Does somebody personally have experience doing work to VW W8 engines mixed with manual transmissions and 4motion? The parts are my biggest concern, but since a timing kit is basically $2000 and the clutch is $1000, I want to see what I ought to set aside as my in case I decide to replace additional components find
Please give advice, and how YOU personally did it. I don't have dealer tech. I have a couple of hours here and there at a shop to get the car on the camera I'm going to use to develop a strategy. Afterwards I'm going to disassemble my front and engine utilizing jack stands or what is known as the "service position." It doesn't seem feedable, but I have a friend who did this once, and my reservations are that he would really like this car. Badly
So I don't want to dismantle it without having cash on the table to buy any extra pieces that we need. How much overage/extra do you incur while removing and installing the engine and transmission assy?

This is not a forum full of VW W8 experts. You will have better luck on a more VW focused site.

On the other hand, I wonder how hard it would be to swap a 4.2 S4 drivetrain into a Passat, the platforms seem similar enough heh...

You would be better off asking such a question on VWVortex. This is a “cars in general” forum, so not really the place to talk about problems specific to one car, especially one that’s quite rare.

They sold about 500 of those in the USA. Your odds of coming across someone with experience of those is slim even on a VW forum, let alone here.

It's not a bad job to do... once the engine is put of the car and you have someone else do it.... while your there, I would definitely replace every other part that requires the engine being pulled. Water pump, oil pump, thermostat, valve cover gaskets, intake gaskets, maybe head gaskets. Just do a complete overhaul that way you can confidently rock another 70-100k miles out of the engine.
