Max Mosley will be stepping down in October, who else here is suprised?

Max Mosley is to step down as FIA president in October.

An FIA statement said that Mosley had informed the general assembly of F1's governing body of his decision at a meeting in Paris.

Mosley's current term as president was not due to end until 2005 but he has decided to bow out a year early.

The announcement comes as a huge surprise as Mosley had previously indicated that he wished to stay on in the role.

Only last month, he had suggested that a new vice-president be appointed who he could groom to be his successor. It was believed that Ferrari boss Jean Todt was his top choice for the post.

Mosley has been more active than ever in recent months, controversially championing plans to slow F1 cars down and reduce costs.

It remains to be seen what effect his decision to step down will have on these proposals.

Mosley, 64, had held motorsport's top job since replacing Jean-Marie Balestre as FISA president in 1991.

He oversaw FISA's merger with the FIA two years later and became president of the latter in October 1993.

It's been on the cards for a while. Before his promotion to head of Ferrari it was rumoured Jean Todt would be filling the role.

Who'll fill the role... I honestly have no clue who else would be in line, who's the FIA top brass atm? Browsing their site it's not overtly apparent just who the council is.

With the rule changes, new formats suggested, and Bernie rumoured to be pulling back, if only a fraction, F1 could be in for quite a change.

Edit:

According to http://www.fia.com/thefia/statutes/Files/article14_wmsc.html there are 26 members of the FIA World Motor Sport Council, and their Deputy President would logically be next in line to replace Max Mosley. Who those people are I haven't yet found.

The word also was that he was still looking forward to going on to next year and reading the latest F1 racing magazine it said, from Max himself, that he would be running for President again

ME! I've been looking forward to his resignation for some time now.

How about a former F1 driver - they know the sport better than most - they can see rule changes from the drivers point of view, they know how to deal with team principles, and know the sorts of pressures that sponsors can apply.

Prost?

Mansell?

Brundell?

Sterling Moss?

Paul Stoddart??

Although i do believe Jean Todt is the best man for the job. His recent comments about not wanting the position are text-book smoke screen.

Don't remember him driving.

Jean Todt would be good, but as he's just been promoted to being head of Ferrari (F1 and Road cars) that would be unlikely. David Richards would do a good job. Or even Tom Walkinshaw. Someone that has a long history of Motorsport. 👍

Someone who has been forced into motorsport by his employers like Flavio Briatore and his ilk 👎

I think it should be someone with sufficient experience in both motorsport in general and management thereof. A team owner is thus the most logical choice. However, there are 25 other members of the current council that I don't know, so I'm thinking one of them is most likely.
