What was the first game that got you into racing games?

EA Sports F1 2001 for the PC. Before that the only games I really played were Pokémon.

Also, GT PSP was a big one too, believe it or not. I was kind of a late adopter of Gran Turismo.

The first Gran Turismo, Colin McRae Rally and NFS3HP were my first racing games. Good times :D
Yep-I think I may have actually played NFS3 before GT1....but once I discovered GT it was like a whole new world opened up

The first Gran Turismo is the first one that got me to take driving games seriously, but I did play quite a few before that. I was big into Stunts and the original Need for Speed because they were the first games to include the Acura NSX (my dream car) as an option. The arcade game Hard Drivin' actually helped me learn manual transmission (came out when I was learning to drive for real...and I had no choice but to learn on stick), but I probably wasted more quarters over the years on Hot Rod, Championship Sprint, Super Sprint, and Pole Position.

Crash Team Racing got me into racing games followed by Gran Turismo 2.
Gran Turismo 6 got me into Sim-racing.

I would say Gran Turismo got me into racing games. But well before that, I logged loads of laps playing "R.C. Pro-Am" on the NES. The action is fun... until that doggone yellow car gets an epic turbo boost and wins every single race in the later stages. Then before Gran Turismo, it was "The Need for Speed SE" that helped me not only get educated about cars, but also helped me to appreciate the fine work Road and Track Magazine does. My love of racing games just had those two stages. And obviously, Gran Turismo only enhanced my education on both racing and cars.

Super Monaco GP for the Sega Genesis. It is still a blast today, too.
I forgot about that game! That was a blast. I think they had sparks coming out of the back of cars, which I remember thinking was awesome. I didn't expect so many responses-keep em coming!

From before I was tall enough to play a stand-up cabinet without parental assistance:

The first game to teach me some useful driving and racing technique, with its drift physics, throttle control, and hairpins and technical corners. Most other 2D parallax/scrolling based racing games never hooked me as much as this:

Then the first game that got me to start paying attention to real cars, spurred the purchase of my first wheel peripheral, and led me to get interested in simulators:

The first racing game I played was Bill Elliott's NASCAR Challenge om the NES, I also played a lot of Days of Thunder and Michael Andretti's World GP. E

For me it was Micro Machines 2 on the Mega Drive II, but other big influences include Total Drivin' (my first 3D racing game) on PSX, Wipeout 2097 and Gran Turismo. I was a bit too young to really understand GT, though, so I didn't get far in it, but with every subsequent release I learned more and more so while I don't think I've ever 100% finished any GT, I feel like I grew up with it.

Toca Touring Cars on the ps1. This game was so awesome! It hada BTTC licence, cockpit view, thunderstorms, Tiff Needell as anouncer. It got me hooked on getting the perfect laps.

Think it was games like,

chase hq on the commodore 64
and then games like lotus turbo challenge on the amiga, kept me going for years these games.
Before the absolutely amazing sega rally on the saturn,
Then i kept seeing in magazines a game called gran turismo was coming..wow..

My first car game was a demo of an old rally game when I was a kid. I forgot what it was called and vaguely remember any of it. Other than that, GT3 got me really hooked on racing. I was just watching my dad play it and wanted to have a turn, and that's how it all began :)

I played a bit of the GT demo disc (remember those?) that my cousins had and the occasional arcade machine like Cruisin' USA, Outrun, and the like. It wasn't until I got a 64 that I had access to games like Cruisin' World, Topgear Overdrive, and Beetle Adventure Racing (my sister's idea). While they were arcade racers they taught me the fundamentals like hand-eye coordination, feeling the car, and throttle/brake modulation that I would later refine in sim games. Those were good times. :D
