The #70 RX-8 finished the 24 Hours of Daytona looking like this...

I snapped this photo at Limerock Park over Memorial Day...
(he was towing his bumper for a good 5-10 laps)

Here's another car who was a bit aggressive with his passing...

Auto makers will never allow damage like that in their license I don't think.

I wish they would cus that would be AWESOME!

If you want a great damage model then for £10 get race driver grid or download the demo for free. I struggled to find images on the net that do it justice. It can be abit glitch in places (wheel going through hood skin for example). However it is by far the best damage model.

Or have a look at burnout paradise, once again this pic doesn't do their damage model justice.

I want to be able to do this..

Haha yeah!!

I know that we at least can do damage To our cars... But honestly, when your car only gets a scratch from running into a concrete pillar with 450km/h... Thats not really in the spirit of a game, which claims to be the Real driving simulator..

There are a few games which are better in terms of the damage you can do than GT5, and I do doubt GT will ever get there. It's just not a priority. It's a driving simulator, after all, not a damage simulator (nor is it really a racing game, for that matter). So, as suggested here, if anyone wants to do damage to his/her car, or the cars of opponents and/or wants to see the cars smashed up, pick a different game. My personal favorite is Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit. Particularly Hot Pursuit and Interceptor events in the Cop Career, where your only aim is to wreck the cars of the street racers. Sometimes, that's all I want to do, as opposed to be driving around race tracks in GT5.

I would gladly remove some of the repetitive trees and bystanders from the sidelines if it meant freeing up cpu/gpu cycles for rendering proper damage. At the very least, parts should fall off. At times I can see the premium cars render bumpers as separate pieces...but they never come off.

The damage I displayed above to the BMW and Subaru was from minor contact during hard racing. The type of contact we encounter all the time. They didn't hit a pole or slam into a guard rail. They simply had minor run-ins with other cars while traveling 120 mph.

I too would prefer a better damage model, even to the degree that if you run your car into a wall at full speed, your car is totaled, and the race should end without placing.

What's the damage like on NFS Shift 2? I haven't had a good look yet, but I thought it was quite good in the original (one of the only parts that was any good).

Damage in the original was good...but I only played it on PC.

I don't think the PS3 is the issue. The premium cars are very high detail. I'd rather see standard cars with good damage than premium cars with no damage.

i don't want to hijack your thread but...

...PLEASE tell me you were at Limerock on Monday and got to see this in person....

PS4.

PS3 is already struggling with GT5.

It has nothing to do with the system. It's the car manufacturers themselves. Audi, Honda, Volvo, etc. They don't want a game which will portrays their cars being excessively damaged because (ha ha) they think it'll hurt their real-life safety images. Yea, like cars never get damaged in real-life collisions.

Granted, I'm sure some manufacturers could care less how their cars get portrayed in a videogame, but PD has to kowtow to the ones who do care.

you don't really still believe that do you?...that excuse is so 2000

Gran Turismo 5 already employs three different levels of damage...there is no reason that at least Race cars couldn't get that treatment...

the real reasons are...

1. GT5 is already pushing the PS3 to its limits because Polyphony Digital has fallen off in regards to being a top dog developer and the game is not exactly the most efficient software
2. it was PD's first REAL attempt at damage

That's true, the manufacters certainly have influence in this matter.

I dont think its car makers. There are plenty of games out there crashing hondas, audis and volvos.

Yeah, it's just a silly excuse. And even then, cars that have the best damage modelling in the game and are obviously under no "licensing issues" (rally cars), plain suck. Collision and damage model seem to be rushed into the game in the later stages of development of the game itself, and was added just because public pressure and demand, not because the game director, Mr Yamauchi, wanted to.
