Full analysis of the caught athletes in the retesting today:
- In 2015, the statute of limitations for testing of banned substances by IOC was expanded from eight to ten years. This meant that the Beijing samples were legal to retest until 2018.
- This wouldn't have been the first time that the Beijing samples were retested. After those games, the IOC retested approximately 1,000 samples for the blood boosting drug CERA. Of those retested, only five were caught, including 1,500-meter gold medalist Rashid Ramzi of Bahrain.
- Nearly 500 samples from the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin have already been retested. the IOC has remained mum on if those retests have produced any new positive cases.
- Five Athletes were caught in retests of the samples of the 2004 Athens games, including men's shot put winner Yuriy Bilonog of Ukraine.
- The IOC is retesting 250 samples from the London games. Like @Dennisch has said, these retests are aimed at those athletes who are planning on competing at Rio. If any are caught under the new tests, the IOC will ban them from competing in the games.
