Its interesting to look at the history of drug laws in the US. most where enacted in response to fears from the upper class ( read wasps and /or other rich) to deal with percieved problems or fears of the negro's / chinese/ other immigrant group. The laws where mostly always a way to regulate the bad side of the tracks. Its not hard to see that was mostly class warfare under the banner of "public safety " If you look at it in this light its easy to understand how Hemp could be illegal while booze is not. In the 50's it was a black problem or beatnik / communist thing. In the 60's is was the hippy degenerates and communist along with the black thing..etc. etc. All we have accomplished with our laws is to create a class of criminals and a place to train new ones while we wharehouse them. along to create a multy billion dollar underground economy that is un- taxed un- regulated and un- safe as well as unsavory. we have police chasing stoners instead of bombers and murderers, the money spent could be well used in the school system to educate . this system is broke and no one wants to fix it. but they don't mind building new prisons to create new criminals so they can build more prisons. It's clear it wont ever work the way it is but years go by without noticable change , except for the worse. You want to reduce gun violence ? try reducing drug gangs by eliminating profits for drug dealing. You want to get rid of petty thefts and burularies ? try putting drug addicts who steal to support thier habits and the people who supply them in a program of education and maintenance for thier habit(s). Drugs , be they street drugs or pharms are dangerouse you can die from them or get to a point when you wish you would. Jail wont solve that.
( I put pot in the no brainer , if ANY drug should be legal its that one catagory, my brother died at 35 yrs old from a cocain od and my uncle at 52 from drinking himself to death..even AFTER they removed parts of his stomache and intestines over the years)
