one of the company's largest unions, the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union (BCTGM), initiated a nationwide strike that crippled the company's ability to produce and deliver products at multiple facilities," Hostess said in the statement.

On Nov. 12, Hostess permanently closed three plants because of the strike. Two days later, the company announced that it would be forced to liquidate if enough workers did not return to restore normal operations by 5 p.m. ET Thursday.

"We deeply regret the necessity of today's decision, but we do not have the financial resources to weather an extended nationwide strike," said Gregory F. Rayburn, chief executive officer.

The BCTGM was not immediately available to comment.

If only they could have lasted until Colorado and Washington's decriminalization of marijuana took full effect...

This should be a warning to unions that going on strike when your company is already struggling is a good way to have no job.

Tallahassee's pissed.

"Someday very soon, life's little Twinkie guage is going to go empty."

Not tried making these yet found on web today Nov 16,2012:idea:

Homemade Twinkies
Adapted from Gourmet Cookbook by Joy the Baker
Makes about 12

2 cups all-purpose flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
10 Tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1 cup sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/8 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
1 cup milk
Put a rack in the center of the oven and preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Create your own Twinkie-like molds by wrapping heavy-duty aluminum foil around a 4-inch-long spice bottle. Leave the top of the mold open so you can pour in the batter. (For a how-to video, click here.)
In a bowl, sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside.
Beat together butter and sugar in a large bowl with an electric mixer at medium-high speed until pale and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
Beat in eggs one at a time, beating for 1 minute in between each addition.
Beat in vanilla and almond extract. Reduce speed to low, add half of the flour mixture, and beat until incorporated. Add milk and beat until incorporated. Add the rest of the flour, and beat until incorporated.
Spray prepared Twinkie molds with nonstick spray and divide the batter between them. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes, or until the cakes are just slightly golden and a pick inserted in the center of the cakes comes out clean. Remove from the oven and let cool completely before filling with marshmallow cream.

Marshmallow filling
by Todd Wilbur of Top Secret Recipes
2 teaspoons very hot water
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 cups (one 7-ounce jar) marshmallow creme
1/2 cup shortening
1/3 cup powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
Combine salt with hot water in a small bowl and stir until salt is dissolved. Let cool.
Combine the marshmallow creme, shortening, powdered sugar, and vanilla in a medium bowl and beat until fluffy, using an electric mixer on high speed.
Add salt water and beat to combine.
When the cakes are cool, use a skewer or a chopstick to make three holes along the bottom, moving the stick around slightly to create space inside the cake. Fit a pastry bag with a small tip and fill it with the marshmallow creme mixture (or scoop it into a resealable bag and snip off a tiny bit of one corner; pipe filling into each cake, using the three holes.

So the company is having financial trouble and the workers don't like what they have so they strike and drive the company out of business. Atleast that settles the dispute.

Hurray Unions!

Who's the CEO so I can boo him or her?

Boo! Boo this person!

From first post:

"We deeply regret the necessity of today's decision, but we do not have the financial resources to weather an extended nationwide strike," said Gregory F. Rayburn, chief executive officer.

I've read at least 3 internet articles on this, I can't decipher if it was a good company on hard times or if it was greedy ceo/shareholders doing ala Romney style.

No mater what, I have to wonder how the striking employees feel now.

Listening to news of it on the radio, apparently this was the second time they had been in and out of bankruptcy in the past decade; so unless we had some DaimlerChrysler shenanigans happening, I'm thinking the former.

Hell of a way to call the union's bluff, though.

General rule of thumb: When your company is in bankruptcy restructuring trying to shut down production works...permanently.

Not happy with your pay? Now you have no pay.

Damnit Jerry, why ruin our fun?

You are right of course, I think the problem is inflated wages on both sides. Suddenly a carrot has turned to diamonds.

And now you pay for their welfare.

Depending on what state they are in they may start receiving from their own unemployment insurance (provided by the state and required in KY) until it runs out. How long that lasts depends on how much they've paid in.

And just who will pay for the welfare/food stamps that most will also get?

I'd imagine someone will be buying at least the Twinkies, Ding Dongs and Ho Hos brands as they are well known brands.

Unfortunately I will probably be losing my Zingers.:(

The world ends this year, this is one of the first signs!!!

Actually, I always wanted to eat a Twinkie, never had the chance to so far. Hope this won't mean I'll never be able to.

It does, unless you get one quick, maybe later you will find one with the label, but it won't be the genuine article. Not that it maters all that much, they are nothing special.

Hahahah. I just saw a news report calling the workers who were striking "Bakers." The people who make twinkies are bakers! Who knew?!

A little bit of both. But it was indicated that the cost structure of the union wages and benefits forced hostess into bankruptcy the first time, and again this time.

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/workers-react-hostess-closing-range-200800374.html
"Mike Hummell, a receiving clerk and a member of the Bakers' union working in Lenexa, Kan., said he was making about $48,000 in 2005 before the company's first trip through bankruptcy. Concessions during that reorganization cut his pay to $34,000 last year, earning $16.12 an hour. He said the latest contract demands would have cut his pay to about $25,000, with significantly higher out-of-pocket expenses for insurance."

Here's a major red flag, this man made $48,000 as a receiving clerk?! I was a receiving manager for Goodyear and I made 38,000, the clerks made $8.50/hour. Other companies pay between minimum wage and $12/hour for that position and Hostess was paying approximately $27/hour, plus benefits - over twice as much as the average. No company can be competitive with a wage structure that severe, even with the 2005 reductions. Then when Hostess asked to reduce wages the union workers freak and go on strike?

Yes. Do not panic people. Twinkies and Wonder bread will be around for a long long time.

Toronado
Not sure if serious.

I could not live on that. It would be very difficult to move from 27/hour to 20/hour. But 12/hour would be extremely difficult. It would be hard to have any luxuries at all. You would be struggling to buy food. (We don't have food stamps here.)

If you mean being around by having the "Name" then maybe quality of product not likely, locally we had Kern's bread now we have a product with the name on it that taste like crap same for Terry's chips, Kay's Ice cream,Flav-O-Rich milk, and several other names that local (Food City) stores try to pass off as name brands that only carry the name not even the recipe of said product. Most of it is like that cost cutter crap thats not fit to put in a trash can.
