$0~$6,000 was the no tax bracket for last year.
Now it is $0~$16,200 or 23.9 hours a week.

Our cost of living is also higher, also a part of our pay goes into our retirement fund called Superannuation, I think you call yours called 401K.

I only know what a Twinkie is because of Bill Murray and Harold Ramis

I had a hostess cupcake last night just for old times sake.

It was disgusting. Good riddance.

Meh, I'm not a huge fan of Twinkies or the Cupcakes, I really don't-
WAIT, DRAKES IS GOING DOWN TOO?! NOOOOOOO!

Exactly. At certain point, you must stop dumping tons of sugar in it, because you can't taste nothin' anymore. Hostess may learn about this after ordeal.

They won't.

Does anyone have knowledge about the pension part of this? I've used my google championship skillz and found this and that but, nothing concrete enough for me.

Did Hostess more or less steal 55 million or not? It looks like the strike was not about wages imo, in fact did the largest union involved not accept a deal with wage cuts?

benefitspro
"We hope the parties can reach an agreement that allows Hostess to stay in business in order to preserve jobs and protect pensions," said J. Jioni Palmer, senior advisor and director of communication for the PBGC. "However, PBGC exists to safeguard retirement security in uncertain times, and that’s what we’ll do for the 2,300 men and women in Hostess’s single-employer plan if the company liquidates. The plan is underfunded by about $55 million".

I too would like to know what happened in more detail. I do not like either side of the argument taking unfairly from the other.

GO USA! WE DON'T NEED TWINKIES, WE'LL JUST EAT THE DAMN SUGAR STRAIGHT FROM THE PACKAGE, THAT'S HOW WE DO IT IN AMERICA!!!!

Yeah!!!

Though I never had Twinkies, I thought it would have been rather cute if the thread title was "No More Twinkies? No More Happiness".

Who can live on $12/ hour?

I'm middle management and I make about $5 (US) an hour before taxes take away about 25% of that. Mayhaps you're thinking Aussie dollars which are smaller and upside down?

Underfunded means the money is not there, not necessarily that the money actually existed in the first place. A struggling, bankrupt company will not likely be liquid enough to cover all its obligations, as the budget falls short.

RIP Twinkies. Ye were horrid, but I thought ye'd be here forevermore. Like that accursed Pepsi...

I know that, I have not jumped to any conclusions, I was asking if anyone knew.

Well, from the details available, seems like the company was just on the rocks. Been there myself, where sales from the business are nowhere near enough to cover all your obligations beyond day to day wages and supplies.

Sometimes quitting outright is the least expensive way out. Especially if you have an outdated product line-up that you can't afford to price at what the market is willing to pay, anymore. (mine was printing. Digital has killed the business) Here's an interesting take on why the business was unsustainable:

Less a labor issue than a "We don't know how to make anything else and can't sell our products at a decent profit margin any more" issue. Mind you, the strike didn't help.

Pretend pensions hurt, I want to be 100% on the companies side and I understand how business works plenty well. It's a lagit question that so far I cannot find the answer too.

Stealing pensions is nothing new in the u.s.

I don't know if folks in here have had Twinkies recently (since they're going under, I'm guessing you haven't), if you hadn't tried them as an adult, they are nasty, very very nasty.

Hostess makes better food than the Twinkie, not sure why everyone is so focused on that.

Had some of these recently too. Not TOOOOO bad if you freeze them first. But I'm not going to miss them. Even the ding dong if you have more than one in a week you're ready to puke.

One word: Zombieland. Then there's the myths that they never go bad and whatnot. They're like the cockroaches of food apparently.

Pretty much all Hostess products feel and taste unhealthy. They're not good quality sweet pastries like you might find at a local doughnut shop or something. They're just gross and have been to me for years.

I like them, you know? But face it, they aren't that good, man.

I think we're seeing exactly why they went out of business.

I haven't had one in years. Not by choice, just never even thought about it. I try to stay away from "super junk" food.

This deeply saddens me, I have a box of some here still. Think I might hold off on them now for very special occasions, even though I do love them a lot. :(

I'd be more horrified if Mars went out of business, I love Snickers.
