Take a look at the Tuning thread - there's some good basic gudes to tuning there.
Also manual will make a HUGE difference. Forget auto, get into gear It's not easy at first but once you get to grips with a manual box you'll wonder what you was doing with auto for so long.

I still use a pad but I wouldn't mind a wheel if I could get the right setup. Never had much joy so far.
