War Thunder (F2P Air/Ground combat MMO)

That awkward feeling when I researched the SU-100P but left it unbought, and had a chance to buy it with 50% discount (on WT birthday event)... but forgot to do it. :banghead: I could have saved 130,000 SL.

Well, anyway, it's not so much to be angry about. Just a couple of ground attack flights on my premium Il-2M with premium account... Yeah, I should get one when there's still 50% discount for 90 days. That will be helpful to finally get to the T-64A, a somewhat proper tank for 9.7+ BR battles with my Mi-24D in the setup. I still have two more tanks to unlock (they'll be BMP-1 and T-54 1949) before I can research the Rank VI. Because killing the Abrams and XM-1's with a T-34-85 is fun and challenging, but still difficult...

Uhhh...how many updates happened in the last 10 days? I turn on my PC, and by the time I get to WT, it still had 45 GB to download.
The 1.83 update is so heavy because, as Gaijin said, they repacked the game's files to "improve performance".

It seemed to run a bit smoother. Naval battles weren't bad, had to figure out how to use them first, but it's fairly interesting. Considering that I'm stubborn and want to build up my T1 vehicles, I'll finally reach heli's about the time they end operation.

Ive just started getting into ships yesterday. I bought into the Russian line up back when they were selling packs to get into the CBT so that is what I am working on now. Im hoping for that Russian biased power, but I've not seen much of it yet. It is a fun game mode, but it's hard at the low levels. Those little PT boats go down so fast. Cant wait to get into the tier 2 boats.

Russia didn't have much of a navy during WW2, other than destroyers, and CLs, but I doubt we'll see much of the CLs (if we're getting the AH class for Germany, maybe then...)

Realistically, based upon both historical facts, and how WoWS plays out, the US is going to have the best navy. Well defended ships from air attack, decent speeds, excellent armament, and a plethora of options to choose from. I'd say second would be Germany or the UK, depending upon how they plan to introduce them to the game... we'll see...

The Mi-24D needs a BR drop (to 9.3 would be fine). It's kind of unfair that it's on the same BR as the Mi-24V (9.7) that can carry S-8 rockets (that aren't as useless as the S-5) and, more importantly, 8 Shturm missiles. The 24D has only 4 Falanga-PV ATGM's that are awfully slow and the target can drive away a few times while the missile is in the air. Yesterday, I barely managed to destroy a FlakPz Gepard with one. The T-34-85 performs better at Rank VI. :D

Im hoping for that Russian biased power, but I've not seen much of it yet.
I almost don't play it (because I find these little fishing boats annoying a bit), but from what the streamers say, the Soviet navy isn't so good in this game. The top Soviet ship, Krasny Kavkaz ("Red Caucasus") is bad compared to Emden (the top German CL). So, no "Russian bias" to hope for.

Also, don't forget that from 1st to 5th of November you can get a free premium gunboat, Ya-5M, for winning 5 naval battles with 50%+ activity.

There were also heavy cruisers (Kirov-class) and battleships (such as Sevastopol-class), but no carriers.
Reportedly, there were some files in the recent update that mention Prinz Eugen (a German heavy cruiser), so we might expect CA's in the future.

I got the AH-1G, and it's only useful for two things: capturing bases and fighting other helicopters. It's very hard to destroy a tank with Hydras.
But still, I'll slowly get to the UH-1C.

Pizza tanks are announced!

The official tree isn't revealed yet, but this is a fan speculation about what the Italian ground tree may include:
mI5OsA5P5Zo.jpg

It's safe to say that Italy will offer a good selection of wheeled vehicles, with B1 Centauro on the top.

Semovente 105/25 M43 is available for pre-order.

Finally! Supersonic fighters and air-to-air missiles are announced!

Frequently asked questions
Q. Will be the F-4/F-16/F-22/Su-27, etc. be added to the game?

Further development towards more modern aircraft is possible, but these additions will be incremental, as it requires precise analysis of vehicle possibilities and their effect on game balance. Besides, the addition of specific aircraft doesn’t mean the addition of the whole range of weapons available for it’s real prototype.

Q. Any plans on aviation units like the Tu-95 or B-52?

We doubt strategic bombers realization is required, though some tactical strike aircraft. including subsonic attackers, may possibly appear in the game.

Q. What about airborne radars and radar homing missiles?

These may possibly appear in War Thunder if we manage to make them easy to use, easy to learn, and without affecting gameplay and game balance. We will keep you in the loop, whenever we start working on it.

Q. Helicopters carried rather advanced air-to-air missiles. Won’t they affect the game balance?

That’s true, as helicopters had been equipping air-to-air missiles in later periods. Those were more advanced and effective units, like AIM-9L, and R-60. However, helicopters have less maneuverability than aircraft, also having their engines heat signatures significantly less visible, i.e. shorter lock-on distance for missiles. This makes opposition against helicopters and aircraft more fair: A jet fighter has better dynamics, while a helicopter is able to launch missile at a distance exceeding it’s guns aiming range. In this encounter helicopters’ air-to-air missiles won’t be too imbalanced, especially with the planned countermeasures, like heat flares and jamming systems.

Q. What about counter-measures for aircraft?

They will be introduced along with aircraft that had such devices.

Q. Do you plan to add air-to-air missiles for already existing aircraft?

It is possible if an aircraft could be equipped with such armament.

Q. Will there be any BR changes for rank 5 aircraft and against which enemies will new aircraft fight? Will they not be too effective against the aircraft already presented in the game?

BR for new top aircraft will be selected as a base from their capabilities and the capabilities of their opponents. In addition the new top aircraft will have implemented a number of features and limitations inherent to real vehicles which will also give the chance for aircraft already existing in the game.

Q. Will be 6th rank aircraft available immediately with the release of update 1.85, or will it be implemented as CBT?

Yes, they will be available immediately with the release of the update 1.85. We do not plan CBT for the 6th rank.

Q. Will aircraft of the 6th rank be added also for other nations?

Yes, we plan to add 6th rank for aircraft of other nations, we are working on it.

Q. With the addition of Rank VI Aircraft, does this mean there will be no more piston engined / WW2 Era aircraft added?

No, we will continue to work on aircraft from the 30’s to the 50’s as well.

Q. Will you implement a sonic boom effect in the game?

Yes, we will. Both the sound effect and the visual one - the Prandtl–Glauert singularity.

Damn. Now I truly can justify going out tomorrow to buy a damn keyboard, mouse and some kind of joystick combo..

Any word on what their April fools event is this year?
Lots of rumours, nothing solid. "Buggy event coding, there will be no event, there will be free abrams for all willing 'muricans". So, the usual..

Apparently UFO's :odd::eek:

UFOs with laser guns. They can also dive underwater and fight like submarines, using guided torpedoes like subs in the previous April fools event.

A Russian youtuber also noted that you can destroy enemy torpedoes with your lasers. So it might be a test of missile damage mechanics (to enable the ability to shoot down enemy AT missiles with machine guns or SPAAGs), or maybe even active defense systems for tanks in future.

Also, at the time this thread was sleeping, there were more additions to the game. Rank VII for ground vehicles (including M1A1 Abrams, T-80U, ZRPK Tunguska, Challenger 2), radar and ground-to-air missile mechanics, braking parachutes for Rank VI jet planes, and more.

They could be also be testing the implementation of VTOL for future use.

I've heard some of the VTOL stuff being tossed around but I don't buy it yet as much as I do the other theories (I'm leaning more towards defense systems rather than a new type of vehicle being introduced as I think Gaijin have created enough new vehicle platforms recently that they now can flesh out).

I don't buy it either although a Yak-38 v. Harrier would be cool.

Maybe in keeping with the supersonic jets theme, add a Yak-41.

I personally don't want new vehicles until they implement new game modes. Air RB is so stale, there's no point anymore.

Bombers are practically useless and all it is, is a 5-10min commute in a fighter to have a 3-4min battle; unless there's a high flyer or a base camper in which the match will last a lot longer and you get fighters attacking ground targets.

They have proved the concept of attrition and endurance with their Enduring Confrontation. Why not expand on that concept with multiple objectives that promotes teamwork. Bomb this strategic point to push the enemy back, support your bombers, intercept enemy fighters, etc.

An Enduring Confrontation mixed with Tank RB would be the ultimate game mode.

There's so much potential but hey... sUpERsOnIc jEtS!

Pretty soon you'll have MiG-21 v. F14 Tomcat battles...

You'll have to fix a damaged fighter (Polikarpov I-180S) using diagnostics flight to find which parts are faulty, and craft these parts in the Workshop, similarly to the IS-7 event last summer.

There are six prize vehicles available to win:
  • I-180S: Rank II Premium Aircraft (USSR)
  • Pr.122bis: Rank II Premium Vessel (USSR)
  • VFW: Rank III Premium Vehicle (Germany)
  • Ju 388 J: Rank IV Premium Aircraft (Germany)
  • HMS Tiger: Rank IV Event Vessel (Britain)
  • Merkava Mk.1: Rank VI Event Vehicle (USA)
However, you'll have to choose which one(s) you need the most, because it's almost impossible to win them all if you have a life...
(or, you can simply buy them on the Marketplace.)

I started researching the Mitsubishi T-2. Those who play it say it's incredibly fun.

I need to branch out more in WT, but I've logged some time with it in Aero Elite. Great fun, fast, and looks damn good in Blue Impulse livery.

Later Edit:
🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬! Every flight I've had in this game for the last month almost without fail has ended in either mutual destruction of aircraft or, what seems to be 90% of the time, I take a burst or two and my pilot is killed instantly. I've had ones where I get it, but to be flying along with no one within 3km, no trails visible, and yet get insta-killed by...I don't even know anymore! It's killing my drive to play the game because I don't know what's going on or how to fix it. 🤬!

How do I get this fighter, is it skill based, and is it too late to start?

It's too late, the event has ended already. But you can still buy what you want on the Marketplace (if you play on PC).

The event wasn't skill based, more like time based. I thought I'll get a Merkava, but it would take too much of my time. I assembled only one plane and traded it for the Project 122bis (a Soviet vessel).

Yup... The event was total BS. I finished one plane but only because I had to buy some parts because I never got any of them. Only got 1 and 3 toolkits even though almost always ending out on top of a team with 3-4-5-6k score...

I play on PS4 so that won't be an option. Though if a similar event comes along, whether it's possible to trade a ground or navy vehicle for a plane on PS4 I don't know. I have the only tank I'd really want, the AC IV Thunderbolt. Otherwise I'm mostly in to aviation.

Wait, so if you're not very good at the game you'll find it very hard to build a plane?

No. The event was completely RNG. Top players were supposed to get the x10 boxes but the chances to actually receive one when placing first was about 0.001%.

Has anyone got tips for how to fly a plane like the Spitfire on realistic controls? It's so easy for it to lose control, like "use 40% of the stick and you're in trouble", or at least that's how it feels to me.
