Why won't they leave Star Wars alone?

Apparently Lucas is going to squeeze even more money out of Star Wars and retrofit it with 3D therefore adding nothing to the experience and reducing the screen brightness in the process. Well done beardy!

'Star Wars' saga set for 3D release starting 2012

Sources indicate that George Lucas is set on rereleasing the "Star Wars" franchise in new 3D conversions beginning in 2012. Although 3D versions have been rumored for some time, Lucas purportedly was waiting until there were enough screens available to make the release a sizable event.

Fox, which released all six original "Star Wars" films, also would release the 3D versions.

Episode I, "The Phantom Menace," would be first out of star-dock during early 2012. After that, each film would be released in order at the same time in consecutive years, depending on how well the first rerelease does.

Each conversion takes at least a year to complete, with Lucas overseeing the process to make sure each is as perfect as possible. He has said that the "Avatar" experience convinced him that "Star Wars" is ready for the state-of-the-art 3D treatment.

Starting with "Phantom Menace," Lucasfilm would use several higher-end conversion houses to work on the project. By late winter or early spring in 2012, the exhibition industry should have all the 3D screens anyone could want for such a release.

At present, pics are limited to 2,000-2,500 3D locations owing to an insufficient installed base of projectors and screens. Movie theaters are adding 3D screens at a clip of 500 a month in the U.S. Foreign exhibitors also are pushing into 3D as quickly as possible now that financing for the installations is flowing.

Also pushing the timetable is a potential breakthrough in 3D TV technology. With Samsung penetrating the market with 50,000-plus 3D-equipped sets and Sony recently sending its version to market, the home-viewing experience could be primed for 3D DVD versions of the films by the time the new 3D theatrical releases have run their course.

Lucas purportedly is lining up the theatrical rereleases as a lead-in to the ultimate home-viewing experience. Beyond that, the property would launch to other 3D media.

In the meantime, Lucas plans a comprehensive Blu-ray Disc set of the six films next year, which would include upgraded picture and sound quality, new deleted scenes and special features.

Guess we'll only have to suffer through TPM, then.

Is it actually possible to 3D a originally 2D film without it looking like a pop-up book (ie obvious layers) ?

I've only seen Avatar in 3D, which was done well, but the cinema showed 2 or 3 trailers for other 3D films which all looked poor in 3D.

The short answer is no. Alice in Wonderland and the new Harry Potter films are both retrofit 3D so it's quite common but that doesn't make it any less rubbish.

Now if they were showing all the Star Wars films on IMAX then I'd happily pay to see them again as long as they were the original releases and not the molested ones...I'd even see TPM!

 That was one of the first things on my mind when I saw they were starting with Episode I. Oh joy, one of the worse movies goes first. Personally, I'd skip Ep.I and Ep.II (the worst Star Wars movie... ever... and I've watched both Ewoks movies...) completely and go straight to Ep.III.

Lots could go wrong. Movies remastered in 3D (like Alice) don't look that great. Lucas should instead simply concentrate on making Episodes VII to IX.

Alright! We have the oppotunity, no, the privilage of seeing Jar Jar Binks' beautiful Gungan face in stunning 3D!!

We can only hope that the sound of people vomiting courtesy the 3D afterthought can cover over his atrocious dialog and Anakin's incessant whining...

Or, get the live-action television show back on track...

I'm a sucker for Star Wars stuff, so I'll buy in. I'd probably do the same and just skip it until Episode III, but who knows, it's hard to say. Based on what the TRS guys talked about when they got to see a preview of Episode IV converted into IMAX 3D, it should be sweet.

"Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!"

If George Lucas wants these episodes to do well at all, he'll personally stay away from any creative part of them from concept to delivery.

I don't want my Solid Snake-style Noghri to end up like cute Ewoks with knives. I don't even wanna know what his vision of a Hapan Battle Dragon would look like, and Mara Jade would probably be portrayed by Megan Fox in terrible acting glory. Grand Admiral Thrawn would be uber lame and not at all like the cunning, artistic, intellectual, and almost likable Thrawn we all know from the Timothy Zahn Trilogy. Speaking of which, I think that trilogy needs to be covered in at least two films, possibly three, with The "Courtship of Princess Leia" preceding it. It's that good.

Then, if these episodes succeed, Thrawn will be known by the entire world and not just the geeks, and will want more. In which case, more money can be made by producing a television series with him as the protagonist when he explored the Unknown Regions. Even the racist Palpatine realized how awesome he was.

Then we'll need another episode each for both Dark Empire with the Eclipse and World Devastators, and that one with Admiral Daala and the Sun Crusher I forget the name of. Anyways, the Sun Crusher is awesome.

Pardon my geeky ramblings.

I can't believe they are starting with Episode 1, one of the most hated of the lot! But it will pull the mega bucks as a whole new generation of kids goes to see it. The Podrace will probably be the only thing good in it.

I'm no fan of 3D and probably wont been seeing them till Episode 3 or 4. I'm sure most want to see the original trilogy first but its probably harder for Lucas to do whereas the newer films are all GCI anyway so just boot up the PC and add a second camera angle!

I wish they would do a Clone Wars live action movie, or give us Episode 7 with all new characters.

Robin.

Which almost guarantees it will be so...

"I was the Emperor's Hand!"

:scared:

Yeah, I don't think she could pull it off, along with the revenge fantasies of killing Skywalker and stuff. That sounds like it could be pretty comical actually,

Aside from the Clone War Cartoon and Games.

Strange that a kid's cartoon and a videogame (TFU) are arguably better than any of the three prequels. It saddens me to know that, as I recall, there is only one more season of Clone Wars after this. Worse, that TFU:II will probably be the last in that franchise as well.

I wonder if they will make one more movie from TFU series.

Odd, huh? I was skeptical at first, but the Clone Wars writing and directing has turned out much better than any of the trilogy prequels!

Not to mention the fact that CGI Anakin's acting is better than Hayden Christiansen's...

If they do a worthwhile job and don't mess it up, I think seeing all the Star Wars movies in 3D would be brilliant. But i'm unsure whether they can do it or not.

At this rate, Lucas will be out of phase and gone forever by 2014. :dopey:

I find that with 3D, it hardly loks 3D at all, There is a little bit of unconvincing layering on the screen, but then when you take the glasses off, it looks perfectly normal.
