Ok. I have a computer with 400 MHZ and I want to upgrade it to at least 800 MHZ. What are the best chips around to upgrade it with?

Well check out pricewatch.com for something in your pricerange - i'd say look for AMD Athlons, i guess. But i really don't know much in that area.

Ask your buddies if they have any connections and could help you out.

Say what? I think you were a little redundant there, but I am not sure. And they aren't that expensive, for what he wants. Probably around $50. He might want to buy new RAM as well though. Not sure.

amd's run too hot but p4's on the other hand may be a bit more but they run cooler

There are a lot of things you have to take into consideration when upgrading your CPU.

I suggest you read around the net and get some knowledge first though.

AMD Athlon's are faster than Pentium 4's in content creation applications (such as Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Dreamweaver, etc). Pentium 4's are a shade faster than Athlon's in 3D games though.

Athlon's are a hell of a lot cheaper than P4s and for pratically the same results, I'd take the Athlon.
