In late 1969, the Fittipaldi team was to enter the Rio 1000km at the Jacarepagua with a Alfa Romeo powered prototype. That car's build was running late due parts being delayed.

The team decided a build a twin-engine VW Beetle to go against the likes of a Alfa Romeo T33, Ford GT40, and Lola T70. The two VW 1600 engines combined to make over 400 HP in a 407kg (897 lb) car.

The Beetle set the second fastest time in qualifying and ran 2nd to the Alfa T33 early in the race before the gearbox broke.

Never heard of this before! What an incredible build (do you see the fuel tank anywhere in the diagram? the fuel tank is the driver's seat!), and what a pity it ate gearboxes for breakfast
