www.spaceweather.com calls it an "erroneous report"....so if it was, what the heck is it? Locals got sick after smelling a strange smell, so...geez, the potential implications of this are staggering!

No, it was probably just a meteor. Made of some very foreign elements. Curious to see what it was composed of. Possibly chlorine, ammonia, methane?

I'd imagine it was something in the ground that's causing the illnesses. Probably sulphur or something that has been thrown up by the meteorite.

The BBC say that local media have reported that bones were found in the crater, possibly from animal carcasses buried at the scene before the impact. That would certainly explain the horrible smell too.
