I also learnt this lesson on Interlagos this weekend...had you served the 3 seconds before that corner you wouldn't have been there. The rest is just punishment for not serving the time.

"the last corner of lap 2, I cut the corner of the curbstones as always, but this time (with another car just behind me) I cut slightly too much and get a time penalty - 5.7 seconds . I carry on thinking about how to maintain my position and clear the penalty and then I cross the start line and it's 6.7 seconds, I reach T1 and it's 7.7 seconds! So, distracted by the timer and thinking where to park to serve the time penalty, I just miss my braking point and hit a car who was already passing through the turn (luckily it was only a small bump and he continued ok) but my time penalty is now 17.7 seconds . So I stop and serve the penalty, in which time I drop to last. So, from dreams of a 6th place finish to last within half a lap ."
