Good to see Twente take the win, hope they get over the loss of Ruiz to Fulham. He's a good player.

It sure seems so, they just keep on showing the good (not Champions league worthy) soccer of the past few year.

Stoke beat Besiktas 2-1, I'm quite surprised by that result. Guess I should say well done to Stoke, and well done to the other English teams that played tonight as well.

Right, since it's the Knock out stages and whether people think it's good or bad English clubs have a definite chance of winning it this year, so time seems ripe for a slight revival of this thread :)
Man City escaped well tonight after Varela's first half goal, Ballotelli's nudge on the defender for the own goal was a bit lucky, and good city play for the last. At home and 2-1 up, must be favourites to beat Porto.
Man United also beat Ajax 2-0, gradually players coming back from injury, didn't see that one but suspect it's gonna be rather routine to ensure qualification for the next round at home. Stoke did lose 1-0 but are still in it if they can win away from home somehow.
Didn't expect to see Man united and Man City ever grace this thread with their presence this season, but both have a shot of winning it.

No shock that Ajax got beaten by Man U, only that I expected more goals, Ajax sucks so bad, they need to get a good asswhooping next game.

At least the other 3 Dutch teams won their matches. Az 1-0 against Anderlecht, PSV 2-1 at Trabzonspor, and Twente 1-0 at Steau Bukarest.

My Porto lost to Man City. Didn't watch the game but all the folks I know who saw it said the ref was giving it to Man City. Balotelli's goal was apparently not supposed to be one. I have the game highlights DVRed but haven't seen it yet.

Porto has never won on English soil. That's one ding for my club. The other being that we need to win by a bigger margin than 1-0 which I don't see happening. Danilo got hurt bad and might be out for the season which throws even more woes in the mix :(

Dutch football isn't what it used to be. They can't keep hold of their best players anymore.

That has nothing to do with Dutch football. That has to do with the ridiculous amounts of money the big clubs are willing to pay for a player. That destroys smaller competitions.

Porto were good but Man City were all over them in the second half, it probably deserved a draw. Ballotellis goal was legal, it was just a gentle shoulder nudge to throw Alvara off balance. I trust you've seen the game now, but that was just my opinion.

What the hell is going on with Manchester United?? Ajax is actually keeping up, and sometimes overpowering them.

Nervy stuff for United in the end, 87th minute goal from Ajax made it close but 3-2 on aggregate in the end. Worrying frail to lose at home, not a good sign for the coming stages. Athletic Bilbao next

I put it down to complacency, we seem to score early then ease up to a point where we can't get a grip of the game again.

It's more to do with the constant rotation and the lack of stability within the team. It was the same with the CL early in the season. You simply cannot put out a back five with the average age being 20 years old, with Park sitting in midfield offering very little, and hope that you'll get a good performance.

But to a point you're right with the complacency in that we just fell asleep. You put Carrick, Evra, Ferdinand in that midfield/back four region and it's a very easy win for United.

In saying that, United are through and we've managed to give our big names the better part of 10 days off to rejuvenate. Very rarely do any teams in this part of the season get that opportunity.

Lets hope it's paid off and we hand Norwich a hiding.

I think Fergie needed to play that team, some needed game time, some needed resting. Out of the 2 trophies we can win this is always going to be the one he experiments with.

Well that went well. And, if it hadn't been for de Gea, could have been a whole lot worse.

This didn't happen. It was a win, but not a convincing one.

Neither Manchester club seems to be having much luck in Europe this year.

Quite... at least the commentary team on C5 noted how well de Gea had played - his fingertip save (at 1-1?) was brilliant.

Man U were extremely lucky to come away only a goal down, but if both sides play anything like that in Spain, I can't see Man U going any further.

How about AZ against Udinese? Udinese had nothing against them, I can see AZ going to the finals, would be nice for a change.

If De Gea wasn't there it could have easily been 7 or 8-2. To be honest our (United's) defence was very poor. Great game to watch though as it was fast pace. There was a lot of doubt over De Gea at the start of the season but I reckon in about a year or 2 he could match Van Der Sa

AZ are very good this year. I hope they continue to do well, there have been some disappointments from that league this year.

The Dutch league is quite entertaining to watch, although it isn't the highest level of football. But the coach of AZ, Gert Jan Verbeek is hammering in that hours in the gym benefits Dutch football. So that they can keep up high tempo football. And Mclaren back at Twente gave them new found (once a bit lost) powers.

Man United lose 2-1 and 5-3 on aggregate. When I saw the fixture didn't think that was the likely result at all, but Bilbao played well both legs.

Dear Clichy and Nasri

Hope you are enjoying your time on the bench, whilst your new team crashes out of the Europa league.

Hell of a game for Schalke, 2-0 down on aggregate after half an hour, and they've now come back with 4 goals, Huntelaar with 3 of them. They look a serious force, with Raul still getting the job done.
