I've been thinking of running some semi-length sprints (25 laps at Suzuka East, for example) in detuned Formula Gran Turismos. I've decided to act upon my ideas, as part of the W.M.A. series.

Also, I'd like to see when I could schedule these short races, to be convenient for a majority. Please answer the poll accurately.

This series will run under the "World Motorsports Association large banner," meaning that some drivers will be asked to compete at a lower level of motorsports before competing in this series, as this series will be a difficult series for beginners.

History:

The Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear is an open-wheel racecar driver development series in North America. Competitors use spec Formula Mazda race cars built by Star Race Cars. The original series, using first-generation tube-frame cars started in the early 1990s, with the current, high-tech, carbon-fiber car released in 2004. The series has historically included road courses, street courses, and ovals. The series' primary sponsors are Mazda and Goodyear and the cars, while purpose built for the track with carbon fiber monocoques, are powered by 250 horsepower Mazda 'Renesis' rotary engines. The series' stated goal is "to develop new race driving talent". In 2010 the series became a part of The Road to Indy, and in 2011 became governed by IndyCar as the sanctioning body.

Specs:

The cars will run 468 hp and 605 kg, with tuning allowed, except gear ratios. We apologize for the inaccurate Star Mazda specs, but it is almost impossible to recreate a REAL Star Mazda car in the game. The specs will be checked (forced) at every race, meaning that cheating the specs IS** impossible, as your car will fail inspection and will not meet the restrictions. Tire compound will be decided later, pending current discussion. Oil changes will be necessary to get your car up to 468 hp at 50% limiter.

The build:

50.0% power limiter
55 kg. ballast (set to 50/50 weight distribution @ -30 ballast position)
Downforce: adjustable front and rear (anything you want)
No transmission tuning (specs given below)
Racing hards

Transmission gearboxes must run the following:

YOU MUST USE THIS ORDER. Start with the FINAL GEAR, 7 gear, then top speed.

6 gears MAXIMUM (seventh gear extended to maximum length)
390 km/h top speed setting
Final gear: 2.500

1st: 11.169
2nd: 7.400
3rd: 5.363
4th: 4.047
5th: 3.180
6th: 2.601
7th: 1.800

These transmission settings are designed to slow the car down, while still giving it room to gain speed in draft, without redlining, at our ovals.

Race Procedure:

All races will run WITH qualifying. Qualifying will last fifteen minutes, and will be completed just before the race. There will be a five minute break between qualifying and the race. During these five minutes, the grid will be set, and all drivers will attend to the calls of nature, if necessary. The race will start promptly, with 20 minutes on the "Total Time Timer," and the drivers will begin a formation lap. During the formation lap, all drivers are to get into their position, as qualified. Drivers stop in their accompanying grid boxes for a standing start. Race director calls a time on the "Total Time" counter. Drivers accelerate when that time is reached. Upon crossing the Start/finish line, the race goes green. At ovals, cars will not be doing a standing start, and will maintain the formation lap pace, until crossing the start/finish line.

Cautions:

In the case of a large crash (involving three or more drivers) a caution will be called by all three drivers involved. If less than three drivers call for caution, there is no caution. Cautions will be 1 lap long. The leader will slow to 62 mp/h or 100 km/h and drive until the other drivers have caught up, and the race will be restarted at the start/finish line. If the caution occurs in the final sector, the next full lap is under caution. Cautions will not occur with less than 2 laps left. In the case of a caution with three laps left, the "Green&white-checkered" system will be used, meaning that there will be a one or two lap battle for the win.

Points:

1st-29, 2nd-25, 3rd-22, 4th-19, 5th-17, 6th-15, 7th-14, 8th-13, 9th-12, 10th-11,11th-10, 12th-9, 13th-8, 14th-7, 15th-6, 16th-5, Pole=point, Race fast lap=point

We use the Star Mazda points system.

Not yet. I can, whenever you want me to. I didn't know that you DID want me to. :( My bad. :scared: :ouch: :indiff: :ill: :guilty: :yuck: :grumpy:

Please forgive me? :) 👍

Lol ... no sweat ... when you can hey ...

Already done man. Anyways, I'm going to have a shower, and sleep, so that I can get up at a reasonable hour, for the racing tomorrow. I'll talk to polar when he's awake. In the meantime, I just need to find a way to slow these cars down 55 km/h, and they'll be pretty well close to the real cars.

Wow, turns out, that it's next to impossible to really manage that. I guess that's the problem with having 195 more hp than the ACTUAL Star Mazda cars. However, I did manage to get the weight set PERFECTLY to match the real deal, and the downforce is similar... :)

Cool ... we'll hook up some testing tonight before VLN ...

Unless no one's online.

Edit: Oh. My. God. BEST SERIES EVER. Even just hotlapping in these cars is fun, exciting and rewarding. It rewards smooth drivers so much more! It's actually teaching me more about real racing, more than tossing the cars into corners.

Just a reminder: We're now accepting entries, for testing.

This link will take you to our registration page. It takes less than a minute to register, and we will have all the information we need, to register you.

Thanks for taking the time to register!

Registered drivers will now be listed in the Original Post (OP from now on.) There are currently 6 drivers, who ARE in this series, or may consider joining. One of those drivers doesn't know which colour of Formula Gran Turismo he will get. That means that there are at least 10 more spots available!

So are we running teams or complete independents in Star Mazda? ... If it's teams then I'll nominated mine the Purple Fairies ...:lol::lol::lol::crazy:

LOL, I haven't decided. In real life, there are teams, and I might run teams, just to guilt people into coming.

Just browsing and I thought i'd mention that a fully run in FGT with oil change has 936bhp so you won't be able to power limit to 445. The lowest you'll be able to go is 468bhp at 50%.

^ True. I had a 928hp FGT and it would only go down to 464hp, so I'd suggest raising the HP to 470.

Yeah. We ran into this problem yesterday. Thanks for giving me the final HP figures, though. Much appreciated! :)

I've registered for the series. I am so unbelievably excited for this championship! I gotta get a tune on my FGT asap. My test yesterday had a stock tune on the LSD and suspension lol. I also just noticed that the OP is calling for 50/50 weight distrubution. I didnt move my ballast, I was at 47/53 lol. Small bugs to work out :P Looking forward to it though! :D:tup:

Great to have you! Yeah, the ballast thing was me thinking "Okay, the real weight, with driver in car, of a Star Mazda car is 605 kg. Therefore, I'll add 55 kg. of ballast to the car. Hey, why not match the real life weight distribution, while I'm working with the ballast? :D Multitasking, the non-feminine way. I mean, when it deals with weight distribution, that's pretty manly, right? :scared:

I agree whole heartedly. I have an idea of a Caterham one make series that I just might decide to organize under W.M.A. but this isnt the place for that discussion lol.

I guess I'll be the first to post a benchmark time for Rome. I didnt run a full 20+1 but only at 9 did my RH's begin to show wear. My fastest time came on lap 9 as well

Rome Fast Lap: 56.700
Mid 57's seem to be my average though.

Also, this question came up in WRC. Are we allowed unlimited practice and testing in this league?

I can't say no, to that. I'll allow it.

I run so many series I donno if I'd have time for this one. I may, but I'm still on the fence. These cars are so easy to drive. Maybe to even it with the Mazda cars (which are much slower) you could apply more ballast, possibly to 700kg, it'll give it a closer power to weight ratio of the real life series. Doesn't matter to me. Lighter is better anyway.

They're easy to drive, sure, but, not easy to drive quickly. Besides, this series is unique, in a way, in that it offers a very INCREDIBLY easy introduction to drafting, (at Indy and Motegi) without being hard to drive (NASCARs take up so much space, on NASCAR tracks, that if one driver slips up, the whole field wrecks. These cars... you'll make it 20 laps of Motegi without even bumping into each other.
