Which book are you currently reading?

I got a book for my kindle called "25 Things You Need to Know About the Future". Its a good read talking about the problems of humanity (peak oil, peak water) and possible solutions. It does get a bit crazy when the author says its possible to grow bio plastic bottles on tress already full of fizzy drinks!!!

Another one:

Arrrghhhh...I've run out of books! Quick, Batman, to the library!

Any suggestions? Remember I can't buy normal books here in English. My choices are limited to popular novels which a friend or family member might have.

My choice now is between Game of Thrones (haven't seen the show), Mongrel (a Khans life story) or Noble House. Recommendations?

Following on with the works of Azimov I've raided my dad's library for the Foundation Series. Started reading the foreword and intro to Foundations and Empire last night.

Hard-core Sci-Fi. My favourite!

I'm pretty sure you won't be able to find it over there, but if you haven't read it, I can't recommend this enough:

Not just my favourite sci-fi novel, but right up there with Gatsby and Jest as my favourite novels, full stop. Hunt this down, I promise you won't be disappointed 👍

Arrrgghhh!!! Cannot see picture! (Stupid ISP in China)

What was it? I'll be back in the UK in 2 weeks so could get it there or failing that raid my dad's library which is surprisingly well stocked.

Slip's right, We is a pretty good read. It was required reading for a course I took a few years ago (Sci-fi: East vs. West) and it was one of the more interesting ones. I read it again earlier this year, and it was so much better than I remembered it being.
I'll recommend The Futurological Congress by Stanislav Lem, it was my favorite from that class. Unfortunately, it's short, and it seems even shorter because once you start reading, it's hard to stop. At least it was for me.

Noble House is a great read, and it'll take you a while to get through it so it'll be that much longer before you need another book.

Just finished reading this:

Really interesting book that gives a little insight into America's thoughts at the start of the NAZI party taking control. It is the latest book by Erik Larson author of The Devil in the White City, one of my favorite books.

Now I'm reading

Really good so far. I haven't seen the series yet but will definitely be checking it out. HBO makes some amazing shows, Soprano's and Deadwood being two of my favorites. Some idiot posted a meme picture without any spoiler warning in the funny pics thread that may have totally ruined it for me but I'm still trying to enjoy it.:yuck:

Yevgeny Zamyatin's We 👍

I've been told of thos book having become a follower of Newspeak, that this book is similar to the thing of the thing of 1984. Do intend to read it when I get bak otLondon.

Actually, you can go to the major library or the major bookstores in the major cities (wow, lots of major's there) in China and find some English language books.

When I was working in Shanghai, a Dutch girl showed me the bookstore in Shanghai that they had, massive place with tons of books, Chinese and English. Was unable to find one that I could pick up and read because I wanted to save the money for other things (Drinks and travelling) and also, I am exceedingly picky about books at my age. Strangely.

However, I eventually went to another bookstore (I forgot where the first big bookstore was) and just browsed around. You do get quite popular books stuff and also more self-help stuff, but there were some good ones there. I ended up picking something about English language (not surprising, however it had some starkly incorrect information in it that made me extremely mad, coming from an American author! note: not American grammar) and some stockbroker stuff.

Was a good thing to pass the time really, but nothing engrossing.

The stockbroker thing (Nicholas Taleb) was a total massive e-peen stuff. Jesus, the whole book was basically about him saying: "I can sell anything and people will lap it up because its all random!". Rubbed me up the wrong way, that did.

The book stores here have English books but they are all books that I've read. The classics mainly; Gulliver's travels, all the Shakespeares', Tolstoy, Dstoyesvski...

(names probably spelt wrong dur to mucho boozo)

They don't have Stephen Kings books? They must have the Dark Towers series there somehow, considering its a well known series.

Yes, it isn't really the best of reading, but at least it still passes the time.

Hm.

Oh yeah, its your weekend off tonight.

How about just making a list that you would like to read and GTPlanet readers just sending them to you? You could pay the cost for them that way?

I've read most King novels but asking for books from GTP and paying the shipping might not be a bad idea. It's got to be better than waiting a year for somebody ot come and visit!

I'm sure most people here would be quite happy to do that. :).

Plus, its nice to help out a fellow forum user and hear of good deeds too.

Doesn't Thailand have lots of English bookshops?

Shem, you make me appreciate Kindle and iBooks in ways I never thought I would.

I actually have a couple of books I'll have to finish up, but right now I'm on "The House of Tomorrow" by Peter Bognanni for summer reading. I'm over halfway of the book & so far it's pretty good. A bit of profanity as well, so you can tell that it's a teen novel.

I'm currently reading Brazen Chariots, by Maj. Robert Crisp. It's been an engrossing read, a part of the excellent Bantam War Books Series of novels.

Currently Revelation by C.J.Samson or at least I think that's his name.

Good story about a murder mystery in the 15th century in London. It's one of a series but the first one I've read.

Not 1 story, but rather many short stories, I just finished "Battleground" And the next short story is "Trucks", The one that my favorite film "Maximum Overdrive" is based off of.

Currently I'm reading "Angel of Death" by Jack Higgins, and next I've got "How I won the yellow jumper" by Ned Boulting.

Shem, you make me appreciate Kindle and iBooks in ways I never thought I would.

I'm surrounded by real books, thousands upon thousands of them ( I rarely quote Wikis) literally walls of them. I love real books, the feel, the heft, the smell of them, the texture of fine pages, or even the lusty grubbiness of a pulp-fiction paperback's greasy pages. I have books scattered in my car, my office, my washroom, everywhere there seems to be a surface available to stop gravity grabbing them to earth.

But Kindle! When you think about it - it's an invaluable tool. I now have a new toy to work for.

Where the conflict really lies by Alvin Plantinga

So many books, TankAss, so many books . . . so little time.

Tonight, I hope to get into Eric Nylund's 'The Fall of Reach'. Should be a quick couple of hours.
Unless the Planet lures me in . . . you know which planet. ;)
