I'm not sure but they were begging for donations a few weeks ago. They gotta keep the site running somehow.

I'm sure I read that they were not going to use advertising to keep the site open only a few months back, on the site itself!

They weren't Chinese ads and some pages were without them. How odd.

I looked at the English Wikipedia and the Chinese Wikipedia. No ads. I'm thinking you got a virus that's displaying the ads because Wikipedia never has had ads.

Happened to me yesterday.

This is really strange now.

I'm thinking it may be something on my computer because my in-boxes have ads where they didn't before.

I should also note that I've only had this happen while using Chrome. Firefox is adfree as usual.

Okay I fixed the issue by removing Vid-Saver from the programs/appdata.
