Weather/dynamic time of day has caused jagged shadows. Should it have been left out?

Don't mean to offend anyone, but if you think they should've left it out because of some jaggy shadows, your priorities are off just a tad.:dunce:

I played the game today at a friend on his 50'' Plasma tv

From far away you don't notice the jaggies at all on a big tv like that , it looks very slick

I think some of you guys are sitting not far enough from your screens:s

again guys you havent gotten it on your screen yet but i would say at least half of the people here will be bugged by it when they see it.

after playing GRID, formular 1, Forza, Need for Speed HP, and all of those racing games which have perfect shadows and then to see GT5 (the ULTIMATE racing game) have terrible shadows, I believe it should be patched...

I just hope that PD is listening...

I played some Forza 3 today, cockpit view. It's got the same jagged shadows, but y'know what? In all the hours I played it when it was new, I didn't notice them once. The only reason I saw them today is because I remembered you guys moaning about them in GT5 so I had a look.

It just goes to show you can bitch and moan about little imperfections, or you can just play the game and wait for it to slip your mind completely.

I think everybody's noticing these little imperfections because they are just sitting in front of the computer and they don't have to focus on the race and not sliding out or crashing into a barrier at 150 mph.

When they get the game and race, these things will mainly go unnoticed. At least they will for me. But for some, it will still be a BIG issue.:indiff:

I think your noticing the imperfections on the original video because 1) that TV looks like a standard definition craptastic tube tele, B) your watching a poorly recorded video on Youtube... and III) the combination of 1 and B makes everything look bad. Im glad they put weather and dynamic candy in..

i would say maybe you're right but keep in mind that this game has been in development for 5 years and need for speed hot pursuit has been in development for two and just look at how crisp the shadows are and the sheer quality. now, this is my ONLY major complaint about GT5 and it should be fixed regardless, especially since it is embarrassing for them that GT5 prologue didn't even have this issues. how could they take THAT big of a step backwards? and, yes, that's a pretty big step backwards in my book. :ouch:

Are you serious??? NFS has crisper quality because they don't produce the same level of detail and quality GT5 has. You could easily distinguish that the cars in need for speed are not as detailed as GT5's cars(well the premiums anyway). You could really question if GT5's cars are real life cars whereas if you looked at NFS you could easily tell that it's a video game.

Oh but it has perfect shadows!!!!! lol....... don't stress.... zork123 is not whining or complaining...... he is simply making a point... a point that about 5,000 other disgruntled GT fans have already made... sigh

Thread title is misleading, especially as the very first reply points out that Daytona doesn't have dynamic time/weather.

But when I watched that video for the first time, from Chris's thread, the poor shadows were blindingly obvious. And if you look at this one - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oimy-Qo1-h4 - you have a circular steering wheel casting a shadow that only has about 16 sides :indiff: And there's only 1 car on track so it's not like the game is compromised by having 16 cars on track in that one.

We have almost photo-realistic premium cars, yet in some situations, they have PS1-era jagged shadows. That's not right.

Maybe the complainers should wait for the 'official tree and shadow simulator' to come out

Haha. It's like when people complain about 2D trees every time a racing sim comes out. If you've got so much time to look at the trees then you're not doing it right. Well played sir

The shadows aren't the greatest, that is true.

But seriously if you're someone who has that much of a problem with this, even if the shadows did happen to look exactly how you want them, you'd find something else to not like.

It's a shame that every form of entertainment is absolutely ripped to shreds on the Internet; I'm not saying that criticism to an extent isn't valid, but there are surely countless things that have been nit-picked online that people NEVER would have even noticed, let alone cared about it in the past. And that's not some "Ignorance is bliss" type thing, it's just that Internet tends to breed this mentality of "Let's pick this thing apart."

I agree.

Also thats just too bad for anyone who has a problem with it. They have to live with it or move on. I will be enjoying GT5 and its "jaggies". I love the smoke effects, they look the most realistic I've seen since NFS Shift. I will take GT5 in its current form than not at all. I'm an old school gamer I've seen much worse.

In answer to the launch patch: to me and to many, it seems obvious that there will be a release patch, as the online/museum indicate that we don't have the right version, so it brings me to believe there will be a patch (minor or major, we don't know) to add those features in and change a few things at the same time(maybe).

I remember BF:BC2 had a patch on release date. I had the game before the release and I thought that many bugs were present in single player. Well, on release date, the patch fixed most of these bugs, making the game much more enjoyable.

It could also be part of a patch down the line, as I don't think PD will stop supporting GT5 on release, as they did patch GT5:P, I don't see why they couldn't do it on GT5 :)

Remember that all this is just guess work at this point and should not be taken as a proof of anything 👍

Agreed. I am glad dynamic weather is included, i think people are nit-picking this game for no reason. For example "My cock is only 6 1/2 inches long... since its not 10 inches i would prefer if i just didn't have one."

2nded

too many 14 year old complainers.

Ugh...when did GT become a game where everything had to be real life or else it is epic fail?? We're hearing all these real life comparisons all the time. Here's a list of all the complaints I can think of that I've seen all over the web. Feel free to add more.

List:
1. "Damage isn't like that in real life!"
2. "There's more than 1,000 cars and 20 tracks in real life!"
3. "Every car is premium in real life!"
4. "There's a cockpit in every car in real life!"
5. "There's friggin' door handles as standard features on cars in real life!"
6. "You can change rims and paint "Hello Kitty" on "ALL" your cars in real life!"
7. "You can do engine swaps in real life!"
8. "There's dynamic weather and day/night on all tracks in real life!"
9. "You can't go backwards in a Go-Kart in real life!"
10. "There's no HUD in real life!"
11. "The camera is not glued to the back of the car in real life!"
12. "You don't shift gears like that in real life."
13. "You turn more than 200 degree on production cars in real life!"

And now we have,
14. "Shadows are smooth in real life!"

Mind my exaggerations, but seriously, we read these kinds of posts everyday, and it's seriously annoying.

As much as GT5 is advertised as the "Real Driving Simulator", it will always fall short of driving the car in real life. A simulator isn't used to replicate "reality" 1 to 1. It's used to replicate the basic things such as physics and visuals to give us the illusion of real life, but it cannot replicate the experience 100% accurately. If we keep expecting that GT franchise to be 100% real life, and nit pick everything in between, then forget about the game, and go on a track yourself for the actual experience. It's alright to have expectations for simulators to be similar to real life, but it's not ok to expect a simulation experience = real life experience.

The jagged shadows are not caused by varying time of day, the jaggies are caused by low resolution shadow mapping.

Low resolution shadow maps are used because of memory limitations and they can be generated faster.

So you could also blame the increase in car and circuit detail and the increase in number of cars on the track. The truth is that there's no one thing to blame.

Blame the ps3.:dunce:

Best Post Ever.👍

The internet is a place where small, untalented minds can freely pick apart the wonderful things created by people with actual skill and intelligence. I'd like to assume it's a bunch of unappreciative children, but the sheer number of self-proclaimed 'experts' out there makes that hard to believe. It reminds me of an old acquaintance who was a very average musician, he could not enjoy ANY music without trying to pick it apart, hyper-analyzing every note for the hint of a mistake. What a _ick! :ouch:

Today, not many people make things, so they have zero appreciation for the time and effort it takes to make stuff 'work'. Imagine these same minds at the dawn of the automotive era-no car would ever have been built!

When I hear complaints from someone who is actually BETTER than I am at GT, then I'll listen, OK?

I'd like to start a thread where all the whiners come on and tell us what they do for a living-I think it would be colossally revealing.

If you still think its worth starting a thread about the dissapointments of shadows and trees after reading that^^, then you cannot be persuaded.

Excellent post, sir.👍👍

I'm glad I'm not the only one here that loves to use atrocious comparisons to explain my point.
