What graphics settings will I be able to use with this laptop?

My laptop ran at 58 fps for the most part, vs my main pc that runs 69. I know my main can run higher, but the laptop was consistently just under 60 for 3 races.

It really made no difference to the gameplay IMO and you you'll be fine đź‘Ť

Awesome. Think I'll give it a try then. I figure, if I get the wheel and can't run it, I'll look into adding RAM and a Graphics to my desktop.

Now... Just to figure out whether I'll get the G27 or spend a lot more for xbox compatibility.

Do you have a cheap joystick that you can test with? You won't be going fast anywhere or around anybody with it but in test mode you can check frame rate.
I don't have an XPS 15 but my 3 yr old XPS 17 laptop (w/ an i5) can run locked at 160 FPS at most tracks with the right settings but 60-80 FPS is plenty if you can get that I assume you can.

No Roush. I sure don't.

How cheap are we talking? I'd be more than willing to pick up something for super cheap just to try it out. Even if it cost me the month membership.

I just checked amazon and the logitech extreme 3d pro is $25, a little more than I expected, but you may be able to find one used ($10-$15)... just an option if you want to spend the money.
Don't expect you're going to be going anywhere in a hurry with it though all I'm able to do is really just mess around with it (I normally use a DFGT for iracing, and my joystick for flight sim) but it's enough to get you into the sim and find a decent graphics setting, if you can run the default locked 80 (or 85?) FPS, with maybe some settings changes, then that's perfect, anything above 60 is reasonable (to me).

I've never understood while people are hesitant to try iracing because of their system not running it. It's not a 60$ game, just download it pay for one month and give it a try. If it works great, if not you won't have to wonder anymore and you'll only be out a few bucks. Other people who say they have been wondering about iracing forever but have never took the plunge also amaze me. Just pay for a month and give it a go, it's not going to break you.

His point (JHarrison24) is not related to the cost of the game itself, rather the investment of a wheel and pedals which costs a bit more than a few $$ and would be relatively useless should his computer not be up to spec..
Anyone can try iRacing for free with the Cadillac promotion.

Doesn't iracing let you use a controller now? Just try it out with a controller to see how it will run and then you'll know. I'm not really sure about the controller though, it seems like someone said you can use a controller now.

I appreciate your clarifying that Hydro. @Bevo, I'd be more than willing to simply try it, if I could.

I've seen mixed comments on controllers - Some saying you can, others saying no. In either case, I only have wireless Xbox controllers.

(Update for you guys...)

Found a way to configure a PS3 controller to work... SO... bought the month membership.
Certainly never plan to race with it, just want to see if everything runs.

RESULT:

I've been running around in test sessions and playing with graphics settings... I appears as though, depending on my setting, I'm running between 40 and 60 FPS.... Is it worth getting the game, and even attempting racing, if this is how I'll run it?

If you are only getting a max 70 fps with no other cars on the track and running on the free tracks then you will have trouble running it later on with full grids and some of the more performance hitting tracks.

Try running the game with everything turned down as low as you can and see what the max FPS you get in the MX5 on limerock.

I had the graphics slider to the far left, and was hovering around 50 FPS at Limerock. I did cave and do a rookie oval race... it seemed to run okay.

Limerock is one of the easier tracks to run. If you had all of the graphics maxed out though you should be good to go. You will probably have to tune them down some here and there depending on what track you are on.

I had them minimized.

At limerock the FPS hovered between 50-70... It has done that at ovals as well.

You're fine. I find that when the car is in the pits the rate drops to 48-50 but it jumps right back up once I exit.
Have you tried running in a practice session with other drivers? Or even a race to see how it all works around several drivers when the race starts?

I've let my excitement get the best of me and have actually entered in three Street Stock races. Probably not the smartest move with this controller... THough, I've managed 5th, 9th, 5th (with several A,B,C drivers in the races)

Everything runs smoothly enough. I guess I'm concerned about other tracks and larger fields.

At that little doughnut track?
I wanted to give it a shot but that's just a bit too crazy for me. I bailed after about 10 laps. Charlotte was a blast yesterday, but I couldn't imagine racing either of them with a controller. Well done đź‘Ť

i have a laptop that runs games quite well as long as i keep a fan blowing air under it. I3 2.13ghz, 512mb vram nvidia 330m, 4gb ram. Windows 7 64bit and a g27. If it runs around 50fps id be more than happy at lowest settings. Anyone have any experience with a similar setup
